Members of the 33rd regiment will be
interested in the announcement that
Capt, 0. J. A, Cunningham -Dunlop, late
adjutant of tho regiment, is going out to
South Africa, He is enlisting as a pri-
vate in the contingent now being formed
in Canada.
George McMahon, one of our oldest
residents, passed away 011 Monday, De-
cember 23rd, after a long illness, The
deceased was born in the county of Mid-
dlesex in 1831, but had boon a resident of
Goderich for over fifty years.
A few days before Christmas Mr.
Lewitt, manager of the Goderich Knit-
ting Co., was waited upon by the em-
ployees of the factory, who presented
him with a handsome mantel clock, to-
gether with an expression of their es-
teem for him and of their appreciation
of his friendly interest in them.
The W. C. T. U. will bo glad to find
that we know two men in this town who
for some time havo given up the use of
spirituous liquors and they took no gold
euro either. We trust that they may
persevere in the great change in their
lives.
The Huron Poultry and Pet Stock As-
sociation ushered in the year 1902 with
crowing and cackling. It was well on
to midnight before the pens were placed
for the sixth annual show, and the offi-
cors and directors worked long and hard
to have everything put in. shipshape.
The official judge, Sharp Butterfield of
London, was on hand at 8 o'clock Wed-
nesday morning, and after glancing over
the various varieties, declared they were
some of the best birds he had ever sewn.
Later, he claimed a white Wyandotte
cock, the property of James Hardy, of
Goderich, and when the judging was
over Mr. Butterfield stated to the presi-
dent that some of,the birds were quite
good enough to go to the Boston show
which will bo held shortly.
Harriston.
At the police court in Guelph, on
Thursday, Wm. Morgan and Sankey
Hilts, the day engineer at the pork fac-
tory, Harriston, were given a prelimi-
nary hearing ou a charge of receiving
stolen goods, the property of Mr. Col-
borne, a merchant of Harriston. The
first witness was a lace of 17 years, named
James Henry Boynton, who told how he
with John Howell and James Wilson
robbed the store on the night of Decem-
ber 13 last, and afterwards went to the
factory, where they saw Sankey Hilts
and Wm. Morgan, and told them of
their thefts. Hilts and Morgan then
ipursuadecl the boys to go back to the
store and take sono dress goods and fur
collars for their wives, offering to pay
them for doing so. IIowell and Boynton
went to the store and obtained these
goods, after which Boynton sprinkled
coal oil over the counters and goods that
were on them and set fire to it. When
the boys got back to the factory they
gave the plunder to the prisoners. Dur-
ing the night the boys frequently went
out with the prisoners to see if the fire
bell was ringing, but not hearing it they
concluded the fire had gone out. Vow -
ever, at seven o'clock Morgan came in
and informed them the bell was.ringing,
so the boys loft the factory for the sceue
of their crimes. Morgan subsequently
paid $1,50 to Boynton for the stolen
staff he obtained, while Hilts paid $1.50
to Howell on the Saturday night follow-
ing. Tho prisoners were committed for
trial.
