Huron East adopts new rural road -painting policy Huron East Council has voted to establish a painting policy for all of its rural roads. This motion came after Director of Public Works Barry Mills prepared a report for council and also after a presentation from a concerned resident concerning the dangerous conditions of Front Road due to the lack of a centre line. The policy dictates that Mills and his department will be authorized to paint solid centre lines on every paved rural road in the municipality. The municipality will be divided by Winthrop Road and the roads identified in the report that are south of the road will be painted in 2019 and then repainted every second year thereafter. Any roads north of the road will be painted in 2020 and then will be repainted every second year thereafter. Mills said that according to the Ontario Traffic Manual, paving marking is required on roads with more than 2,000 vehicles travelling it per day. According to current traffic counts, the highest -travelled roads in Huron East see approximately half of the required traffic. The section of Front Road that initiated the conversation, Mills said, sees the most traffic in Huron East in terms of rural roads; it sees 1,072 vehicles on it per day. Implementing the new policy, Mills said, would result in just under 104 kilometres being painted, which is 60 per cent of the municipality's 172.88 kilometres of rural roads. He said that the current cost for painting a kilometre of a rural road is $262. With approximately half of the 104 kilometres of roads due to be painted every year starting next year, the program will have an annual budget impact of between $13,000 and $14,000.
