They were first constructed by the
Christians of the second century.
During the third and •the early part
of the fourth century a great many
interments were made. The number
of interments made during that per-
iod Was estimated at between six and
• seven million. Towards the end of
the fourth century the eustont of
burying the dead in these vaults had
almost wholly tiled out.
Soon these catacombs became the
resort of numerous 'bands of pilgrims
who visited them. for religious epur-
poses. In them Were performed the
saered rites of the church. Many
persecuted bishops and other Chris-
tians lied. thither for protection front
their pursuers. I:Weems began the
work of restoring the engravings and
renewing the epitaphs over the gra-
ves.
But the barbarian invaders of the
sixth, and the seventh century alrnost
totally destroyed the beautiful decor -
ethane of these ancient vaults.
After this work of destruction fol-
lowed a len period of neglect in
which the catacombs were allowed to
fall into ruin, and consequently the
visits of the pilgrhns soon ceased.
The catacombs were 30011 forgotten
by all and when, about the middle of
the fifteenth century, they were acci-
dentally discovered by soave labouring
teen, the inhabitants of Rame were
greatly amazed.
After this discovery- a book was
written and published containing a
true discription, rudely illustrated,of
these ,hitherto unknown vaults. Thia
volume was -revised 'and corrected a
little later but the best scientific de-
scription and explanation of these
excavations was given in the two vol-
umes published in .the early part of
the nineteenth 'century.
