Soon afterwards the idea of making good the loss was conceived in the minds of some of the neighbors. whose noble efforts were brought to a successful culmination a couple of weeks ago, when a fine bovine was driven into Mr. McIntosh's premises, to replace the one that had died. A fine hearse has been turned out of the Ewan Carriage factory for Mr. Hamilton, Undertaker. Miss Gladys Stinson is home from Har- riston High School where she successfully passed her examinations. Mrs. Frank Clegg had the misfortune to fall while going into the cellar and sustaiued a severely sprained ankle. FORDWICH We are sorry to report that S. G. Gregg is indisposed. W. F. Wade who spent some weeks in Fort William is back home again. John Flemming and wife of Manitoba are visiting in Fordwich and Vicinity. Miss Flossie Hunter and Aggie Brown of the 9th con. are spending a few weeks in Ohio. Dr. Hutchison, of Grafton, was the guest of his brother A. C. Hutchison for a few days last week. BLUEVALE The farmers are busy doing statute labor. Magnus Spence's condition is reported very serious. Duff & Stewart have their saw mill about completed. Several attended the excursion to Guelph last week and had a pleasant time. The Womans Institute held very suc- cessful meetings on Saturday of last week. The speakers Mrs. Ashley, and Mrs. Woelard gave splendid addresses. Mrs. McAllister, mother of Mrs. James Messer, died at the home of James Mes- ser, where she lived since her husband died, on Monday last, and is to be buried at Wingham yesterday afternoon. She was in her 90th year. BRUSSELS Don't forget the Orange Celebration on the 12th July. Mrs. Brownlee, of Montreal, daughter of Postmarter Farrow, is home on a visit. Miss Dora Smith took charge of the Entrance Examination at Blyth last week. Rev. W. A. Hunter, of Dowaco, N. J., is here from College on a months vacation. Mr. and Mrs. Duncan have moved to Clinton where he has purchased a barber shop. We wish him success. Wm. Wilton has quite a sore foot, the result of steping on a rusty nail. We hope to see him around again soon. Miss Mary E. Dennis a former popular young lady of Brussels was married last Wednesday in Chatham, to Charles M. Wrensall manager of the Merchants Bank of Tilbury. WINGHAM A. J. Nicholls has returned from Man- itoba. John Elder is in New Ontario, spending a couple of weeks. Mrs. W. H. Gurney and child are away on a visit to Acton. Mrs. (Dr.) Price has arrived home from a visit to Orangeville. Rev. W. G. Houson and family removed last week to Wallaceburg. The Furniture Factories of Wingham are closing down for a few weeks. Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Field left on Tues- day, on a trip to the Western Coast. Mr. D. Halstead, who has been on the sick list for quite awhile is not any better. Rev. Dr. Rutledge has arrived in Wing - ham to fill the pastorate of the Methodist Church. The Sunday School of Westfield held a picnic in J. Wrightman's grove last Saturday. The wind -mill at the Brunswick Hotel has been taken down and the water works system put in the house. The marriage of Miss Agnes F. Graham to Mr Bryson Cochrane, marble dealer, took place at the residence of the brides mother last Wednesday. Rev. C. E. Jeakins performed the ceremony. How scarce good hardwood is getting to be in this province is indicated by an item in the Toronto papers. The Toronto Shipyards Company needed for some purpose an oak plank twenty feet long and two feet wide. The Company had to send to Indiana to get the plank. and when it was laid down to Toronto it was worth twenty dollars. Canada cannot have a reforestation policy any too soon. GLE NANAN Mr. Love, of Toronto, addressed the Ladies Congregation on Sabbath in behalf of the Children's Fresh Air Mission, and the people were pleased with his address. The Ladies Congregation intend giving their annual Garden Party on Tuesday. the 8th, July, at the residence of Mr. David Eadie, near the church. The Wingham Citizens Band and Wroxeter Quartette, have been engaged to render the musical part of the programme. Tea will be served from 6, to 9, p.m. and re- freshments will be served during the evening. Everybody welcome. BELMORE Annie Law has been on the siek list. BORN—In Belmore, on Monday, June 28th, to Mr. and Mrs. George Edwards, a son. Mrs Henderson and daughter, of Sea - forth, visited with Thos. Inglis, Carrick, last week. Miss Irwin, of Wroxeter, spent last week with relatives and friends about Belmore. Thos. Ingles, Carrick, attended the funeral of his brother, Dr. Ingles, the past week. Rev. Radford took a business trip to Bluevale in connection with Presbytery work on Monday. Douglas Edgerton and family, who have been living in New York City, are visiting at Mrs. Lawrence's. Miss Hamilton who went to Port Huron a few weeks ago is home for a few days. She expecte to return this week. Mrs. Love, Treasurer of the Toronto Children's Fresh Air Mission, spoke in the Presbyterian church on Sunday even- ing last, on behalf of that work. Several have expressed themselves willing to take two children for two weeks and give them an idea of farm life in summer. Quite a large gathering assembled at Thos. Ingles, Carrick, on Thursday, for the annual meeting of South Bruce Farmer's Institute and also the annual meeting of the Women's Institute. T. G. Raynor, Seed Dept. of Agricul- ture, Ottawa, was present and gave an interesting and instructive address along the line of Seed "Improvement and Eradication of Weeds. Lunch was served and a very pleasant time spent. Inhuman Mother Gets Seven Years Ottawa, June 28.—Mrs. Nelson Lajoie- of Aylmer, was found guilty to -day of in- human abuse of her little girl, nine years old, and was sentenced to seven years in the penitentiary. The main facts of the case were reported at the time of the ar- rest. It appears that the child was systematically abused and all but starved. and bound to a chair and denied food while the family ate their meals, and so frequently beaten that no less than 70 scars were upon her head when examined by the physicians. Mrs. Lajoie bad no council and made practically no defence. She is the mother of nine children, the youngest, a babe of eight months, being with her in court. SHARP GETS 25 YEARS.
