-The Ontario Department of Agri-
culture is endeavoring to eliminate the
"fake" element from fall fairs, and to

this fall.
Boboaygeon, Sept. 3. -Bears are re-
ported to be roaming the country in the
vicinity of Silver Lake; about twelve
miles north-east of this village, in flocks
like sheep. Wm. Coulter, mail driver,
went out into his oat field to see whether
the grain was ready to be 'harvested,
when he ran across no less than three
old bears and two pairs of cubs feeding
on his crop and tramping it to the
ground.
-The estate of the late Samuel Sloane
of Goderich, is valued at about $100,000.
Among the bequests are one of $1,000 to
the London conference of the Methodist
church for the Fronoh mission work in
Quebec, and one of the same amount to
the Presbyterian church for a similar
purpose. The balauce of the estate is
left, almost without exception, to broth-
ers and sisters, nephews and nieces of
the deceased. The Ontario Government
of course, comes in for a share under the
Succession Duties Act,
Howick.
Lakelet mail carrier, Jas. Horton
has 165 bushels of wheat from 3 acres,
and the straw was something wonderful
Then Con. Roever has 750 bushels of
wheat off not many acres and that
amount and 150 bushels of barley were
threshed in an afternoon by the Binkleys.
Fail wheat will be sown a great deal
later this year than formerly as the har-
vest was so late and prevented work on
the wheat ground. Little if any wheat
is sown yet.
Another death occurred west of Lake -
let on Friday evening. For some years,
Mrs. Wm, Wallace, Sr. has been affect-
ed with an affection of the heart. On
Friday evening she started from her son
Robert's, who lives a short distance
from her home, and some of the mem-
bers of the family saw her fall. Im-
mediate assistance was lent, but when
they got her into a buggy she expired,
She was a fine kind hearted lady and her
demise will be mourned by the members
of her family and by a large circle of
friends.
Afive-year-old son of Christian Binkle
Jr. of Howick, fell off a load of grain in
the field last *thnrsday and one of the
wheels of the waggons cut a fearful
gash in the little fellow's head. Had
not the waggon been stopped in time
the boy's head would have been crushed
to a jelly.
Attwood.
Some six years ago several farmers
living on the 4th con. east realized that
their farms contained a considerable de-
posit of marl, suitable for cement. A
sample was sent to an analyst, who
pronounced it to be a very fine sample.
One particular feature was the presence
of a considerable depth of clay, without
which no cement factory can work. An
American capitalist at that time inspect-
ed the deposit and made an offer for the
farms, but the price was not high
enough to snit the owners. Thus the
matter was allowed to drop until recent-
ly, when M. M. Hiles, our enterprising
merchant, quietly took the (natter up
and proceeded to make a thorough in-
vestigation. The next thing was to get
the farmers who owned the property to
sign writings giving Mr. Hiles the right
to float a company, in order to success-
fully carry out the enterprise. This he
succeeded in doing and now all that is
required is the necessary capital to con-
struct an up-to-date cement industry,
which would employ hundreds of hands
and bo a great boon to Attwood, This
marl is to bo found on the farm of Jas.
and Edward Buchanan, Edward Row.
laud, William Ooxon, Robert Moore and
Edward Smith. In all these aro about
two hundred acres of marl deposit,
which at the average rate of usage
would last one hundred and fifty or two
hundred years. --Bee.
