Mr, F. Buchanan of Toronto was in
Wingham over Sunday, and his many
friends were pleased to greet him once
more.
Mr. J. E. Mulholland, of Gorrie, has
been visiting in this locality. He has
spent the summer in Buffalo, and we
regret to say has been in ill health.
We hope Huron's salubrious climate
will prove an effective restorative.
Mr. and Mrs. Roderus went to Lon-
don last week to see their son, Will.,.
and daughter, Miss Ada. Will. was
laid up for a couple of weeks by a
severe cut on one leg, from a large
piece of glass, but is now able to be at
his post of duty again.

Ministers and church workers generally, are

churches.
The Young People's Sooieties of
Stratford Presbytery are contemplating
the maintenance of a missionary in the
foreign field.
The induction of Rev. Perrin to the
charge of Wroxeter Presbyterian
Church took place last Thnrsday, and
Mr. Perrin preached the Initial sermon
of his pastorate on Sunday last.
The Methodist churches throughout
Canada will endeavor to raise $250,000
on the Iast Sunday in October, The
amount will be in connection with the
bicentennial of John Wesley's birth,
and will be applied to the extension of
church. work in the Northwest.
Archdeacon. Sinclair (England) has
created a sensation in writing in a
church paper, when he said the greater
number of the clergy of the Church of
England have not enough to eat and
drink. Hundreds are clothed in second
hand garments sent by charitable socie-
ties. Many have no fuel. Leaving
out curates, more than 7,000 incum-
bents' families receive less than £180 a
year. Their lives are one perpetual
struggle to keep alive and remain free
of debt.
Next Sunday, Harvest Home services
will be held in Wiugham Methodist
church. The Trustees are asking for
Iiberal Thankofferings to aid them in
reducing indebtedness on the church on
October 1st. It has been already reduc-
ed to $6,000, and a liberal response on
Sunday next will enable the Trustees
to make a farther material reduction on
October 1st, and thus Iessen the interest
tor next year. The members did well
last year, raising for all purposes, $6,-
746.83. They have stood nobly by their
church enterprise, and will no doubt
continue to do so, until the entire in-
debtedness is removed. •
The anniversary services of White-
church Presbyterian church will be held
next Sunday. Rev. W. R McIntosh
B. A., of Elora will preach at 10.30 and
7, and Rev. G. M. Dann in the after-
noon at 3. On Monday evening a high
class entertainment will be held. Marl-
ette LaDell, the talented Elocutionist,
and Mrs. Caldwell, the gifted Soprano
have been secured and a rich program
is ousurod. This entertainment is to
take the place of the customary tea -
meeting. Tickets are 50ets. The pro -
coeds of the entertainment and the
special freewill offerings on Sunday
will be devoted to the Building fund.

A member from Calvin Chureh are
attending the convention of the Young
People's Societies of Maitland Presby-
tery, in Whitechurch.
Jas. Forrester exhibited his splendid
heavy draught team at London Exhi-
bition. Although only 4 year olds,
they weigh 1890 lbs. each.
James Agar has been busy in the
neighborhood of St. Augustine thresh-
ing during the past week. Grain is
yielding well and is a good sample,
Miss Sarah Smith of St. Helens, we
are pleased to say, is able to be home
again after having been absent for
some time in a hospital, on account of
ill health.
J. C. Martin and R. Miller of St.
Helens Ieft last week for Montreal ;
Mr. Martin to take his last year's
course in medicine and Mr. Miller to
take it position in the 0. P, R. offices.
J. 11. McClinton left on Tuesday
morning for Manitoba to look after
some property which he purchased
last winter : he ra taking along a ear -
load of apples anda considerable quan-
tity of honey,
Although the weather of Sunday and
Monday, lath and 14th, was not alt
that could be desired for the Donny-
brook, anniversary, large congrega-
tions greeted the Rev. Mr. Wilson bf
Nile, at the Sunday services: We are
sure they were amply repaid by the
excellent discourse which they had the
privilege of listening to at each service
also the singing by Miss E. M. Pater-
son of Auburn. The concert Monday
evening was one of a very high class
being the best ever given in Donny-
brook. Mr. Armstrong and Mise Peart
of Lueknow, rendered a number of ex-
cellent selections with Miss Smith as
accompanist, also Mrs. Armstong of
Lucknow, and Miss Brock of Wing -
ham, each gave two excellent recite
tions which were well received. Re-
ceipts, $50.

Ed, Kraeling has returned home
from his trip out West.
W. Dore delivered two of his bug-
gies to Wm, Bell on Friday,
E. J. Mason has accepted a position
as junior clerk in the Bank of Hamil-
ton.
The. Apple Evaporator with a large
staff of employees is in operation,
night and day at present.
Our Baseball team journeyed to
Wingham bn Saturday and were de-
feated by the team of that town.
Trinity Church is closed for repairs
for a few Sundays; the services wilt
he conducted in the Temperance Hall.
A number of our citizens attended
the concert by the Coldstream Guards'
Band on Wednesday evening in Lon-
don.
Mr. S. Herrington has sold his gen-
eral store business to Mr. Bender •of
Dashwood, Mr. Herrington leaves this
week for the West ; his family remain
with us for the present at least.
The Epworth League Society of the
Methodist Church have purchased a
high class new piano from a London
firm and will give a first-class musical
concert in the Methodist church in
the evening of Thanksgiving day,
The officers of the Agricultural
Society are making extensive prepar-
ations for the coming Fall Fair to be
held on Oct. 6th and 7th. They have
already secured the services of the
Clinton Band for the two days of the
Fair.
Salem.
Mrs. R, Mitchell returned to London
hospital last week.
John McTavish left for Toronto a
week ago, where he intends to have
an operation on his eye.
Mise Emma Mulvey of Wingham
and Miss Ada Gallaher drove to the
latter's home on Saturday afternoon
last. They report that Mrs. Gallaher
is improving nicely under the skilful
care of Drs. Chisholm.
The Harvest home on Monday night
wasadecided success. The programme
was given by the Brussels friends, and
the church was well filled. If the
night had been fine the crowd would
have been greater. Salem is the place
for a good time.
The Rev. McKelvie, his wife and
sister met with an accident on Sunday
last while they were coming home
from Salem ; the front wheel came off
the buggy and the horse got fright-
ened and unmanageable. Miss Me-
Kelvie and Mrs. McKelvie jumped, the
former receiving a shaking up and the
latter a badly sprained ankle. Mr.

A very pretty wedding took place
at the residence of Mr, James Coulter
on Tuesday of Last week when their
daughter, Clara 0., was united to Mr,
Alex. Nethery of Sarnia, The cere-
mony was peufor,ned by Rev, J, Ed-
monds of .Blyth, At 12 o'clock, high
noon, the bride entered the parlor
leaning on her father's arm, to the
strains of Wagner's Bridal March from
"Lohengrin," played by Mise Ada
Nethery, The bride wore a costume
of ivory silk, trimmed with Duchesse
lace and pearl drop ornaments, and
carried a bouquet of white bridal roses,
She was attended by Miss Minnie Neth.

a bouquet of pink asters. Miss Gwen-
nie Edmonds, of Blyth; dressed in
white organdie, made a pretty flower
girl. The groom was assisted by Mr,

Congratulations being over, the guests
repaired to the dining room, where an
excellent wedding dejeimer was served,
The groom's gift to the bride was a
beautiful bracelet. The happy couple
left on the afternoon train for London,
Detroit and other points. The bride's
travelling suit was of blue snowflake
trimmed with Duchesse lace and me-
dallions.
The Council met on Sept. 14th, ac-
cording
scording to adjournment; minutes of
last meeting read and confirmed. On
motion of Shaw and Taylor, Walter
Youill was granted 20 cts, per rod for
20 rods of wire fence on east boundary
at lot 80, con. 4. On motion of Jackson
and Shaw, Councillors Code and Tay-
lor were instructed to have about 30
rods of roadway opposite lot 8, on 0th
con. line straightened and improved.
On motion of Taylor and Shaw, the
Reeve and Conn. Code were appointed
a deputation to meet the Wingham
Council in respect to proposed im-
provements on west boundary, south
of Wingham. On motion of Shaw
and Code, Conn, Taylor was instructed
to expend $30 in gravelling at lot 5 on
4th con. On motion of Jackson and
Code, the Reeve and Treasurer were
instructed to borrow $400 to meet cur-
rent expenses. Tenders were opened
for debentures in connection with La-
mont drain and on motion of Shaw
and Jackson, the tender of Wm. C.
Brent was accepted. it being the most
satisfactory. On motion of Taylor
and Code, Mr. R. Vanstone of Wing -
ham was appointed solicitor for the
township of Morris. Accounts were
ordered to be paid, and Council ad-
journed to meet on October 19th.

Mrs. John Robertson, of Wroxeter,
called on some of her old friends here
last week.
Mr. and Mrs. Robt. King and Miss
Craig, of Goderich, were guests of Mrs.
J. Johnston.

Fair last week were : Robert Black,
Robert Shaw, Joseph Pugh and Thos.

Mrs. Adam Cleghorn, who went on
a trip to Manitoba a few weeks ago, is
suffering there from an attack of
typhoid fever.
Last Sabbath was Children's Day
in the Presbyterian Church. The
church was nicely decorated with
flowers. The singing by the children
was much enjoyed.
Next Tuesday evening, Rev. W. J.
West, M. A., will deliver a missionary
lecture, "The Open Door of the West,"
in the Presbyterian church, Mr. West
purposes giving his impression of the
West which he visited in June last,
The monthly meeting of the Wo-
men's Institute was held at the home
of Mrs. Joseph Pugh on Wednesday,
Sept, 16th and was well attended.
Miss M. Scott read a very interesting
paper on 'Pickling", Discussion on
various topics of interest took place
and music was supplied by Master
P. Pugh,

The Presbyterian Church here,
will hold their anniversary services
next Sabbath. Sept. 27th, Rev. W. R,
McIntosh of Elora will conduct morn-
ing and evening service, and the Pas-
tor, the service at 3 in the afternoon.
On Monday evening, aepeeial attrac-
tion will be offered in the form of a
high class Entertainment, conducted
by Miss Marietta LaDell, the great
Canadian Entertainer, and Mrs. Cald-
well, for many years Canada's sweet-
est singer. Instrumental music will
be furnished. by Miss Houghton and
Mrs. Hanna of Wingham, Mrs,
Hanna being accompanist for the
evening. Whitechurch has always
sought to give the best possible Value

by the pastor to wipe out the remain-

Brussels.
Brussels Public school receives $600
this year as their share of the County
Continuation grant.
Miss Blakeman, who has been a resi-
dent of Brussels for over 20 years, has
sold her house and lot on John street
to John Budd, of Morris, who purposes
moving to town this fall.
The road between Brussels and Sea -
forth is bad ; the worst part of it is the
1} miles nearest our , town and the
worst portion of the 1 miles is that
within --the corporation. Something
should be done about it before the fall
rains set in.
Brussels Oddfellows will likely go to
Wingham on Thanksgiving day to
attend an At Home arranged by the
brethren there at which several de-
grees will be demonstrated. It is ex-
pected that several Grand Lodge offi-
cers will be present.
Tuesday Ira Gerry left town on a
trip to the West. Whether he will
become a resident, will depend, no
doubt, on the way business oppor-
tunities present themselves. Be will
represent the Brussels woolen factory
and the Bainton Bros.' Glove works,
of Blyth,
After a .residence in Brussels of 24
years during which Andrew Currie
was associated with his father and
afterwards his successor in a large and
successful butchering business, he has
disposed of the business to his brother,
John Currie, and his nephew. Andrew
Currie, both of Seaforth. The new
firm will take possession a week from
next Monday.
