NH Council won't keep museum at current location
By Denny Scott
The Citizen
North Huron Township Council
has decided that, if the North Huron
Museum does continue, it won't be
at its current space.
A presentation from Director of
Recreation and Facilities Pat
Newson, with assistance from Chief
Administrative Officer Dwayne
Evans and Huron County Museum
Assistant -Curator Elizabeth French -
Gibson, questioned council
regarding its willingness to spend
$3.8 million to maintain the building
as a museum.
While there was some debate as to
whether or not the building should
remain under North Huron
ownership, council did decide that
proceeding with the $3.8 million in
renovations is not worthwhile.
The renovations include necessary
upgrades to the structure, upgrades
needed to maintain a museum and
necessary accessibility upgrades that
are mandated for every public
building by 2025.
Newson presented a flowchart
indicating that, before staff could
research further issues with the
museum programming and
structure, council needed to decide
whether the building was a priority.
If council decided to renovate the
building as a museum, future
discussions would be focused on
programming. Since council decided
not to invest in the building,
however, the next questions are more
pointed, like deciding whether the

exercise program in the community
psychiatric clinics attached to the
Schedule I facility was conducted.
Finally, there was a project looking
at patient education for long-acting
injectable medications in rural
community psychiatric clinics
attached to the Schedule I hospital.
Devereaux has also been a
successful physician recruiter at the
Alexandra Marine and General
Hospital. This has included the
successful recruitment of
psychiatrists which in the current
climate is a difficult task. She
recently was profiled on a national
CBC broadcast highlighting her
skills in recruitment.
Devereaux has worked tirelessly
promoting Alexandra Marine and
General Hospital as a desirable place
to work and at the same time
increased community awareness
of the mental health program run
by the Schedule I facility in
Goderich.
Dr. Patrick Conlon, Chief of
Psychiatry at Alexandra Marine and
General Hospital said, "I am
delighted that Gwen has won such a
prestigious award. The partnership
with Gateway has certainly
benefited AMGH and facilitated
research and education in mental
health across the county"
museum will be re -opened in a
different location and what to do
with the artifacts and archives if
council does decide to close the
museum.
Newson explained that her initial
research indicates that reallocating
the artifacts and archives would
likely take a year of staff time, but
would be a one-time expense.
Council was informed that, by
closing the building and the
museum, the municipality could see
savings of $30,000 annually, starting
in 2020.
Most councillors in attendance
said they couldn't justify the
expenditure, but didn't want to make
any further decisions until staff
could research them.
Council then passed a motion not
to invest $3.8 million in the building,
keep the museum closed and have
Newson to prepare a report outlining
next steps for artifacts, programming
and building itself.
A second motion was also passed
waiving rent for the Barn Dance
Historical Society until the future of
the museum was decided.

Students at Hullett Central Public School learned a little about the skilled trades last week
thanks to a tour by Jamie McMillan. Called a mentor to hundreds of young students, McMillan
became an ironworkers' apprentice in Hamilton and she now tours area schools to advocate
for the skilled trades in today's school system. Above, students tried on some of the trades
equipment in front of a green screen to see how it looked. From left: McKenzie Smith, Jade

CURBSIDE COLLECTION - WASTE AND RECYCLING
Effective May 1st the Township of North Huron will be implementing changes to our weekly/bi-weekly
curbside collection. These changes will result in a bi-weekly recycling collection within Wingham, Blyth,
Hutton Heights, and Belgrave. East Wawanosh residents will see no impact to their existing collection
schedule.
All of North Huron will receive curbside garbage and recycling services from Waste Management.
Should you have a missed collection please call Waste Management directly at 1-888-730-3344.
Clear bags and Bag tags are required for all household waste. There is a weight restriction of 40 lbs. per bag of household
waste. You may see the same truck collecting both the waste and recycling. The truck is split with two compartments.
Please place all garbage and recycling out by 7:00 a.m. for pick up. Residents living in the East Wawanosh Ward, please place
your garbage and recycling beside your mailbox. Waste Management is not responsible for returning to collect materials
that were placed out after 7:00 a.m.
