Vodden, Campbell to retire,
NH freezes its remuneration
Continued from page 21
was also pointed out that council
doesn't receive pay for its regular
meetings, which are considered part
of the honoraria.
For meetings outside of those
regularly scheduled council
meetings, members and designated
representatives receive $60 per two
hour or less meeting, $100 per
meeting three to four hours long or
$120 for meetings over four hours.
Those rates are significantly lower
than the Huron County average of
$94.81, $115.28 and $147.61
respectively.
Councillor Bill Knott moved to
have the issue tabled until the next
session of council because he didn't
feel the current council should set
the wages so close to the election.
Councillor Brock Vodden,
however, was of a different mind.
After explaining council hasn't had a
raise in seven years, he said an
increase was due.
He then stated he felt the decision
was one the current council should
handle so the next council doesn't
need to vote on its own wages.
Vodden also announced, when
contrary views were presented, that
he wouldn't fight one way or the
other for himself because he isn't
running in the municipal election
later this year.
Councillor Trevor Seip said he
didn't feel comfortable paying
himself more until he was able to
make a measurable difference in the
taxes that North Huron ratepayers
face.
"Based on the comments I've had,
I'll never get paid more than what
we do now and that's fine," he said.
"Until we make hardline decisions
on services and things we need, and
I mean need, in this municipality, I
don't think council should receive
one cent more for what they're being
paid."
Throughout the discussion,
Deputy -Reeve James Campbell also
announced he is retiring.
Council decided to keep the freeze
on council honoraria and per diem.
As part of the report, council also
decided to change the way
conventions are budgeted for, going
to a $2,500 cash limit per year.
Previously, council was limited to
one convention's costs per year
covered by tax dollars.
Under the new system, a
councillor can attend multiple
conventions if they cost less, and
ratepayers aren't saddled with
additional costs.
An additional $2,500 will also be
included in future budgets for
general council training
opportunities.
