PAGE 15. Volunteers important part of Blyth Festival By Denny Scott - The Citizen When it comes to volunteers, there are few organizations in Huron County that rely on them more than the Blyth Festival. Annually, the Festival runs thanks to the assistance of 115 to 120 active volunteers who perform duties such as ushering, stuffing mailers, helping to run events like the annual used book sale and doing other jobs throughout the Festival and Blyth Memorial Hall. Organizing these volunteers comes down to Audience Services Manager and Volunteer Co-ordinator Lisa Harper alongside Festival Board of Directors member and volunteer herself, Wendy Hutton. Harper said the Festival relies heavily on its volunteers and, if retention rates are any indication, the volunteers enjoy the work they do as well. "We easily have 80 per cent of our volunteers return year after year," she said. "Right now, we're encouraging young people to join us. It's good for their volunteer hours and hopefully they will enjoy themselves and stay with us. It may also get them involved in theatre work or acting." Harper said the six score of volunteers the Festival boasts range in age from 16 to 90 years old, representing an excellent demographic for the organization. BRIAN E. May 7 will be orientation night for volunteers for this year's theatre season. No registration is needed and the event, which starts at 7 p.m., will run for two hours. The Festival also annually holds a volunteer appreciation event, which typically includes a dinner or draw. "It's the least we can do because we couldn't run the Festival without them," Harper said. "They put their heart and soul into it. We're looking forward to a great season. Recently, the Festival had 15 volunteers in to help stuff brochures for mailing. Those 15 individuals, over three hours, stuffed 13,000 brochures which Harper said is nothing short of amazing. "The big thing is that people have fun," she said. "We always make each other laugh. As soon as we start gearing up for the season and the volunteers show up, it's like they breathe new life into the office" Harper has been with the Blyth Festival, managing, among other responsibilities, the box office for the organization since 2013. She said she is pleased with the Festival's performance for the past several years, with increasing attendance and an average of 2,000 new visitors each year. For more information on volunteering with the Festival, contact Harper at the Blyth Festival box office at 519-523-9300. Thank You •to all our Volunteers It is very much BRUSSELS appreciated.
