OFF GRAND BANKS
A SEA DAINTY OF WIDE
POPULARITY.
-Spearing the (Fish With Harts
peon is Exciting Sport Dur-
ing Late Summer Months.
In the fishing grounds of the Grand
Banks and cf the ooast of Cape Bre
ton, Canada possessles the most pro -
title haunts of the swordfish, whose
delectable cutlets find etch favor in
the dining tables of Eastern Canada
and the United States., Each year the
catch of this fish off the Nova Scotia
and Newfoundland coasts' accounts for
a substantial amount in the revenue
from Canada's fisheries. During the
inanth of August tains year there were
29,800 pounds of swordfish caught in
the George;3 Banks, and in September
38,200 pounds caught off Cape Breton.
Much of the Canadian oatch of other
years was landed at United States'
parts, and the cloning of these outlets
this year through the Fordney Tariff
led to the cancelling of the second trip
to the banks so that the present total
catch will probably show a decrease
after having increased for some years.
The catch in 1918 amounted to 4,300
cwt,, valued at $26,952; in 1,919 it rose
in 'value to $49,364, though production
was. less, being 3,645 cwt„ and last
year it amounted to 7,411 cwt., valued
at $90,417. ' •
The swordfish, which is so culled
from its proltamgation of the upper jaw
into a lensat pointed, sword -like, weap-
on which it -uses for defence and ag-
gression, is a sea dainty of universal
• popularity. In Canadian waters it
. •.ranges•. •1n size from seven to twelve
• feet, and in weight from three hun-
dred to six hundred pounds, though
specimens . are occasionally caught
which run to six and eight hundred
pounds. Its. food consists of the small-
er species. of fish which it secures- by
• dashing into achene, spt'aringastnany
of its number as possible, and devour-
ing them at leisure.
• Schooners-8pecialiy Fitted.
The capture of the swordfish forms
a regular branch of the Canadian At
• lantic fishing industry the weasron be-
teg, in the late summer months, and
numbers of • fishermen engage in the
pursuit. Schooners at this time are
especially fitted out for the chase, a
platform being raised on the bowsprit
where a coretant look -out is kept and
from which the harpooning is done.
At this time of year the swordfish,
which usually follows sohools of other
fish, which farm its prey, are to be
found as a rule basking in the sun on
the top of the water, The schooner
approaches them and from the raised
platform the feria is speared with a
harpoon. Tho tether of the weapon
is attached to ane or two casks which,
thrown overboard, act as a drag to
the impaled fish in its endeavor to get
away. A dory is then lowered from
the schooner and the exhausted fish
• pursued, overtaken and despatched
with.a bayonet.,
The chase is not altogether bereft of
excitement and hazard, the fish often
turning on the doxy, with what danger
traits occupants may be realized when
it is considered that the sword -like
proboscis is capable et penetrating a
six-inch oak Peak. Thus the scheme-
er pursues its way, harpooning and
bringing on board such sworesb as
it encounters until a substantial catch
has been made, when a return is made
to share and the fish marketed.

ache Means Kidney
Every utuscle in the body needs
constantly a supply of riola, red blood
in proportion to the work it does. The
muscles of the back ate umber a heavy
strain and have but little rest, When
the blood is thin they lack nourish-
ment, and the result is a •sensation of
pain in those muscles. Some people
think pain in the back means kidney
trouble, but the best medical authori-
ties agree that backache Seldom ar
never has anything to do with the kid-
neys, Organic kidney disease may
have progressed to a critical point
without developing a pain in .the back.
This being the case, pain in the back
should always lead the sufferer to look
to the condition of his blood, It will
he found in most cases that .the use
of Dr, Williams' Pink Pills to build up
the blood will stop the sensation of
pain in tate til -nourished muscles of
the back. How much better it is to
try Dr, Williams' fink Pills for the
blood than to give way to unreason-
able alarm about your kidneys. If you
suspect your kidneys, any doctor can
make tests in ten minutes that will
set your fears at rest, or tell you the
worst. But in any event to be per-
fectly healthy you must keep the blood
in good condition, and for this , pur-
pose no other medicine can equal Dr.
Williams' Pink Pills,
You can get these pills through any
dealer in mediciue, or by snail at 50
cents a box or six boxes for $2,50 from

HEALTH EDUCATION
BY DR. J. J. MIDDLETON
• Provincial Board of HealthrOntarlo
Dr. Middleton will bo glad to answer questions on Pubiie Health mat-
ters through this column. Address hiro.,at Spading House, Spadina
Crescent, Toronto.
There appears to be a doubt in the
mind of many of my correspondents
as to what ' Public Health actually
means. At the bead of the column
in which I write articles on Public
Health, , questions on Public Health
subjects are invited, end I shall: be
este" to answer such questions. But
in many cases letters are receved from
people asking me for suggestions re-
garding treatment for some ailment
they. have .and which they would like
to get rid of. Now I desire to make
it plain that I cannot answer questions
of this sort. It would be tselese for
me to do so if I wanted to, for I have
not seen the patient and could not
diagnose their trouble from state-
ments in a letter. Besides, treatment
of disease is the particular and special
work of the family or local physician,
He is the man on the spot and the
right man to consult in cases where
medical advice is desired.
For instance, one woman writes
that she enjoys my articles on Public
Health and wants to know if I could
tell her What to do for a "floating kid.-
ney." In another case a mother writes
to say that her bully had a heat rash
ttnd wishes to know what she should
do for it, while just this morning I
received a letter from an old gentle-
man to say that he had fits and want-
ed me to tell him what treatment he
should adopt.
Now, there are many similar letters
reaching me which I need not relate
J
here, but in every case 1 have to refer
5•ccll ease's to the physician.
The work of • a Public Health offi-
cial deals largely with hygiene and
preventive medicine, and by these
terms I mean ways and'means of pre-
serving health and keeping the body
and mind in full strength and vigor,
and giving warnings of danger to
health that will undoubtedly follow
neglect of hygienic principles either
in personal or community life. As
regards the care and treatment of
the :sick,' that is a phase of medical
work by itself, andathe local physician
ie the man to deal wiibh sickness in
any camtnunity,
The Public Health official is really
a teacher and sanitarian. His work
is preventive, rather than curative—
in fact about the only instance where
Public Health officials undertake
treatment is in the prevention or con-
trol of ooantnur cable or infectious
diseases when such diseases are a
menace to the health of other people.
My advice to all, those who write to
me telling of their personal ailments
is to see their doctor, because these-
ailments
heseailments are not in the line of Public
Health work, My purpose is especi-
ally to keep people well, and to this
end I' shall be glad to answer any
questions that may help anyone to
remain in good health and preserve
their full vigor and activity, and I
shall try to give full publicity to those
principles of hygiene that tend to
Maintain health and happiness and

Real Rest Depends Largely Upon
the Depth of Your Sleep
A warning to "light" or "poor" sleepers
The deeper and sounder you sleep the better
you feel. Five hours sound refreshing sleep does
you more actual good than ten hours restless,
disturbed sleep.
This is because the final conversion of food
into vital tissue and nerve cells goes on more
rapidly when the physical and mental forces are
at rest.
You can't get sound, refreshing sleep if your
nerves are agitated with tea or coffee. Both these
drinks contain caffeine, which is sometimes very
irritating to the brain and nervous system,
If you want to know the joy, vigor and
stamina that comes to the person who gets sound,
healthful sleep, why not stop taking tea or coffee
for a while, and drink delicious, invigorating
Postusn instead.
Thousands of people everywhere have found
that this was the only thing they needed in order
to bring about these very happy results.

,Soldiers Learned Value of
Forests.
The remarkable increase in the in-
terest which Canadians' are taking in
their forests is attributed by some to
the fact that members of the Canadian
Expeditionary force in the war came
home with a new ooneeption of how
Vital forests are to any state, both in
peace and war, and also hew large a
proportion of land in countries of
dense population is dovotott to forest
culture, This is doubtless one reason,
anti the ruse in the cost of forest pro-
ducts of all kinds has also been a con-
tributing factor. Perhaps the chief
reason has been the realization by
both civil'lans and soldiers of the folly,
amounting to criminality, of allowing
a great natural resource to be destroy-
