PrIVAte O'Day, of tile Tenth, had
ehown plink in several fights with the
Milano, and, tberefore, stood Well
with hie officers. 11e wee a man Wile
always had a song In his heart Or a
jolt° on bis lips, and he was, there-
fore, a favorite with his fellow pri-
vates, Now and then he got tight, but
unless the officer of the day was
obliged to take official notice nothing
Was heard from it Now and then he
wag guilty of ether breaches of disci-
pline, but he argued his case so well
before the colonel that he was let oft
with a reprimand where another would
have been sent to the guardhouse. In
every soldier company there is always
one such man -a good tighter when
• fighting is to be done, but irresponsi-
ble, good natured and totally -careless
wheu in barracks.
A funny thing happened one day. It
was funny even to Private O'Day, as
he tried his best to look at it in a
serious light. Ile fell in love with
Kitty Cline, tbe niajor's daughter. He
fell in love with her at a distance -
clear across the parade ground at Fort
Sherman. She bad been at the fort
for three or four weeks, but that was
his first sight of her, Sbe was eight-
een and,O'Day was thirty; she was a
major's daugliter, used to a • life of
luxury, while he was a bigli private
on 313 per mouth. The social golf
between them was as wide as the At-
hletic ocean, and O'Day knew it, and
whispered in his own ear: :
J
der the shelter of a ledge, heard a
sound no man forgets fitter hearing it
once. The big b1tI u1Id, witb
tens of thousan1s. of li..rrela of wate'r,
had hit the peak of the umuntelu
buret, and the jar end rear 'of It was
followed by the awlshing and mash-
ing of a torrent coming down the Can.
yen, The soldier had sprung for Ids
hone to mount and away wben he
heard the clatter of the pony's hoofs,
and next moment the animal slipped
and fen at his feet and gotta,. its •rider
over its bead. O'Day saw that It was
a .gIrl, but wIthbut knowing her ideu.
tity be.pleked her up as gip* lay In an
unconscious state, placed her on the
saddle before him and made the race.
The waters were throwing spray clear
over him as he debouelied from the
eanyon's mouth and wheeled to the
left.
"My man," said the major to hini
that afternoon after calling' him to
headquarters, 9 want to snake hands
with you and call you a brave man
and tell you bow grateful I am.. You

Svhich cleverly burlesqued his metheds
