The growth of spring is a wonder
to see and it's available for a peek
any place you look.
The first of the daffodils are
peeking out of the warm spots in
town and the many wee bulbs that
spread all over lawns are obvious
and pretty in the blues and whites
seen. The sun and warmth are good
for the soul.
Life is full of endings and
beginnings. The end of student days
for Hillary MacDonald at the
United Churches was well marked
on Sunday. The combined
congregations gathered in Brussels
to worship, sing, mark this occasion
properly, and, of course, eat.
A full choir from the two churches
set the mood and Hillary's last
service with us noted the growth and
changes that have occurred in this
short time together. A personalized
cowboy hat and kerchief (badge and
ark included) set the tone. Proper
gifts depicting Huron County will
travel to Calgary with Hillary with
all our prayers and wishes for a good
life.
Miss Jill from Listowel spent the
weekend with us and, just like
spring, she's sprouting in mind and
body. It really is a joy to be a
grandparent. To watch and be part of
the changes that come with age, at
the many stages, is fun. No need to
worry about their laundry or messy
rooms or nutrition, just the fun of
having them in your life and sharing
stories that allow each to think the
Brussels Branch hosts district mixed darts
By Jo -Ann McDonald
The week at the Brussels Legion
Branch began with the Lions Club
holding its dinner meeting. There
were 30 members who enjoyed a
turkey dinner prior to the meeting.
Comrades Jo -Ann and Judy co-
ordinated the meal and cleanup.
The weekly meeting of the
Brussels Army Cadet Corp was held
on Tuesday evening. The Corp is
busy practising for their year-end
review to be held the end of May.
The year really flies by!
The general meeting of the Branch
was held downstairs on Tuesday
evening with eight members present.
They had a special guest from
Hanover attend to talk about the
Memorial Flag program. He was
Chris Taibinger of One Promotion.
The Branch is interested in persuing
the idea for the fall. The Memorial
Flags have pictures of veterans of
our area, that will be hung on the
posts around town during the season
of Remembrance. The flags can be
sponsored by families and there will
be more information as we delve
into the finer points of the project.
The mixed dart league was held on
Thursday evening. There were 16
darters out for the night. Winners
were: first, Deb Burch and Ron
Schmidt; second, Sharon Robbins
and Gord Jacklin; high shots, Sandra
Josling Brown, 120 and Wayne
Smith, 114. Next week is the final
night of darts until the fall.
Friday night the Catch the Ace
draw was held with the winner being
Sara Overholt, who took home $222.
The envelope drawn was #12 and
contained the six of spades, so the
ace of spades is still hiding. The
estimated jackpot for next week is
$1400. The evening had the talents
of Stubby D Karaoke on hand. A
good crowd enjoyed the wings,
nachos and the singing!
On Saturday the Branch was
overflowing with darters. The
district mixed double and team dart
event was hosted by Brussels
Branch. There were about 100
darters from across the district that
stretches from Hensall to Goderich
to Port Elgin to Wiarton to Guelph to
Stratford and many places in
between. They started to arrive by 10
a.m. and started play at 11 a.m.
following registration. There were
22 doubles teams that started the
day's play. The mixed -team
competition started after the doubles
had finished.
Playing for the Brussels Legion in
doubles was pair Ron and Daisy
Schmidt, Eric Ross and Lisa
Glanville and Jim and Sandra
Brown. They finished round-robin
play and we congratulate Eric and
Lisa on capturing first place for
district mixed doubles. They will go
on to compete at provincial
competition in Sutton in June. The
Brussels Branch had two teams
playing in the team competition. The
first team included Eric Ross, Lisa
Glanville, On team two were Jim,
Sandra and Chris Brown and Catrina
Josling. They all had a good day but
did not advance to the playoff round.
It took many Comrades to provide
bartending, meals, ticket sales and
running to get whatever was needed.
We appreciate the help from
Comrades Jo -Ann McDonald, John
Lowe, Judy Lee, Deb Cann, Joan
Smith, Monica Richardson, Deb
Ross, Kathy Burkholder, Sandra
Brown, Jim Brown, Chris Brown
and BJ Hummel.
The Sunday night dance had a nice
crowd enjoy the music of new band,
Country Roads. The band is from
London and played a nice variety of
dance music. It was a new sound for
the dancers with some oldies and
newer songs to enjoy.

other just a little weird. It often
amazes me how much in common
the different ages share.
The farmers' market this year will
be held in the Four Winds Barn.
Vendors are making plans for the
start date of May 18, so be sure to
support this community effort.
When spring arrives, social events
pop to life. Meals and music,
education and parties can all be on
your calendar if you just check.
So enjoy this time, every day is a
gift.
Bye now, Betty G.W.
