LT. HAMMOND'S FUNERAL
E Impreosive Service Held At Port
Huron
Mr. and Mrs, W. B, Wellwood were in
Fort Huron, Mich., on Sunday attending i
the funeral of Mrs. Wellwood's brother, I
Lieut. Chas. A. Hammond, after sleeping
three years on the fields of Flanders,
The funeral was one of the most im-
pressive ceremonies ever held. The body,
lay in state at the city hall of his home
town and two soldiers kept silent watch
ever the dead war hero for two days.
The hall is three miles distant from the
cemetery and during the funeral proces-
siou the entire distance was a living mass
of soldiers, civiliansand friends. Thous-
ands were there who had watched him
march,away, tall, erect, handsome and
brave every inch a soldier, while the bands
%so- played and cheers echoed. They were'all
kere now to see their hero laid to rest,
yes but in a difterent attitude. The oc-
casion was made a memorial to all depart-
ed heroes.
Following the service at the city ball a
hdge military and civic procession was
formed and escorted the casket draped in
4*10 the stars and stripes and mounted on a
i gun carriage drawn by six black horses
furnished by the Kern's products company

Died Following Child Birth
The death occurred in Meaford on
Tuesday evening, - July 12th, following
child birth, of Marjorie Sewell, beloved
wife of Mr. E. Leonard Robinson of
Wingham, in her 24th year. Deceased
was well known in Walkerton, having at
one time been employed, on the staff of
the Merchants' Bank here. Her bereaved
husband also served on the Canadian
Bank of Commerce staff here, and on the
mobilization of the 160th battalion enlist-
ed here for overseas service. The funeral
took place from the home of her parents
on Friday afternoon last to the Meaford
cemetery. —Walkerton Times,
Farmer Attacked by Hog
Joseph Grubb, a farmer, residing on
the Elora road north of N1 ildmay, was Vic-
iously attacked in the barn yard as he was
doing some chores by a big, powerful
Tamwortb bog, and badly injured
The animal came from behind and bit
Mr. Grubb on the leg above the knee, in-
flicting a long gash, so deep that the
artery was severed and the blood rushed
from the wound in a stream.
The wound was bound up and the
patient rushed to the office of a local
physician. It took nine stitches to close
the wound.
Cut Out The Credit
We have heard a lot of comakent about
the amount of money Palmer's Amuse-
ment Arena and the Chautauqua and
other things take out of town. We have
heard it said that some spent their money I
who will need it next winteror some other
time. This is all true and we cannot
change the world or the people in it.
There will always be a class of people who
spend as they earn and let to -morrow
take care of itself. The only remedy we
can suggest for this lies with the merchant
who has it in his power to refuse credit.
If he refuses to exerc6e_ this power, then
he should take his loss. It is our credit
system that makes the careless more care-
less. Thrift is only brought home when
want steps in at the door. No man has
a right to give credit when he feels that
he will not receive his pay. In fact credit
is tne one thing that keeps us all in want,
