station by visitors to the Toronto Fair
this year were nearly $700.

The Rev. James Murchison preached
to a large congregation in the Presby-
terian church on Sunday morning last.
Messrs. S. Nicholson and Alex. Mo-
Leod of Kinloss left on Tuesday for It
trip to Manitoba and Northwest Ter-
ritories.
Angus McDonald of Kincardine, has
pnrohased P. McDevitt's interest iu the
Lucknow hotel on the corner of Ross
and Campbell streets, and will take pos-
session of the business next week.
Mr. David Graham of Chicago, re-
turned on Monday last, to visit his
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Graham
of this village. Jt is nearly sixteen
years since Dave left here for Mexico
where he spent a year with Mr. Wm.
Mellis, formerly of Lucknow. Since
that time he has travelled a great deal.
and has practically been around the
world. He joined the American navy
and was electrician for four years on
board of the Brooklyn, the flag ship
of Admiral Sampson, during the
Spanish-American war. He speaks
both the Spanish and Chinese languages
fluently, and after the close of the war,
he filled important positions for the
American Government, both in Cuba
and the Phillipines. He has travelled
in almost every land, ocean end sea on
the face of the globe.

—An apple barrel factory in South
Ontario is making 45,000 barrels this
season.
—One farmer in Ontario County, N.
Y., marketed $1,700 worth of dried ber-
ries this season.
—The trustees of con, 10, Howiok, have
engaged Miss McKelvey for 1904 at an
advance of salary.
—There is considerable grain in the
vicinity of Mildmay still unharvested;
some of it was cut in August.
—The Tasker farm on con. 18, Hul-
let, composedof 225 acres changed hands
last week for $10,000; S. Plumtree, Mc-
Killop, was the purchaser,
—Canada has spent nearly $1,000,000
on its waterways and is well satisfied
with the bargain. A proportionate ex-
penditure in the United States would be
$1,600,000,000.
—R. Sanderson of 6th con., Howiok,
purchased the farm owned by Jos. Mee
for $3,850. R. S. will now have a beau-
tiful 200 aore farm—the homestead and
the one just pnrohased.
—On Sept, 28 the ratepayers of
Guelph will vote on a by-law to par.
chase the Guelph Street Railway. The
price agreed upon is $78,000, of which
$30,000 is to be in cash, $48,000 repre-
senting the bonded debt.
—The Dairy Division, Ottawa, reports
that as a direct result of the Canadian
exhibit at the Osaka Exposition, three
new customers have recently' been se-
cured in Japan for the butter made at
the Government creameries in the
West.
—H. Elford of Holmesville, sunt a
consignment of plums to one of our
cities upon which the express charges,
&o., amounted to something over $2.
The gross returns for the same were 90
cents so that aside from the plums he
was a good deal out on the transaction.
—At the Division Court in Gorrie the
case of the Harriston Pork Packing Co.
against Hy, Grainger and six others,
who failed to pay up for subscribed
stock, was in Grainger's case dismissed,
as he olaimed he never signed for shares;
judgment was reserved in the other
oases but it is generally supposed the
defendants will have to pay.
—The Port Rowan, Ont„ News says
that F. Burton, a patron of -the Clear
Creek cheese factory, sent 13,562 pounds
of milk from thirteen cows to the cheese
factory during June. The greatest
quantity for any one day was 477
pounds. and the average per clay was
452 pounds. The value of the cheese
was $104.50. Who can beat that•
—Walter F. Moore, of Watford, met
a peculiar death at a threshing. Edward
Boulby was engaged cleaning the sieves
at the rear of the separator when the
handle of his fork caught in the fan of
the blower, driving it with terrific force
over his shoulder, one of the prongs strik-
ing Moore in the chin and penetrating
his throat. The force of the blow broke
his neck and death was instantaneous.
—Eliza Geddes, beloved wife of Mr.
Wm. Smith of Culross, died at the
family residence on Monday Sept. 17th,
in her 68th year. She was one of the
oldest residents of Culross and was
highly respected by everyone. She leaves
behind to mourn her loss, her husband,
two sons, William and Robert, and four
daughters, Mrs. Jas. Donaldson, Mrs. J.
Clark, Mrs. Braden, Mrs. R. Grant.
—Local doctors at Ottawa are in-
terested in the case of Mrs. Rivet, of
Aylmer. Following a slight hemorr-
hage of the lungs, her pulse went up to
200 beats per minute, and she appeared
to be in a state of collapse. This lasted
for a week, when the pulsation dropped
to 180, and remained that way for an-
other seven days. Subsequently the
woman rallied, her pulse returned to
the normal state, and she is now fooling.

—A serious accident befel Alex. Hurd,
sr., of Elma, on Tuesday. He was
ploughing at the rear part of his farm,
when in some manner ono of the horses
fell on him, pinning him to the ground.
The horse was unable to rise, and held
him fast for more than an hour. The
horse at last got free and Mr. Hurd was
able to unhitch the team, which went
straight home, while he crawled to the
house, where it was found that he was
seriously hurt.
—Fred. Cords, of Elmwood, who in-
vented a bag,holder, has just thought
out a now cattle guard invention. His
gate is of iron, and lies flat on the
ground until there comes along some-
thing, it may be a one -eyed steer or a
human being with two eyes, it don't
make any difference so long as the ob-
ject weighs 85 pounds or over. Then
up jumps the gate into a perpendicular
position, and farther progress in that
direction is effeotnaliy barred.
—After nearly four weeks of suffering
from the terrible burning which she re-
ceived through the explosion of a lamp,
at the Station hotel, Listowel, Miss Lot-.
tie Feoman succumbed to her injuries
on Sunday morning. So terrible were
her burns that the doctors had little or
no hope of her recovery, and had it not
been for previous robust health the end
must have come sooner. Death was a
happy release to the poor sufferer, She
was in her seventeenth year.

The Government will spend three or
four hundred dollars in granolithio
sidewalks around Clinton's new post
office.
Rev. Dr. Stewart has completed
twenty-five years of faithful service as
pastor of Willis Presbyterian Church.
His congregation commemorated the
event by presenting him with a gold
watch, and Mrs. Stewart with a Cabinet
of Silver.
The largest individual shipment of
stock in any one day for years was load-
ed at our station on Saturday for Mr.
S. H. Smith. There were 141 head in
the bunch here and 20 at Goderich, re-
quiring 7 cars to take them to Toronto
Junction from whence they will be
shipped to Glasgow. Nearly 200,000
pounds of beef is represented in this
shipment.
A meeting of the House of Refuge
building committee of the county coun-
cil was hold on Friday last with the fol-
lowing present: Cantelon, Bowman,
Hicks, Lockhart and Kerr, Mr. Can-
telon was elected chairman. It was de-
cided to recommend to the council an
addition 42x62 with a double verandah
on the south and east sides. This ad-
dition will give accommodation for
about twenty morn inmates and will
also permit of the sane ones being kept
apart from those that are luney. There
aro a number of the latter in the House
and that they should be constantly in
the company of those not so afflicted
has been a hardship. Plans and speci-
fications will be submitted to the county
council at its next mooting.
