May 6 Belgrave church service moved to Dungannon PEOPLE AROUND BELGRAVE By Linda Campbell Call 357-2188 Sincere sympathy is extended from the community to Johanna (Hanny) in the loss of her husband Fred Meier Sr. and to Fred and Linda, Oscar and Mary Ann and Chris and Jane Meier and families in the loss of their father. Don and Connie Shiell greeted worshippers and handed out the bulletins on Sunday, April 29. In the absence of Ann Clark, Catherine MacDonald played the piano and the organ. Nancy Folkard welcomed the congregation and introduced the guests, Linda Willis who is chair of the Board of Directors of Change Her World and co-founder of the charity with Rev. Carol Hamilton. Linda is a retired teacher with a passion for social justice. She is an ordained elder in the Presbyterian Church in Canada. Carol is a nurse in private practice and part-time minister at Knox Presbyterian, Harrington. Gord Folkard lit the Christ candle and Nancy Folkard did a reading. "We Praise You, 0 God" was the gathering hymn and Catherine MacDonald accompanied at the piano. Florence Wightman commented on her granddaughter MacKenzie Wightman competing in the Walkerton Musical Festival on Friday night. Happy birthday was sung to Doreen Marks, whose birthday is Tuesday, May 1. After the singing of "This Is God's Wondrous World", the children went to the front pew for story time with Carol. She asked the children different questions pertaining to the beds they slept in. She had with her a sleeping mat that the people in Malawi, Africa used to sleep on a mud floor. After prayer the children adjourned to Sunday school. Linda Willis read scripture from Micah 6: 6-8 and Matthew 25: 31- 46. The sermon was entitled, "Being the Hands and Feet of Christ in the World". Carol showed a video on their trip to Malawi, Africa and Linda commented on it. Carol and Linda have helped the girls and women of Malawi with an opportunity to be educated by providing school fees, school uniforms, school supplies, literacy training, scholarships and life skills training, relief of poverty by providing food, clothing and other basic supplies. The quality of drinking water and sanitation has also been improved and health care has also been improved. The projects are located in northern Malawi, the 13th poorest region of the world. Providing a girl with nine years of quality education means she is less likely to experience violence or marry or have children while she is still a child herself. She is more likely to be literate, healthy and survive into adulthood, as are her children. She is more likely to reinvest her income back into her family community and country. She is more likely to understand her rights and be a force for change. "We are Pilgrims" was the hymn of response. Nancy Jardin reported on the Minute for Missions entitled, "Supporting People Entering Ministry". Gord Folkard, Doug Walker, Murray Vincent and Larry Harper took up the offering which was dedicated. After repeating the Lord's Prayer, the congregation sang the closing hymn, "I, the Lord of Sea and Sky" The benediction and blessing, "Go Now in Peace" concluded the morning worship service. There will be no church service in Belgrave on Sunday, May 6. There is church at Dungannon United Church at 11 a.m. to celebrate their anniversary. Congratulations to MacKenzie Wightman. At the Walkerton Music Festival Highlights Concert on Friday night she received a scholarship of $150 and another surprise. She has been named one of the Provincial Finalists and will now compete in Hamilton later this month. Great job MacKenzie! The scripture reading is not often read in changing times but it suited the service. It is the end of pastoral charge. The time has gone by so fast. No matter where life takes us, God is with us. God will shine through because for everything there is a season. The hymn "Spirit, Spirit of Gentleness" was sung.
