CLINTON, ONTARIO, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 8th 1903.
RECEPTION- DAYS,
Mrs. Henry Beattie will receive on
Thursday afternoon and eveaing and
Friday afternoonof this week at her
borne, Isaac street, and afterwards on
the smond and fourth Thursday,
wizr, DANCE ON illIANKSGIVING,
A ball will be given in the town
hall on the evening of Thursday next,
Thanksgiving night, when a large at-
tendance is expected. Music will be
furnished by the London harpers and
the affair promises to be, like its
predecessors; very pleasant, ,
RUNNING THE LINES,
The C. P. R. surveyors have been
forthe past week running, their lines
DVC r the northern route of the pro-
posed extension which will cross the
Maitland just south of Auburn, The
good people of that pretty village are
much coucerned about the matter and
well they may be for _Auburn will be-
eome a place of no inconsiderable
importaance if the northern route is
selected.
ANOTHER HOTEL.
Mr: S. S. Cooper has bought the
Clarendon site and says be will build
an' hotel forthwith, indeed, he Ilea
named an early date for its coal -
elation.
It is understood that he has a
standing offer for• its rental. .
It has been repotted that the Dins -
ley corner will probably change hands
for the same purpose, but it is scar-
cely likely that two. new hotels will
be built in the natty. future. It will
be the early bird, etc, .
If a new b.otel is built and a
li-
ccnse granted it necessarily follows
that one of the houses at .present
'licensed will be cut off. Which one ?
MEETING OF TOWN COUNCIL,
Messrs. Russel Manning and Alex.
Armstrcmg appeared before the town,
coupeil at 1VIon1ay night's meeting as
representatives- of Wesley church and
asked that a crossing be laicl op-
posite the , chusch on Victoria str-
eet.: Mr.. Manning put tlie • case
very platsibly, backing his arguments
With figures which went to show that
Wesley church would not alone be
cenvenieaced by the proposed crossing.
Ands then, added Mr. Manning, north -
end Church -goers need- no longer be
offended by livery stable odors as
they wend their way to divine worL
ship.
Mayor' .Taelcson thought that when
the ' new walks were completed Wesley
elnirch would be well. served. He slid
not. favor the Crossings:
Councillor Ford said : There's • now
neither time acir cement. • •
• Councillor Stevenson spoke in his
dual capacity as a member of ' the
council and of Wesley church and inov-
ed that -the crossings asked kir • be
granted.
Combe as chairman of
the finaimi..".':eoinniittee said : The street
appropriation is exhausted. We have
no fends to go • ahead with any More
Work than was mapped cmt some, time
since. . •
•
Councillor Homier : I don't belieVe.
in hedging on this or any other ques-
tion. do not -think We' would be
justified in building ' the crossings
asked for. I am not in. favor of the
request of Messrs. IVIatiniag and 'Aim -
Councillor Stev,eitson's motion riot
receiving a Seconderthe matter was
drOpped. . • •
, Mr, Joe Rattenbutylaid a grievance
beforethe council and requested their
advice • as to the Lest way in width to
remedy if. In his garden 7. on Ontario
street lays stagnant water which Shoat- .
Id pass down the Mary street drain,
but wont. .Toe can't see how heten
get rid Of it unless the council re-
moves obstructions' hi the aforesaid
drain and this he very inildlY intimat-
ed they, should do.
The matter' is nowengaging their
serious consideration.'
Mr. Joe Proctor, had a- grievance
too. He told the council that S.
Coopet's teamsters had brken in
tile drain which he had laid across
&street in order to drain the cellar
of one.of his houses. Mt. Cooper had
filled thehole with brolven brick and
now Mr. Proctor's cellar is flooded
and the tenant threatens to leave.
When renionstrated With Mr. Cooper
said he'd be confounded, or words to
that effect, if he would replete the
tile, Now, gentlemen, said Mr. Pro&
tor, Ian a peaceable man and -for
sweet harmony's sake I'll put in an-
other tile myself if you will order
Mr, Cooper to dig out those brielts
and see tliat he does it. The couneil
undertook to do so,
Mr. 0, S. Doan billed the council
for tett dollars for daniages Mused to
the stock in his hide house which
was twice flooded by overflows from
the Mary street dram.
-This drain is a hoary -headed sub-
ject which the average councillor
would sooner walk around a. blocla
than Meet. For years time and mon-
ey have beet', spent upon it ra Aid yet
it is in a scarcely • more satisfactory
state titan a donde since, Only a few
weeks , ago a pottion of it was tiled,
Vet the recent rain fall proved that
the pipels too; small, so it will have
to be taken out.
Mr. 8, G. Plummet, who hag a, Mote
practical knowledge of the drain than
any member, of the present council,
took part in the disetession.
