The males exceed the females by 100,000. —Last month 7,350 passengers left the Clyde for places out of Europe, of which rinnrber 4,282 were bound for the United States and 3,077 for Can- ada. —W. R. McGregor of Blenheim re- ports a record yield of oats and bar- ley, sown mixed, but principally bar- ley. Ile had 28 teres of crop, and when threshed it produced 1,850 bush- els, an average of about 05 bushels to the acre. —A report on the world's wheat crop issued August 31st by the Huns garian Minister of Agriculture made the total crop 3,526,000,000 bushels, compared to 3,183,210,000 bushels last year, or an increase of 313,000,000 bushels, —A movement is afoot at Port Ar- thur, Ont., to establish an oatmeal mill there with a capacity of 75 to 100 barrels a, day. Mr. Wedell, who for 10 orr 12 years •h � e ,s has been in the oatmeal milling at Elora, Ont., is behind the scheme. Ottawa, Sept. 20th,—The Railway Commission has approved of the plans fora tunnel by the Detroit River Channel Company. The tunnel cinder the Detroit river will cost from $7,- 1 000,000 to $10,000,000. There will be • two tubes laid on cement 65 feet be- low the bed of the river. The tunnel will be operated by electricity. —The longest fence in the world is probably that which has been erected by a well-known American cattle com- pany along the Mexican border. It is seventy-five miles in length, and sep- arates exactly for its entire distance the two Republics of North America. a The fence was built to keep the cattle from running across the border and falling an easy prey to the Mexican cow -punchers. Although it cost a great Ileal of money, it is estimated that cattle enough has been saved in one year to more than pay for it. Tara, Ont., Sept. 17.—Last week Mr. Ayearst, provincial inspector for local option municipalities, arrived in Tara and proceeded to overhaul the hotels, 1' securing liquor to the value of about $70. In the Police Court on Friday both hotelkeepc,rs pleaded guilty and were fined $50 and costs, and the liq- uor was destroyed. On Saturday the 1 hotel men fenced in their property and will not accommodate the travel- ling public in any way. The temper- ance people are holding a meeting to- night to arrange for taking care of travellers until such time as hotel - keepers are ready to open their houses. Why not follow the example of Thatnesforcl under similar circum- stances. Thamesford has two tem- perance hotels and both are said to be of the best variety. The editor of the Thamesford Star says—"We had occa- sion to secure accommodation at one of then and we have no hesitation in stating that the accommodation is even superior to that obtained under the best licensed management. Mr. P. 0, Ternplin, harnessrnakor, has found it necessary to snake an as- signtnent for the benefit of his credi- tors. 1'1r, Templin was exceptionally steady and a hoard worker and his as- signment has come as a great surprise to those who knew him. The noted evangelists, Messrs. Crossley and Hunter, aro 10 hold a series of revival meetings in Tees - water, The meeting will commence on Sunday, the 30th inst., and will be conducted under the union auspices of the Methodist and Presbyterian congregations. The meetings will be held in Knox church. From the Maple Creek (Alberta) Signalnal of Sept. 0th wetserthat John McRae, second son of Alex, McRae, one time a resident on the 3rd con. of Culross, has rnet an untimely death by lightning, ou the western prairies. McRae with two comrades, Sam Cros- son and Chas, McFarlane, was looking after ranch cattle at a point ninety miles north of Swift Current in Wes- tern Saskatchewan, when all three met death together. The entire party (and even their dog) having been killed there was none to report the tragedy to their friends, so that their fate re- mained unknown for nearly two weeks. Cantelon shipped 3,500 bas - bets of crab apples to Winnipeg. This represents two carloads. The action of the Collegiate Board in re -organizing its staff has been variously discussed about town. The New Era has reason to believe that the Grand Trunk authorities aro willing to build a new station here, if the authorities of the town approach them in a right spirit. The city council of Toronto has been so impressed by the excellence of Miss Clara Mountcastle's art collec- tion that it has decided to purchase a selection to the value of $300. An inmate of the London asylum escaped from that institution last week and made her way as far as Clinton en route for her former home at Ripley. She sought shelter with one of our worthy residents who noti- fied the asylum authorities, and on Thursday, Miss McEvoy, one of the nurses, came up and took her back to the city. The dense smoke floating around is said to be caused by fire in the Hay swamp. In that township there is a large swamp several hundred acres in extent, and it is said to be nearly all on fire. Culverts and bridges that pass through it have been destroyed, and all efforts to check it have so far been unsuccessful ; neighboring farms are in great danger. In view of the success which has followed the organization of the Cana- dian postmasters into a society for mutual benefit, it has been decided to form an association of the postmasters of this county, and a circular has been issued calling a convention of the postmasters of the county of Huron, to be held in the Council Chamber, Town Hall, Clinton, on Tuesday, the 0th of October, at 1.30 p. n., to con- sider the question of the formation of a County Association, and other ques- tions which may arise, and for mutual benefit and consultation.
