Sir * W'ilfrecl Laurier recently passel, his Rall birthday, and is ap- parently in good health ane, able for the arduous work of a long session, l* --An organization to fight political corruption has been fortned in Mon- treal, It consists: of young inen of both political parties, and they will work to sec that elections are carried out honestly, It is to be known as the Volunteer Electoral League. .. —Hon, A. T. Matheson, the Provin- cial Trensurer, has received a sybscrip• tion for $350,000 worth of tit'© bonds issued for the benefit of the Tena]s- karning and, Northern Ontario Rail- way. Of this $3,000,000 loan all but $171,000 bas been taken up, The se- curities were first placed on the mar- ket on July 1st, and Hon. Mr, Mathe- son expects to have the loan complete- ly subscribed by the end of the month. * —Santos Dumont, the most distin- guished aeronaut the century has pro- duced, declares that the problem of maintaining a body heavier than the air suspended to air has been solved, and that in ten years men will pass through the air as naturally as they now pass over surface highways, Tra- velling in the air, he declares, will be lunch cheaper than automobiling, and any man will be able to keep his fly- ing machine in an upper room, and start from iris balcony. It is merely a matter now of perfecting mechanical details. *V♦ —A gain of $6,000,826 is shown in Canada's exports of do:nestle products for four months, ending October 31st, as compared with the sane period in 1905. The total for the last four months was $88,818,114. On forest products there was an increase of 84,- 947,588, on animals and their produce, an increase of $3,526,527. and on manufactures, $482,619. A decrease of $694,563 is shown on mineral pro- ducts, of $1,558,058 on fisheries, and $676,568 in agricultural products, as distinguished from animals and their produce. ** —The third session of the tenth Parliament of the Dominion of Ca- nada was opened last Thursday by Lord Grey, There were only three instances before, of Parliament meet- ing in the fall of the year. The first was in Confederation year, the second in 1873, and the third in 1880. The speech from the throne had reference to the request for increased subsidies from the various provinces, which will be settled this session, and the treaty with Japan. Bills will be sub- mitted amending the Election Acts, the Postoffice Act, the Dominion Lands Act, a bill for the more ef- fective supervision and inspection of Canadian canned food products, meats and fish ; a bill relating to the sale and manufacture of patent medicines, and also a bill to make better provision for dealing with juvenile delin- quents. .*„ —The Simcoe Reformer argues as follows :—"A riding that had but one hundred venal voters out of a total enfranchisement of four thousand would be remarkably clean riding. There isn't a riding so free from cor- rupt elements in the Province of On. tario. No, not one, We do not wish to be understood to say there is not a riding in Ontarro that is not innocent of corruption. Rut, it was lack of op- portunity that keptthese ridings in- nocent. Hopelessly one-sided, no one would give a, dollar for a dozen votes. But bring the two sides nearly to an equality in numbers ; find a few rich candidates; call on a bye -election, with the fate of a Government tremb- ling in the balance; and if the gentle- men with thesatchels cannot do busi- ness with from athird to a half of the voters in an ordinary Ontario con- stituency, then we never saw the in- side of a canvasser's tally book," If the above from the Reformer is true, so much the worse for our country, —Canada is developing, and Ontario is showing in that development, if not showing the greats"t progress. The wealth of Cobalt is being more and more unfolded. Last week two im- portant events occurred in Toronto. The first train on a direct line con- necting Toronto and Perry Sound started from the Union Station, To- ronto, on Monday. On the evening of the same day electrical energy from Niagara was for the first time deliver- ed in Toronto, and now comes an nt- terauce of Hon. Mr. Lemieux, Post- master -General, who publicly stated in Montreal last week that the build- ing of a ship canal from Georglan Bay to Montreal, by way of the French and Ottawa Rivers, le a thing of the near future. The survey has been completed and it is estimated that the canal, with It depth of twenty-two feet, can be built at a cost of $125,000,- 000. Stich a waterway would save seventy-two hours in time between the Great Lakes and Montreal, and 500 miles in distance. With it, ships earrying M0,000 bushels of wheat could Ioed at Port Arthnr dtreet for Liverpool. * —The Weekly Sun thus refers to the visit of the ex.deputy Finance Minister to Toronto. "Mr. Coair'tney, wbo bas Retroed under every Finance Minister save one since Confedet'atfon, took oecaasion, in the course of an ad- dress before the Canadian Club of this city, to utter a note of warning which should he heeded by alt thoughtful Canau, triris. Mr. Courtney, although tau longer a public official, still has the cautious manner of one long trained in the public service. Iiia warning of the danger incurred by the scale of expenditure prevailing at Ottawa was, therefore, exceedingly moderate in tone, bat because of that moderation was all the more impressive. The fact that the speaker was abundantly just', iced is his warning can be easily es• tablished by the public accounts, These show that the total expendi- tures of the Dominion Government ran about tiairty.two millions thirty years ago; that they increased to an average of some forty-three millions twenty years since; then continued nearly stationary until 1800, but since then have gone up 1»' leaps and bounds, until, for the year ending June last, they reached the alarming total of over eighty-three million dol- lars. The country is progressing, cer- tainly, but even the rate of progress attained does not justify a practical doubling of our outgo in ten years." r mews 'litems --The Georgian Bay Milling and Power Company have at a cost of $60,- 000 completed a fine electric power and light plant two miles out of Men - ford. —A million bushels of grain were waiting shipment in Owen Sound ele- vator recently and another vessel at the dock with thousands more, and not room enough in the elevator for her cargo, —Peter 11. McKenzie, M. P., at the solicitation of nearly all the patrons of the Teeswater postoffice, has de- cided that it is not advisable or in the interest of the service to make any change at present in the postmastei- ship at Teeswater. —At the Fall Assizes in Orangeville a jury awarded Alexander McDougall $2,500 damages and costs in an action against Alexander McArthur for alienating the affections of the plain- tiff's wife. McDougall is a captain sailing on the Canadian lakes and re- sides in Paisley. —Some of the railroad companies have adopted a new style of fence post that should be very durable. It is made of common galvanized pipe and cement. A piece of pipe about six feet long is imbedded in a stnall hole filled with green cement. This soon hardens, leaving a post that may be dug up and reset if wanted, —Opinion in favor of local option appears to be very strong in Bruce Co. Of the 103 municipalities in the pro- vince that are to vote on prohibition bylaws in January, 7 are in Bruce Co, while Southampton already has the law in operation. Townships that will vote on the law are : Arran, Bruce, Eastnar, Kincardine; and vil- lages : Port Elgin, Teeswater and Tiverton. —The Canadian Northern Railway Co. are applying for charters for nine railways in Ontario. This Company have a road built from Toronto to Sudbury—the James Bay railway— and one of the charters for which ap- plication will be made at this session of parliament will he for a branch from Washago, a point on the Tames Bay Railway in Muskoka, to near Kincardine. Paisley, Nov. 20.—What may yet prove a very valuable mineral find is reported from Greenock Township in Bruce county, near the village of Car- gill. Extensive deposits of a peculiar black and containing a high percent- age of platinum flake gold and other mineral substances, has been found in proximity to a small lake, which al- so contains considerable marl such as used in the manufacture of cement. A gentleman possessing considerable knowledge of minerals visited the place, and by the use of a common magnet and microscope established beyond doubt the presence of the minerals spoken of. How to collect the value from the vast deposit and bring it to a commercial possibility is the question now.
