In all, this amounts to $224,114, and the Interior Depart- ment has requisitioned for the issue of a cheque to this amount to be at once sent to the Government of Manitoba. nothing of waft are commonly called dairy products— butter, cheese, etc. The fact is that, in the Middle Kingdom at least, there are practically no grazing lands ;; a few goats, many pigs, and the slow but exceedingly useful water buffa- lo, are the only representatives of what we call "stock.” The absence of roads fit for wag- gon traffic is a very striking feature in the central and southern provin- ces. In the north there aro some highways suitable for vehicular traffic, but they aro so rough that nothing but a Peking cart can hold together when driven over them any considerable distance. At present almost every art and science in China is either stagnant or decadent. It would seem, there- fore, that the time for a renaissance is at hand. —June 2Gth was to be the occa- sion of a tremendous demonstration of human might. June 2Gth was solemnized by an Empire's realiza- tion of human weakness. An Em- pire assembles its war ships, calls its sons from the ends of the earth, fills the air with the music of its bands and the sky with the glory of its flags, and then realizes bow small a thing is human greatness in the eyes of Him in whose sight "a thousand years are as yesterday when it is past and as a watch in the night."— [Telegram. A correspondent furnishes the following for publication :— Now that the war in South Afri- ca is finiehed, it has been consider- ed advisable to take a look at the resources of the old flag and fin out what portion of the regular army was required for the task Taking the army state for the firs day of June, 1902, we find the there were, exclusive of depots, regiments of Life Guards, both r England ; 1 regiment of Royal Horse Guards, in England ; 7 regi- ments of Dragoon Guards, 5 i South Africa ; 21 regiments of Dra- goons Hussars, Lancers, 16 i South Africa; 10 battalions of Foot Guards, G in South Africa ;156 bat- talions a talions of Infantry, 78 in South Af- rica ; of the 197 regiments of caval- ry and battalions of infantry 1 were in South Africa ; 28 batteries of Royal Horse Artillery, 7 in Sou Africa ; 151 batteries of Royal Meld Artillery, 39 in South Africa 10 batteries of Mountain Artillery, 2 in South Africa ; 105 companies of Royal Garrison Artillery, 7 in South Africa ; 76 units of Royal Engineers, 23 in South Africa ; G companies of Army Service Corps 41 in South Africa ; 23 companies of Army Ordnance Corps, 9 in South Africa. - It will be easily seen that the ar- tillery was not in this to any ex- tent, but what was there kept up the record of the corps. It is made up of a class of men who always surrender when the last man is dy- ing at the trail of the gun. During this war a gunner was asked how he came to get the 'Victoria Cross. His answer was, "Because there was not another man left to give it to." It will be noticed that the Army Service Corps furnished the largest percentage, which shows the great I THE PEOPLE'S POPULAR J10. JAS. H. KERR. E. J. Davis go and take a back seat. In Mus- koka, the Liberal member, Dr. Bridgland, has to defend his elec- tion, and the Liberals retaliate by entering charges against Mr. Ma- haffy, the defeated Conservative candidate. Other protests are in preparation, and the courts are likely to have plenty to do. The appeal from the recount in. East Middlesex is likely to be dropped and a protest filed, for Capt. Robson is positive he was defeated by the dirty machine. Liberals ask that Mayor Hendrie of Hamilton be un- eeated, and Conservatives make the same request for McCart (Lib.) of Stormont. J. Dickenson (Lib.) South Wentworth, and Jas. Tuck- er (Con.) West Wellington, are also among those who must defend protests against their election. There are more to follow. Smith . Pethick. The transportation of ra- tions for man and horse is the whole secret of success or failure of an army. Out of 656 units of all arms 233 were in South Africa, leaving 423, or nearly double the forces in South Africa, for home, India and colonial duties. To this may be added the militia and vol- unteers of Great Britain and Ire- land, also the very large native army in India, and the militia and volunteers of Canada, Australia and other colonies. So that, taking all things into consideration, the army of the old flag was not so badly taxed as some have imagined. Another qnarter of a million of men could have gone into some other quarter of the world had it been necessary. But it is to be hoped that very many years will have rolled by before such a force is required again. Mr. Garrison, a mining engineer, writes in Cassier's Magazine an in- teresting article on this subject, from which we make a few extracts. The total area of the Chinese empire is something like 4,300,000 square miles. The eighteen pro- vinces comprising China proper, or the "Middle Kingdom," cover 1,- 298,000 square miles, while Man- churia has 390,000 and Thibet over 700,000 square miles. Probably but a small proportion of this vast area is totally unfit for human habitation ; most of it possesses a salubrious climate similar to that of the United States. When we hear of foreign nations, syndicates, and individuals seeking, and ap- parently obtaining for long terms of years, exclusive mining and railway concessions to which Chi- nese provinces, some of them near- ly as large as France, one is stag- gered by the very magnitude of the grants and the extraordinary stu- pidity of the Chinese in making them. In Central China it is estimated that something less than a quarter KILLING WILD MUSTARD. That wild mustard can be killed out has been fully demonstrated by Prof. Doherty of the Guelph Agri- cultural College, to whom is due the credit of devising a cheap and effective method of ridding Canada of this pernicious weed. A solu- tion of copper sulphate, or common bluestone, sprayed on with a spra- motor, will effectually rid a farm of this pest, Ten pounds of this material is placed in a coarse bag and suspended in about three gal- lons of boiling water. After the bluestone has been dissolved, which will be in fifteen or twenty minutes, the solution is strained into the pump barrel of the spramotor, which is then filled up with cold water to forty or forty-five gallons. This will spray an acre of ground, and the cost of spraying amounts to about 55 cents per acre. "By spraying a field for four suc- cessive seasons, mustard can," says Prof. Doherty, "be completely era- dicated. At least, all that will be left in the fifth season will be a few straggling plants, which can be re- moved by hand. The whole thing can be done at an expense of about $3 or $4 per acre, and you can always rely on fretting~ a this, man full meal for a r • greed fresh article at the `'ilztitirr est ' CEMENT AND TILT: WORKS. three meals per day, would amount at F.
