Weather a hot topic with road closures, outages

The news of the past week is of
course the weather. There were a few
nice days and then Friday everything
went crazy. The gale force winds
took down plenty of trees, branches,
hydro lines, shingles off roofs and
anything that wasn't tied down.
There were lots of roads closed and
many buses had to take alternate
routes because of trees or hydro lines
blocking the route of travel. I was
fortunate to not have any difficulties,
but it was more of a challenge
driving and coping with the strong
winds pushing hard on the bus.
Then there is the cleanup
following the wind storm. We
thought we had the yard cleaned up
but lots of branches and pine cones
by the hundred, scattered across the
lawn again. We are fortunate we had
no other damage, because many
down Moncrieff Road did. A tree
came down at our son's place,
narrowly missing the house, a tree
was down at Chris Stevenson's, and
shingles came off at Jim
McDonald's, John Van Vliet's and
Murray Houston's.
The few nice days last week had
the farmers out in full force on the
land, cultivating, spraying and lots
of manure being spread. I did hear of
a few guys who planted corn and
spring grain, but the majority are still
working and preparing the land for
planting. A couple of days to rest
when the rain hit, but by the
weekend, they were back at it. There
is an anticipated run of good weather
forecasted for the week, so by the
time the paper is out, many fields
will be worked, sprayed and planted.
Be wary and watch for the large
slower moving machinery on our
roads. I guess we can say spring is
here!
Our sympathies are extended to
the family of Major Frank Golding,
retired Royal Canadian Air Force, on
his passing. He will be missed by his
wife Janie and daughter Elizabeth
and her family Denny, Tory, Marissa
and Ethan.
Major Golding was a wonderful
man, who I enjoyed many a chat
with over the last few years. He had
lived a full and interesting life,
reaching the age of 95. He was the
Clinton Airbase Commander until its
closure and had enjoyed a 42 -year
military career. He was the guest
speaker at the Freedom Syrup year-
end dedication in 2016 and was a
strong speaker and supporter of the
Fallen Soldiers Fund for Families
that Freedom Syrup supports.
Major Golding was the
grandfather of Denny Scott of The
Citizen and was very proud of his
grandson's writing. He even enjoyed
reading mine. A true example of an
officer and a gentleman, he will be
missed by all. Our condolences to
all.
Returning from a short trip are
Harvey and Betty Shaw and their
daughter Linda. The trio travelled to
Ottawa by train to visit with
grandson and son Brady. They took
the train from Stratford for the long
ride, but found it very exciting. They
were away from Friday until
Monday and stayed at a hotel in
downtown Ottawa. They went to the
Parliament buildings and were
amazed at how large they are. They
saw some of the other sights in
downtown Ottawa, but report it was
very cold.
Brady is doing well and is working
and going to school there and was
very happy to see his family for the
weekend.
The Winthrop ladies group
gathered on Tuesday morning with
only three ladies enjoying breakfast
and a visit. It must be spring and the
others were busy. The ladies that did
enjoy the visit were Judy
Beuermann, Yolanda Gubelmann
and Jennifer Vellinga.
A local young lady and her dance
group had a successful weekend
away in Niagara Falls. They were
attending the dance competition

the business. The minutes of the last
meeting were read and approved.
The WMS and Guild treasurer's
reports were given.
Thank you cards for the funeral
lunches were read from the Marks
and Bishop families. The roll call,
"How are you celebrating Easter?"
was answered by the members.
Leona Armstrong and Margaret
Mclnroy were scheduled to attend
the WMS spring planning meeting
in Wingham on Wednesday, March
28. Melville was responsible for the
Lenten service lunch on Wednesday,
March 28 at the United Church.
Members were reminded of the
springtime supper, Sunday, April 29
and the harvest supper on Sunday,
Nov. 11.
Molesworth WMS has invited
Melville to join them to learn about
"Faith's Orphans" in Zambia on
Wednesday, May 30 at 7:30 p.m.
Due to this invitation the group
changed its planned meeting with
the ladies of St. Andrew's
Molesworth to Tuesday, April 24 at
6:30 p.m. Melville members are
providing the meal. Yvonne Coultes,
Belgrave, will be speaking on her
work with Shelter Canada that
evening.
Melville is planning on having
"Mission Awareness Sunday" on the
first or second Sunday in June.
The meeting was adjourned and
lunch of hot cross buns, cheese and
crackers was enjoyed.
The February meeting of the
Melville Guild and Women's
Missionary Society was held on
Tuesday, Feb. 20 at 1:30 p.m. at the
home of Dona Knight.
Dona Knight led in prayer,
especially remembering those in our
church family who have lost loved
ones recently. Treasurer Alice Marks
and her family, on the recent loss of
her husband Dave Marks, and the
Bishop family on the recent loss of
Clarence.
Margaret read "Love — Hope
Reflected" by Hope Reidt. It instills
upon us how we love on a human
level is shown through God's great
love for us.
Dona then read John 15 where we
find "My command is this: Love
each other as I have loved you."
Minutes of the January meeting
were read and approved as read.
Leona Armstrong gave the WMS
treasurer's report. Collection was
taken up for the WMS and the card
fund.
It was reported that the Maitland
WMS annual meeting was held on
Wednesday, Jan. 31 at Wingham
Presbyterian Church. Thanks to Rev.
Ireland who prepared and led the
worship service and to Elaine
Armstrong, Leona Armstrong, Mary
Douma, and Margaret Mclnroy for
taking part in the special event.
Members questioned if the group
should raise its 2018 fees. Since they
have already been submitted they
decided to consider it next year.
Elaine Armstrong is going to
represent Melville at Synodical in
Hamilton April 17 and 18. The
theme is "Sharing Your Vision".
Dona reported that the arena has
been booked for the Springtime
Supper on Sunday, April 29 and the
tickets are being printed. The ladies
of St. Andrew's, Molesworth are to
be invited to the group's May 15
meeting.
It will begin with supper, followed
by a speaker on their work with
Shelter Canada.

highest mark of the competition.
Monica McNichol is part of the
Powerhouse Dance School of
Clinton. Monica and group was
cheered on by mom Lynn and sister
Abby. Monica is the daughter of Dan
McNichol and Lynn McNichol.
Congratulations to Monica who was
sporting her championship ribbon on
her coat on Monday.
The McDonald and Dick families
gathered on Saturday to celebrate
Wes McDonald's third birthday. The
15 or so enjoyed sitting out enjoying
the sun and the wind during the
afternoon. The kids had fun bursting
a pinata and gathering up the candy,
and running and playing outside
before eating.
Neil McDonald has returned to
Vancouver after a three-week stay.
Lots of cleanup around his property
and folks to visit with while here.
Normally he assists with some
farm work, but the weather had
different ideas this year. Just one
morning of cultivating was managed
before rain again. He had to miss the
birthday party and the funeral for
cousin Roger as his flight was
scheduled for Saturday. He reports
an abundance of traffic on the way to
Toronto and was only in the
boarding lounge about 10 minutes.
Celebrating birthdays this past
week includes Justin Bernard,
Andrea Humphries, Eaden Linton,
Joe Ryan, Wes McDonald, Veronica
Grobbink, Emma Robinson, Pat
Melady, Armand Roth, Gerry
Sullivan, Brian Workman, Scott
McNaughton, Doug O'Neill, Adam
Jarosz, Scott Baan, Brandon Blake,
Colin Humphries and Kyle
Stevenson. Happy birthday to all.
