Wild weather causes power outages, postponements
By Denny Scott
The Citizen
The intense ice storm that hovered
over southwestern Ontario over the
weekend contributed to vehicle
collisions, event cancellations and
hazardous driving conditions.
Hail, freezing rain, wind gusts of
over 100 kilometres per hour and, on
Monday, bouts of snow buffeted
southwestern Ontario, resulting in
more than 76,000 Ontario
households without power over the
weekend.
Hydro One reported that the ice,
snow, rain and wind resulted in
downed hydro poles, resulting in
outages.
Locally, power outages were
recorded throughout Huron County,
including Clinton, Goderich
Township, the Seaforth area and
further south throughout the county.
As of Monday, Hydro One was
reporting localized outages affecting
less than 20 properties each in areas
of North Huron, Huron East, Central
Huron and Ashfield-Colborne-
Wawanosh. Larger outages were
also still reported between Goderich,
Clinton and Bayfield and in Kintail.
FATAL COLLISION
Sunday evening, local firefighters
responded to a collision near
Bluevale that Ontario Provincial
Police (OPP) later identified as
resulting in a fatality.
The collision occurred at 6 p.m. on
Sunday on County Road 87
northeast of Bluevale. Huron County
OPP, paramedic services and the
Fire Department of North Huron
were on the scene.
The OPP's reports indicate that an
earlier collision between a vehicle
and a guardrail resulted in debris
across the road.
Douglas Stamper, a 64 -year-old
Central Huron resident, stopped at
the collision scene and exited his
vehicle to inspect it.
A pick-up truck travelling
eastbound on County Road 87
collided with Stamper. Reports
indicate Stamper had left his vehicle
and was on the roadway inspecting
the site of the previous collision. He
sustained fatal injuries from the
collision and was pronounced
deceased at the scene.
West Region OPP Technical
Collision Investigation (TCI) team
members investigated the scene, and
the road remained closed between B
Line Road and Amberley Road until
early Saturday Morning.
OPP encourage anyone with
information to contact Huron OPP at
1-888-310-1122 or 519-524-8314.
Information can also be provided to
Crime Stoppers at 1 -800 -222 -TIPS
(8477).

Honouring a former Lion
The Blyth Lions Club has donated $500 to the Dave Mounsey Memorial Fund for its Run
Around The Square this May. The charity places defibrillators in buildings across southwestern
Ontario and this year's Run Around The Square donation is being placed in honour of long-
time Blyth Fire Chief Paul Josling, who died early last year. Josling was instrumental in the
founding of the Dave Mounsey Memorial Fund and was a member of the Blyth Lions Club for
several years in the 1970s and 1980s. President Ken Stewart presented board member
Jessica Loughlin with the cheque on April 12, which was Jersey Day across Canada. Club
members honoured members of the Humboldt Broncs who died in a collision earlier this month
by wearing hockey jerseys that day. (Photo submitted)
