National Nursing Week 2018 May7-13 The week draws attention to nurses, increasing the awareness of the public, policy -makers and governments of the many contributions of nursing to the well-being of Canadians. Join us in thanking dedicated nurses for going above and beyond to make a difference in the lives of patients and their families. Their commitment to caring makes our community and our world a better place! By Denny Scott - The Citizen For Bluevale resident Mady Deitner, being a nurse has been an ambition since public school and one she loves. Deitner is a full-time Registered Nurse at Wingham and District Hospital. She also occasionally works at Listowel Memorial Hospital. She primarily works in the Medicine Unit, which means anyone who spends time in the hospital could run into her, day or night. "We handle everyone from infants to the elderly, but we mostly see young adults to the elderly," she said. Her daily jobs change a little depending on whether she's in the ward or floating between it and the emergency room but, for the majority of her time, she's the first person her patients see in the morning and the last person they see before they go to bed. "We work 12 -hour shifts," she said. "So I'm either in there at 7 a.m. when the patients are waking up and I'm starting my shift, or they are waking up when my shift is ending if I'm on nights" She said a day shift involves getting reports Lisa Thompson M.P.P. NATIONAL NURSING WEEK 2018 MAY 7-13 LoweMartin Imgroup. corn about the patients, meeting them, getting their medication ready for the day, doing rounds to check on patients and getting the patients ready for the day. Depending on the patient, that can mean helping them prepare for tests, physiotherapy or discharge, depending on what has them in the hospital. The rest of her time, she said, is split between catching up on tasks and helping to comfort her patients however she can. "Some days, the 12 hours can go by pretty smoothly. Sometimes we work through lunches and breaks to get everything done," she said. "Some days you're able to walk with and spend time comforting people, other days you're running 12,000 steps between things that need your attention." When she was in elementary school, Deitner was faced with the tough question of what she wanted to do when she grew up. She had it narrowed down to a nurse or a singer, and in one way or another has followed up on both passions. She admits that, while at work, she may sing a tune every now and again, and she is also part of the choir at St. Ambrose Catholic trip.adv WINGHAM MOTEL Thank you to all our nurses! Blyth - 519-523-4311 Church in Brussels. As far as her career, however, she feels she has made the right choice. "I don't see myself doing anything else," she said. "I love nursing. I love trying to make my patients' days better, helping them work on their independence when capable of doing so and trying to make someone's death as peaceful as possible, not only for the patient but the family as well." She said whether a patient is there for an afternoon or whether they are in palliative care, she wants to make sure everyone has the care they need. A big part of what makes her job something she enjoys is also the people she works with. "I love the teamwork from my fellow nurses, doctors and allied health [professionals] that is needed to help the patients," she said. "I love the constant learning and new techniques and supplies." Deitner has taken advantage of those new learning opportunities, recently becoming a CPR instructor for the hospital and also has her post -graduate certification in Cardiac Care.
