Good finds
The Blyth Festival and its loyal legion of volunteers were busy last week hosting the annual
used book sale earlier than usual. Lisa Harper of the Festival set a goal of $10,000 for the sale,
its most ambitious goal yet. In addition to the thousands of books up for grabs, several
volunteers were busy all week in the Memorial Hall kitchen baking dozens of pies for the other
half of the annual fundraiser. The event had a successful opening night, being held the same
night as the Michael Landsberg engagement organized by the Tanner Steffler Foundation and
the opening night of the annual Student Art Show at the Blyth Festival Art Gallery. (Shawn

HE cuts hydro, but
sees natural gas rise
By Shawn Loughlin
The Citizen
Huron East's electricity usage and
costs are down across the board, but
its natural gas consumption is on the
rise.
Chief Administrative Officer Brad
Knight presented the municipality's
annual energy report for 2017 to
council at its May 1 meeting. He told
council that net electricity costs have
decreased by 10 per cent ($65,750)
and usage has declined by three per
cent. Natural gas consumption,
however, has risen five per cent and
costs have increased by 16 per cent.
Knight told councillors that
because the municipality buys its
electricity through a retailer,
Ontario's Fair Hydro Plan,
implemented by the provincial
government last summer, had no
impact on Huron East. The plan
reduced residential hydro bills by
approximately 25 per cent, but
because of Huron East's
arrangement, it did not affect the
municipality's rate.
The change, however, did affect
Huron East's global adjustment.
The two big factors impacting the
municipality's natural gas bill,
Knight said, were when the
Association of Municipalities of
Ontario (AMO) announced a price
decrease of two cents per metre
cubed and when Union Gas
increased its delivery charge by 3.3
cents per metre cubed due to the
impacts of cap and trade.
In terms of the municipality's
administration, after a slight increase
in hydro costs last year, net energy
costs at town hall went down 22 per
cent compared to 2016 costs.
Streetlighting in the municipality
has also seen its hydro usage go
down as a result of the LED
conversion in most wards.
Knight told councillors that since
the municipality began tracking its
electricity usage in 2010, Huron East
consistently used over 4 million
kilowatt hours of electricity per year.
However, consumption has
continued to decline year after year
and Huron East is down to 3.4
million kilowatt hours in 2017.
He said the most significant
change that has occurred in that time
has been the LED conversion of
municipal streetlights that has
drastically reduced consumption.
