Field after field has lost its sad look from winter and is now worked and is smooth and "warm" looking. A rich brown colour and the fields are awaiting a warm rain to encourage growth. We send our congratulations to Sarah Mitchell on the honour of being chosen to receive the 2018 Celebration of Youth Personal Achievement Award from the Goderich Huron YMCA, sponsored by the Huron Women's Shelter Second Stage Housing and Counselling Services. She has faced adversity during her recovery from a motor vehicle accident in 2015, which affected her ability to attend classes, to learn in the same environment as fellow students and to be able to participate in sports. She has not let her battle hinder her high school career as she used a tutor and a speech language pathologist to help her maintain her studies and marks to graduate. Sarah is also an avid volunteer giving back to the community by volunteering for the Brussels Lions Club, Canadian Blood Services and Canskate. Sarah was also recognized as a Model Inclusion Student on the Leadership committee. Congratulations to Sarah, who is the daughter of Neil and Marie Mitchell. Congratulations to grandma Sharon Dalton. She is happy about the arrival of Emiline, daughter of Adam and Kelly Ann Keyes. Congratulations to the first-time parents! Justin Shortreed has earned an honour this past week. He was representing Fanshawe College in the Trades Ontario competition in Toronto. He placed second for his constructed dog house and received a substantial prize for his efforts. Justin is the son of Jim and Val Shortreed. Our condolences are extended to the Griffith and Blake families on the passing of Veronica (nee Blake) Griffith. She will be missed by her husband Guy and family Peter, Paul, David, Greg, Veronica and Edward and their families. Veronica was raised in the Brussels area and moved to Montreal following her marriage. Our sympathies to David and Karen Griffith and family and the extended Blake relatives. Happy Mother's Day to all. I hope many mothers out there had a chance to enjoy time with family or do something special with them. On the farm, most men were busy working, so it was business as usual. I spent time with my mother at the nursing home and it was a busy place. We managed to have a quick supper with two of our children and Rick, and then back to planting for them. The new backstop has been installed at the Walton ball diamond. Thanks to the work of Fortress Fencing and Scott McDonald, things are shaping up. A little more ground work and everything will be good as new. Our sympathies are extended to Bruce and Michelle Blake and family on the passing of son, Mitch. Our thoughts and prayers are with them at this time of sadness. He will be missed by brother Brandon and sister Bridget and the extended Blake and McCutcheon families Mitch will be remembered as quite a character, but was always polite and friendly when met on the street. Our condolences to all. Celebrating birthdays this past week are Brandon Dalton, Jim Shortreed, Maddy Bernard, Jordan Thompson, Carman Bernard, Calvin Flood, Nathan Wharton, Gavin Bowers, Jim Cook, Tracey Lee, Shane Ryan, Andrea Shortreed, Jim Coleman, Jeff Grobbink, Jennifer McClure Van Driel, Cathy Melady, Grace Linton, Brycen Warwick, Joyce Williamson, Jason Pennington and Ryan Butler. (Photo submitted) Daycare issue closed for now By Shawn Loughlin The Citizen Barring any partnership or purchase offers coming out the woodwork, Huron East Council is putting the issue of the Vanastra Early Childhood Learning Centre to rest at least for this term of council. After weeks of discussion surrounding rising costs at the centre and councillors wanting further review of its deficit, operations and viability to the municipality, council has decided that, with an election on the horizon, it was time to end the debate. Councillor Nathan Marshall said that all of council agreed that they Each year a committee chooses an outstanding citizen weren't going to close or make drastic changes to the daycare in the next six months ahead of the municipal election, so it only made sense to pass a decision on to the next council this winter. With the budget passed, Marshall said that the daycare would be operating as is at least for the rest of 2018, meaning that it should be a decision for the next sitting of council after the municipal election in October. In addition to the municipal election, in speaking with Social Services Manager Michelle Gaynor, Deputy -Mayor Joe Steffler was told that it might be too early to discuss the issue at a county level as well with a provincial election looming. Deputy -Clerk Caitlin Gillis was also due to speak to Kim Murray, a parent volunteer on the Seaforth Co- operative Board of Directors about the establishment's potential interest in the facility, although she had nothing to report yet. Mayor Bernie MacLellan said that council should definitely keep its ears open about potential offers or interest, especially with the local YMCA, which had been mentioned as a potential partner. However, for the time being, he said it made sense for things to be on hold with both elections on the horizon. Council received Knight's report for information. local heroes 33rd Annual Citizen of the Year Award Nominations Open There are so many people out there who do so much to improve their community.
