with Associ'ated First National Pictures,
Inc., under the policy of that distributing
organization of permitting uncontrolled
production on the part of stars ind pro-
ducere.
Chaplin whipped his idyll into shape
and started work upon the production of
the story It took him a year to coin-
plete. Aere are but five characters of im-
portancein it and are characterized as
The Man, The Woman, The Kid, The
Tramp, Iind the Policeman. The corn-
edian himself plays the part of the Tramp.
with a real find as a juvenile actor, Jackie
Cwgan, has the title role; and Edna Par-
vianbe plays the part of The Womem
The Woman abandonq 1er baby by
leaving it in a limousine car. Thieves
steal the car and toss the baby into an aoh
pile. where it is found wailing by The
Tramp. The Tramp raises it throttabout
babyltilod and into tarly childhood. The
Woman has =6 a success on the operatic
stage and devotes her fWtune; to aiditig
children of the slum. Thus she comes to
know Wit the Tramp and the Kid with-
out suspecting the latter's indentity.
When it is discovered that Charlie is
not the Kid's father the authorities auk
to separate them, but the Tramp has
spent his life evading -authority and does
it again. The Woman discovers that the
Kid is her abandoned baby and the picto
ure draws to a happy close. '
