Roly's Avenger. Every now and then the sagacity of a certain dog sauna to prove that in- telligent reasoning rather than mere instinet.accoants for his actions. A case in point L,told by a traveller who lately returned -from abroad. While he was in England he was the guest of a country gentleman who took great pride M the good-tempered relations that existed in one of his kennels of pedigreed dogs. With de- light he would paint out two favorites of his, Rory, a noble mastiff, and Roly, a little thoroughbred Scotch terrier, which were always the best of friends. One day the visitor and his host started to drive to a neighboring coun- ty. Shortly after they had arrived' at the inn where they were going to pass tho night they heard the sharp yelp- ' ing of a small dog mingled with the savage growls of the innkeeper's big mongrel. The stable boy said that a . strange little Scotch terrier had drift ed in from no one knew where, that the mongrel had bitten him, and that the terrier had run off. From the description of the dog the Englishman was convinced that the outbreak once it does occur. sten o P Y . They soothe the timid heart; Who has true manhood in him, he Seeks out the here's part. Do you know that thousands of lives are lost yearly in this province *muse communicable diseases are not reported to the Medi- cal Officers of Health in time to have quarantine and preventive measures taken to stamp out the outbreaks. Do you know that although breast feeding is Ly far the best method of bringing up a baby, less than fifty per cent. of babies threughout the province are fed for the first nine months at their mothers' breast. Do you know that there are thou- sands of young children growing up with physical defects of various kinds not being corrected—in fact without any medicine or nursing supervision For him the crag where eagles soar, The sea where ships are driven, The wild no foot has trodden o'er, The clouds by tempest riven, Look well the ox lies soft and warm, See well the sheep are fed; But let mans soul embrace the storm, whatever? This will comprise a series of lectures and demonstrations. Mr. Frei* C. Ir- win, Assistant Provincial Commission- er, will give a lecture at the opening of the course and several other mem- bers of the executive will attend the classes from week to week. Each les- son will take two hours, and it is ex- pected that several interesting fea- tures will be introduced. * * * * Thirteen tenderfeet Scouts were initiated into the 1st Ancaster Troop recently, before a large attendance of boy e and their parents. Assistant Commissioner Chas. W. Hensing and Frank C. Anders,, of Hamilton, were present, the former being the chief speaker of the evening, the latter act- ing as initiating officer. Mr. Homing, in his remarks, dwelt on the import - ane of the boys living up to their Scout promise and laws, and em- phasized the fact that boys who ful- filled their Scout obligations would be the men that Canada of to -morrow would be proud of. The petal lead- ers of the lst Hamilton Troop staged a very interesting and instructive dis- play, the chief feature of which was an excellent exhibition of club swinging. The officers from Hamilton were all impressed by the calibre of the boys shrewdly keeping out of sight until they reached their destination. It was past midnight -and the guests of the inn had retired, when suddenly there was a loud commotion in the stable yard, Awakened, the English- nian and his guest followed the ihn- keeper to the scene, and there they saw the big mongrel go down to de feat before a huge mastiff, while a lit- tle Scotch terrier danced round ex- i citedly. It was Roly and his friend Rory, the mastiff, who had wane to take the part . of his little comrade. The terrier had' obviously journeyed straight home and i with animal sagacity enlisted the sym- pathy of kis strong ally, the mastiff, which speedily returned with him to the scene of his trouble and undertook to aveage his wrongs.
