Campbell ii THE DRUGGIST Elllllllllll1llllllllllll10111lllt "JUST MAKING BELIEVE." One Way to Altskit %%In Dun QM World Seem noloitcr, There is many a failure on the part of "grown ups" to comprehend the mental processes of their imaginative superiors --the children. Some clumsy Person calls the most charming device of fancy "another of those naughty fibs." 13y that condemnation he sets up a well nigh impassable barrier be- tween himself and the clilidish dreamer, Not long ago a grown up was accost- ed on the street by a dainty maiden of four, who nodded a bright good morn- ing and then said, "Isn't there going to bo a wedding down there?' pointing across the square. "I think not" said the obtuse adult. "I haven't heard of any weddtug." "Are you sure? I think there's going to bo one," persisted the little maiden, "I don't see any flowers or carriages, and 1 guess you are mistaken," replied the champion of dull fact. Then the tiny pleader drew nearer, and with an entreating touch of her band and a voice lowered out of hear - lug of the fairies she breathed: "Please say there's going to ben wed- ding. 'I'm just making believe." Could the power of Imagination go further? Could there be a simpler de- vice for turning this dull world into a garden of flowers and sweet music than this same gentle "making be- lieve?" • Imagination often proves to be the door that opens int/ a high philosophy of life. We all remember Dickens' braye little marchioness. "Did you ever taste orange peel and water?" she de- manded of the gay Dick Swiveller. IIe replied that he never clad tasted that ardent be-verage. "If yon make believe very much, it's very nice," said the sniall servant, "but if you don't, you know, it seems as If it would bear a little mote seasoning cert. tainly." As long as life has its ups and downs It Is by no means impossible that to us all, old as well as young, there may come a time when we shall be glad to have acquired the accomplishment of making believe Very much. 5CANDT' :U i•LWAY TM' SPECIAL EXCURSIONS TO • Los Angeles and San Francisco, Cal. Upstairs in Shaw Block. LAZY AND COLD BLOODED. An Incident That Nearly Cort Sir laugh Rose Ulu Peerage.. Lord Strathnairn was the most Indo- lent, lackadaisical, languid person who ever dawdled along Piccadilly. When he was devastating central India and winning the splendid victories that im- mortalized his name, he was so lazy that he could not be got to dictate the dispatches recording his own triumphs. Months elapsed before these documents could be extracted from him, and thea they were brief and meager to the last degree. One day when Sir Hugh Rose he wan entertaining a gallant company at dinfler during the crisis of tho mu- tiny. With the utmost sang froid he was delighting those. near him With one of his best anecdotes. In the middle of it his orderly entered and after saluting exelaimnd, "We have captured 200 reb- els, sir." To him the general turned and, with that elegant courtesy of manner .In which • he prided himself, serenely replied, "Thank you, ser- geant." But the man still remained. Again interrupting his chief, he said, "But what are we to do with them, sir?" "Oh," replied Sir Ilugh, with a soft smile, "Haug them, of course." And he resumed his anecdote. In a little while Sir Hugh was again interrupted In the middle of another story by the sergeant, who came in and said, "Please, sir, we've hung the lot, sir." The general turned, bowed slight- ly and in the sweetest manner lisped, "Thanks, sergeant—very many thanks," and then went on with his anecdote as if nothing had' happened. This story came to the ears of Queen Victoria, and she Was so angry that it nearly cost Sir Hugh his peerage. —John Ward cou.2, Eiderslie got $820 for 4 head of cattle weighing 5020 lbs. --Tile annual statement of the O.P,R shows gross earnings for twelve months up to Juno 80 of $37,503,054, working expenses $23,417,142, not profits 14,085,- 012, an increase of net profits over 1901 of $1,970,537. —Mr, Woodrow who lives near Pieton, has 10 acres in strawberries, and the product of that field was this season sold for in the neighborhood of $3,500, None of his berries were sold for less than 50, and in some oases the price ran up to 10c per box. Beaverton, July 31,—Beaverton has an independent telephone system, estab- lished in opposition to the Bell Tele- phone Company, and giving good satis- faction to those using its lines. The rate per instrument is only $18 to farm- ers and $15 to those residing in the vill- age. The new Company is just a month or two old, and the 'phones have been in operation only a little over a month. The high rates demanded by the Bell Telephone Company are at the source of its organization. Kingston, July 31.—People here are excited over the reported presence in Navy Bay, on the east side of the Royal Military College, of a sportive sea ser- pent. It has various forms, according to various persons. It is first of all black, with a long writhing neok, something like a swan's, with a villainous head and fanged tongue. It has a long length in the water, and of good proportions. As many as eight persons have seen it at one time. Shots have been fired, but with ill -success. David',t Line. When David Belasco and H. C. Do Mille wrote "The Charity Ball," there was a speechinit that did not please Herbert Kelcey, leading man of the company. The words Kelcey objected to were quoted from one or David's psalms. Ignorant of its origin, Kelcey said to Mr. De Mille: "I don't like that line. It's bombas- tic and old fashioned." "The line is not mine, bet•Davrd's," replied De Mille, referring et " course to the psalmist'. "I thought sol" cried Kelcey trium- pliantly., "I'd recognize David Bolas- co's style anywhere." Clodericll.. The July Selectors met in the Court House on Wednesday, and selected jurors for the December Sessions, to be opened Dec. 9th. A number of G. T. R. ofAoialS were in town for two or three minutes last week, and it is rumored that they look- ed over the location of the new station. The Kensington Furniture factory employees are very busy these days, the orders aro so far ahead of the out- put. The Goderich Organ Co. is busy these days, and the stat still has to work overtime to keep up with the order list. The summer hotel was full this week, showing that those who held that such a building was needed in Goderich were Blot wrong. Last Friday at Ridgewood Farm, Col- borne, foreman Jona Thompson and James Dunbar loaded, hauled in, un- loaded and stowed away seventeen loads of hay in five hours. Each load. would average one and a half toes. Two more constables have been added to the county list, in the persons of Joshua Amos Cole, of Ethel, and Christ- opher Luke, Exeter. "My Grandfather's Clock" can well apply to a timepiece in the possessi5n of Mr. and Mrs. Jonathan Miller, recently of the Hotel Bedford. It was purch- ased from the maker by the late Thomas McCullough in Inniskillen Co., Ferm- anagh, Ireland, for a10 sterling nearly a century ago, and was brought by him to Canada in 1832 on the two -master "Brigg Acton," which sailed from Sutherland, It travelled by ox team, through forest and by blazed line, until Goderich town- ship was reached and Mr. McCullough got settled in his home. It is in a splendid state of preservation and keeps good time. A Gont•lemasi. Ono of our readers sends a nice story abort the cjilestion, "What is a gentle-, man?"
