G. \V, Ross no sooner lane pounces the "dawning of a brighter day for Ontario Liberalism," and that he is bard at work perfecting his plans for victory, than Ontario Liberals, alarmed 1,'ar, ttl at the threatened stay in the saddle of the old afar horse, rise in revolt and the papers are busy seeding hip to the Hecate and selecting his sne-'essna° in Ontario polities. * --One day last week the Globe carne out, in big type, announcing a great scandal against the Ontario Govern- ment in connection with the Teniiska- niing Railway paining matters. The facts are these—The commission ad- vertised that mining rights were for sale on the Railway aught of way, on the following terms :— A bonus of e5n,000, a royalty of ten per cent. on ore worth up to $400 a ton, 25 per cent, on ore assaying from $400 to $1,- 000 a ton, and 50 per cent. on all more valuable ore. No applications were received, the general impression being that the conditions were so stringent. After the advertised sale had failed, a company, of which Mr, itiurphy, jr., was a prominent member, offered the bonus of $50,000 and a flat royalty of 25 per cent. This was thought to be a good offer, and the Commission re- commended its acceptance, Mr. Mur- phy's father happened to be one of the Commissioners, hence a hue and cry of favoritism was raised. The Globe's scandal however didn't work, for Aet- ing-Premier Foy declined to accept the recommendation of the Commis- sion, and fresh advertising will now be done. Ontario has an honest Gov- ernment. In the meantime it is amusing, to say the least, toe watch the righteous indignation of the Globe at the Commission for what at most was an error of judgment, and the vindictive spirit in which it pursues Mn Murphy, a man of the highest character. Does the Globe think people forget its silence when the late government gave away pulp wood and other valuable concessions to party friends by mere order-in-coeu- cil i' ; Mems 1 —Daniel Campbell, who was com- mitted to jail at Goderich awaiting re - moval to the House of Refuge, died in the jail on Thursday. ---'While the Toronto papers are boasting of early peaches, we may re- mark that a Goderich gardener, Chas. 4S'ells, had. ripe peaches and fully headed cauliflowers on sale last Satur- day. —The rumor that Goderich is to have a second up-to-date planing mill seems to be well founded. It is said it will Iikely be erected near the G. T. R., probably on the boiler works pro- perty. —Mr. Jonathan Miller of Goderich has purchased the Bogg's hotel at Carlow and is now hi possession. He will spend considerable money in im- provements and thoroughly moder- nize the place. --Fergus Somers, the little son of Mr. Samuel Somers, Seaforth, swal- lowed a copper on Wednesday after- noon, which became lodged in the passage between the throat and stom- ach. The doctor has been unable to retnove it. —Mr. Alex. Smith, the "Bee King," of Stanley, says this is going to be a poor year for honey, the blossoms not seeming to have the necessary amount of sweetness. He imports his breeding queens from Italy, and purposes in fu- ture to devote more of his time to raising queen bees than to honey. —Mr. Jas. B. Holden, who has just been elected to represent the Vermil- lion district in the Alberta Legisla- ture, is married to a daughter of Mr. 11I. A. Worth, who was born in Mit- chell, and is a brother of Mrs, W. R. Davis, Mitchell. lair. Ile then launehed out for himself in the grain and produce line, which he eon- tleicted till about nine years ago, and has since lived retired. Ile was twice harried. A widow and seven children survive him, —The Owen Suit reports the follow- ing matrimonial mix-up ;--"In this town there is tt man who resides in one part of the town, while his better b aifeeor he would probably say bis "worser" half --resides in .another sec- tion of the town. Of course there would be nothing strange about this commonrlaee state of affairs had not another Owen Sound resident become deeply enamored with the wife in question, Well, Mr, 13, was escorting leges. A, home one evening when out of the shales of night popped Mr, A. and expostulated with 31r. 13, for keeping company with his wife. Then Illessre. A. alai 13. had A ilstic en- counter, and in the melee Mrs, A. came in for a fair shire of ill usage. Me. A. preferred a charge against Mr. B. and the latter was fined $2 and costs, amounting to $2.80 which was promptly paid," —Very favorable reports are coming in as to the prospects of our apple, pear and plum orchards in the vicini- ty and throughout the county of Huron generally. The yield will not be quite so heavy as was expected in the spring, owing to the failing off of Lt large quantity of immature fruit, but reducing the yield has had the ef- fect of bringing out liner specimens, and it is expected that there will be a very large percentage of the fruit this fall that will class as No. 1. The ap- pies especially are particularly free from scab and the destructive codling moth does not appear, so far, to have done much damage. As far as we have seen the late waiter varieties will not be heavy, such as the bald - wins, spies, manus, etc., but the kings, blenheiins and other late fall varieties were never better and they will be the principal apples for shipment this fall. A notable feature of the fruit crop this year is the clean and healthy con- dition of the foliage of the trees and the consequent well-developed speci- mens. In former years the snow (Farneese) apples and Flemish beauty pears were so disfigured with scab spots that they could not be shipped, but this season they are well develop- ed and many barrels will probably be sent away. This change must be at- tributed to the favorable climatic con- ditions of refreshing showers anti plentiful sunshine, for very few of our orchardists have sprayed their orch- ards, that operation not being much practised here, although recommend- ed by the more advanced fruit -grow- ers in other parts of the Province. , . .z _ 1 The Tonic Of Health.
