local spaces.
Part of the success of the group,
Edgar said, is that members take
responsibility for the village's
greenspaces, sometimes in a very
broad sense and other times in a very
specific sense.
She pointed to the entry sign and
associated gardens at the south end
of the village as being maintained by
one member who also planted a
Canadian flag in that garden to mark
Canada's 150th.
Healthier homes
need light, some
clutter control
MS — Home renovation projects
are done for several different
reasons, whether to update styles,
repair damaged or broken items or
to achieve more living space. More
than ever before, homeowners are
choosing improvement projects
geared toward making their homes
healthier.
Establishing a healthy home
means different things to different
people. For example, to an
environmentalist, a healthy home
may incorporate eco -friendly or
green products. To those with young
children or mobility -impaired
seniors, a healthy home may be one
free from potential hazards. Others
may view a healthy home as one
that alleviates allergies.
The World Health Organizations
says inadequate housing conditions,
such as poor ventilation, radon,
urban pollution and moisture issues
can all contribute to many
preventable diseases and injuries -
especially respiratory problems,
nervous system disorders,
cardiovascular diseases, and cancer.
Furthermore, the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA) ranks indoor air quality as a
top five environmental risk to public
health. EPA studies have found that
indoor air pollution levels were
roughly two to five times greater
than outdoor pollution levels.
People interested in making their
homes healthier can embrace these

The group runs mostly through
fundraising and, last year, had
several very successful initiatives
that will allow them to pursue the
projects associated with the
revitalization of the park.
The group acquired the rights to a
newly -developed daylily named the
Belle of Blyth according to member
Sharlene Young -Bolen.
The daylily is now registered,
meaning that whenever one is
purchased, it further supports the
organization. To date, the group has
raised $1,000 through sales.
A member also created a quilt that
was the grand prize in a raffle held
by the organization last summer.
Other prizes included locally -
created art and items from local
shops.
As for the future, the group plans
eaut e
to create a calendar featuring the
vistas of Blyth to further fund the
organization.
Young -Bolen pointed to social
media, especially Facebook, as a
vehicle for broadcasting the group's
presence and activities and
encouraged anyone interested to
search for the group there for more
information.
The Friends of the Village are also
active on several other social media
sites including Twitter and
Instagram.
