Residence -Patrick Street, 5. former residence, where night calls receive promptmpt atat- all Bros. - Phone 8t The People's Furniture Store tendon. i UNDERTAKING * -The total *capital invested in railways and canals in Canada $1,100,000,000. * * -The Wisconsin dairy industry employs 1,700 hands at an annual cost for wages of nearly $1,- 000,000. * * -During the fiscal year ending the 30th of June last, the total number of immigrant arrivals in Canada was 67,230, an increase of 18,081 over the previous year, the greatest gain, 8,325, being in ar- rivals from the States. * The Ottawa Journal says :-Pos- sibly Tarte is a raven sent out from the political ark on the Hill by the Liberal Noabs to see if there are signs of the high tariff flood abat- ing. Later on the "sunny ways" dove may go on in search of the olive leaf. they have evidence of unparalleled corruption in the North Grey cam- paign, According to the provisions of the law two circuit judges will sit on the case. Mr. Boyd is satis- fied that he will be counted in on the scrutiny, and is confident that the Liberal candidate will not only lose his seat but be disqualified,as well. However, in four weeks the courts will be at it, and Mr. Ross' splendid majority of one will again be wobbling in the balance, though the Liberals hope that it will not be found wanting. * -Dr. Bryce, of the Provincial Board of health, looks for a good many sporadic outbreaks of small- pox in Ontario during the coming winter among unvaccinated per- sons in spite of the efforts of the department to stamp out the much -dreaded disease. * * * -The British Columbia foreign lumber fleet of 1901 numbered sixty sailing ships or barques and eight steamers. They carried Can- adian lumber to Australia, South Africa, Chili, Japan,. China, India, Germany and Great Britain to the extent of sixty-five millions of feet. *** • The ':':ace * * * --A traveller, who recently spent seven months in New Zea- land, gives in a current periodical his impressions of that country. He is not favorably impressed with the climate, as it is foggy. Rent is high ; wages are higher than in England, but cost of living is higher by 25 per cent. There are fewer stoppages of work from strikes than in any other country, thanks chiefly to the principle of compulsory arbitration ; but this however, he says, is by no means working quite smoothly. It is quite on the cards that the men may take action for its -repeal, and that the employers may be found defending it. He is pleased with the New Zealand Factory Act, chiefly because it forbids any boy or girl with a less wage than $1.25 a week being employed,, and also because it fixes the hours of adult males at forty-eight per week, and those of women at forty-five. The railways are in the hands of State, and the people having one person, one vote, and all elections on one day, have government under better control than is the case in England. -On Saturday, the hearing of ten election, and eight cross peti- tions was transferred to Toronto for October 28th, which means that they will probably be dismissed when called. Among them are South Huron against H. Eilber, and cross petition against W. Y. McLean, and West Huron against M. G. Cameron. This will leave twenty-four instead of thirty-four petitions upon which the battle in the courts will be fought, and nine instead of seventeen cross petitions. * * * The Royal Commission on the Financial condition of the Province of Ontario in its report said -"The methods of the department and its financial records are excellent and have been so for many years. The receipts by the various depart- ments of government are evidently paid over to the treasurer with promptness." The truth of the matter is that the system of book- keeping is so wretchedly bad, the audit so imperfect, and the pay- ments in some cases held back so long, that it was possible for a gov- ernment official to become a de- faulter to the extent of $40,000 or more. That it is time for a change is again proven to be a. truthful statement. * " * -The contract for the construc- tion of the Temiskaming Railway was hist week awarded by the com- mission to A. R. Macdonell, of Glengarry, who was the lowest tenderer. The contract calls for 110 miles of road, clearing the right of way, grading, ballasting, bridging and tract?; -laying ready for operation. The commission will furnish rails, fastenings, and the superstructure for the bridge at Montreal River. The contrac- tor, on the other band, is to manu- facture the ties, culverts, fence posts and telegraph poles from the timber along -the right of way. $ separate contract will be required, however for an additional 200,000 ties ; this will complete the first 60 miles, which must be finished by Dec. 31st, 1903. For Dress Goods, Silks, Gloves, Ladies' Coats, Furs, Men's and Boys' Suits and Hats, still continues at the KENT BLOCK In Prints, Cretonnes, Art Muslins and Curtain Stuffs, the variety is large and the goods new. On Thursday morning, Sept. 25th, the home of James Lane, of Lanes, township of Ashfield, was the scene of a pretty wedding, the contracting par- ties being Mr. Lane's daughter, Miss Fanny, and Charles Anderson.
