Sing along Zoey Onn, right, is shown above leading the Brussels Singing Group during a recent evening of song at Huronlea Home for the Aged in Brussels. This marks the second time the group has performed at Huronlea. The group, under the guidance of Onn, Don Chesher and Jim Lee, held its first event in February at the Brussels, Morris and Grey Community Centre and welcomes new members who look to join in the musical fun. For more information, contact Chesher at 519-887-8473, Lee at 519-887-9181 or Onn at 519-887-6336. (Shawn Loughlin photo) Spring park clean set April 30 A NOTE FROM BETTY By Betty Graber Watson Call 887-9231 Ahhh, sunshine; that warm spring tonic that makes short work of the snow memories. The birds are now letting loose with their songs. Easter time, resurrection of life has arrived. It's everywhere, you can't help but see the new growth. Ahhh. The Huron County Museum held a neat thing for our area. From Thursday until Sunday last week, National Film Board films were shown each day, about and produced by Indigenous people. The Anglican and United Church Ministers in Goderich were pleased with the attendance and support they received from the Museum staff. For us, with our very white population, this was an opportunity to learn about the different clans that made this country productive. As immigrants, our foremothers arrived from many lands to learn many things from the Native Canadians. This is our history. We like to think that Canada is a fair place. The Truth & Reconciliation Report pulled together, after many years of abuse, revealed stories that we'd rather not hear. In order to understand anything, you need to hear about it, learn about it and then do your part. So, for an area that has limited Native Canadians in our midst, this past week was a good start to making Canada a better place. As we celebrated nearly 50 years of Earth Days on Sunday, it was heartening to think that maybe we're finally getting it. We are wrecking the earth! We buy too much stuff, we waste food and water, we use paper/plastic at gatherings and we drive places to which we could walk. Pick one for this year and make the earth safer for our grandchildren. The Brussels Ministerial played host to a themed evening "The Joy of Creation" on Sunday. Held at the Anglican Church, the five choirs each chose two numbers to share, showing the different styles and tempo of their gifts. This was a good evening, like at Christmas, to hear the different styles of music enjoyed by folks of that church. Donations were accepted for the compassion fund which is supervised by the clergy from each Church in their role at Brussels Ministerial. Check with Abi for details for spring clean-up of our parks. It's to be held on April 30. All help is appreciated, rakes and gloves would help, but hands and bodies to pick up things are also needed. It's always good to view community support in action. The Brussels Lions Breakfast was our most recent example. When people know the purpose of an event, see people willing to support the cause, know past work and see that community is central, support arrives. The lovely weather helped bring a nice crowd to enjoy the hearty breakfast and of course good company is a given. Take care of yourself. Bye now, Betty G.W. At the Branch 'Ace' jackpot climbs By Jo -Ann McDonald It has been a busy few days at the Brussels Legion Branch. The Thursday night darts had a dozen players. Winners were: first, Betty Ann Smith and Sandra Josling Brown; second, Gord Jacklin and Catrina Josling. They had a good night, but no one had any shots over 100. While the darters were busy playing downstairs, the pipe band was busy practising upstairs. The band is looking for new members to learn the pipes and the drums. If anyone out there is interested please call Don Martin or Jamie Mitchell. While the pipers were practising, the auction committee was busy setting up for the auction. Filling out the paperwork and numbering all the items, they quietly worked away at the tables. Friday, they finished up just before the opening of the silent auction and then started organizing for the next day. The Catch the Ace draw was held downstairs with President Jamie Mitchell drawing the wining name of Mike Alexander. Mike receives $236. His envelope choice was #32 and held the seven of clubs, so the ace is still hiding. The estimated jackpot for April 27 will be $1,000.Get your ticket and pick your lucky number. Saturday was busy with a steady number of folks perusing the 100 items up for grabs at the auction. There were nine choices of soup for the showcase of Sandra's Soups for a Cause. A soup and sandwich lunch was available and a nice bunch enjoyed the fare. The bake table was popular with a great choice of sweets to choose from. A great day was had and Comrades helping for the day were Sandra Josling Brown, Jo -Ann McDonald Judy Emmrich, Brenda Linton, Deb Cann, Judy Lee, Lisa Glanville and Joan Smith. Sunday is not a day of rest for all because it was a fish fry day in Vanastra. Comrades Jo -Ann and Deb organized the fish and heading to Vanastra Curling Club to cook were Greg Wilson, Andy Overholt, Jim Brown and Sandra Josling Brown, Cam Ross and Judy Lee. They cooked for approximately 250 people on a beautiful sunny day. It was much nicer than last year in Vanastra when a freak snow storm hit the group to make it a nasty day. Just a reminder that euchre is cancelled for Saturday, April 28. .4 FROM BRUSSELS Brussels Legion Friday Night Catch the Ace Draw at 7:15 pm followed by "Stubby D" Karaoke Entertainer 8 pm -12 am - food available Brussels Legion Catch the Ace Winner is April 20 Mike Alexander $236 Envelope #32-7 of Clubs Estimated Jackpot $1,000 WATCH FOR THE 2018 PHONE BOOK The Citizen's 2018 Phone Book will be delivered in the Flyer Package Thursday, April 26 to all homes in the following areas.
