Huron East defers Evergreen Holsteins amendment
By Shawn Loughlin
The Citizen
Huron East Council has chosen to
defer a zoning bylaw amendment in
the Grey Ward after a number of
concerns were raised at the April 3
meeting.
The applicant, Evergreen
Holsteins Ltd., is looking to build a
new barn that will house its milking
operation, which will be moved from
the old barn, which will house the
operation's heifers after the
expansion.

April showers are to bring May
flowers but what does April snow
bring? It brings many unhappy
drivers and Wednesday and Friday,
put everyone's driving abilities to
the test. Nasty driving snow made
for a difficult drive, one of the worst
this year in my thoughts.
Thankfully, everyone arrived
home safe and sound and we hope
that is the last blast of winter snow!
We welcome back to Fran
Breckenridge and her sister
RuthAnn from their winter holiday
in Florida. They spent a couple of
months in the area of Sebring, an
hour or so south of Orlando. They
spent time biking, hiking, walking,
swimming and keeping active
everyday. Welcome back.
The Cranbrook Dart Club held its
final evening of play on March 28.
They had 21 players out for a good
time. There were three teams
winning four games for a very equal
night of play. They were Team 1 of
Ern Lewington and John Gillis,
Team 2 of Ev Blake, Murray Keffer
and Fred Smith and Team 5 of Rob
VanderVeen and Pat Gillis. The high
scores of the night were by the
Lewington couple. Annette hit 109
and Ern hit 114. The top scores for
the season included Rita Bowers
hitting 128, Jane Zwep hit 124,
Teuni Smith made 114 and Annette
finished with 109. The top -scoring
men included Murray Houston and
George Zwep hitting 140, Murray
Keffer with 137, Martin Boettcher
with 134 and Ron VanderVeen
hitting 133. Congratulations to all.
The group has had a good season
even with many nights of very cold,
icy, wet and snowy winter weather.
They are now looking ahead to a
productive farming season.
To finish their season, the group
gathered, yet again, on a stormy
Wednesday night. Instead of playing
darts, they met at Blyth Brook maple
farm to enjoy a delicious roast beef
dinner. Twenty-six gathered for the
night of good food and laughs.
The club members wished
restored health to one of their best
players, Murray Houston, and hopes
he will be back with them next
season.
The club praised the Bacherts for
a lovely meal and evening.
Our sympathies are extended to
Duane Gibson and family on the
passing of his father Don Gibson.
Don was husband to Donna for 60
years and will also be missed by
daughter Dana and her family.
Our condolences to all.
Welcome back to Paul and Cheryl
Ryan and Doug and Sheila Bauer
from a great winter's vacation. They
went to Arizona and were joined by
Darrell and Kathy Bauer and Ken
and Leanne McNeil for three weeks
away.
This was a motorcycle -oriented
vacation and they went biking most
everyday. They are based at
Goodyear, Arizona and from there
they travelled the area. This year
they went to California and headed
to the Ventura area, to see where the
wildfires had happened this past
year. Unfortunately, when they
arrived there, the highway patrol had
closed the roads due to forecasted
heavy rains, and the potential for
mudslides.
They went to Sedona, Arizona
where there was snow one day,
cooler temperatures for the most
part when they were away, but they
didn't have to shovel snow.
Congratulations to Paul and
Carolyn Somerville on the arrival of
a granddaughter. The new baby is
Grace Carolyn and is the second
child for Scott and Andrea
Somerville of Grande Prairie,
Alberta. Paul and Carolyn have just
returned from a two-week visit to
help out the new baby and big
brother Reece. Congrats to all!
Celebrating a birthday last
weekend with family was Shannon
Craig. Husband Dave Soontiens,
parents Graeme and Helen Craig
and brother Michael enjoyed a
delicious meal at Foster's Restaurant
in Stratford. Congrats to Shannon!
We send get -well wishes to Susan
Haggitt, who is a patient in a
London Hospital. We hope she is
home soon.
Excited first-time grandparents
are John and Karen Braecker. A
beautiful little granddaughter has
arrived to the joy of parents
Adam and Roxanne Braecker. Her
name is a mystery at the moment,
but we will catch up with them next
week. Congratulations to all.
Celebrating birthdays this past
week includes Nate Fritz, David
Baan, Marlene Glanville, Colleen
McCallum Bromley, Donna
Hannon, Stephen Gulutzen, Shelley
McGavin, Doug J. Mitchell,
Janet Mitchell, Wayne Regele, Ron
Driscoll, Matthew Huether,
Kevin Wilbee, Marie McGavin,
Heather Blake Dunbar, Bonnie
Finlayson Hastings, Shannon Craig
and Cole Zwep. Happy birthday
to all.
In order for the new facility to be
located where the operation's
owners want it, minimum distance
separation (MDS) would have to be
reduced by 75 metres, said planner
Carol Leeming The required MDS
for the facility, which proposes
1,038 new nutrient management
units, is 454 metres, but is proposed
to only be 379 metres from the
closest house, which belongs to the
Armstrongs.
Both Brian Armstrong and his
wife Elaine spoke to the application.
Brian said he was concerned with
the reduction in MDS distance,
saying that due to factors like odour,
increased traffic and drainage, he felt
his enjoyment of his
property would be diminished as a
result.
Councillors proposed that the barn
could be moved to the other end of
the property, which would alleviate
any MDS concerns. However, it was
explained to them that there is a
significant drop-off of the level of
the land at the other end of the
operation. Not only that, but in
looking after heifers which would
have just calved, the owners are
trying to keep their walking distance
as short as possible.
Mike and Kathy Bishop, nearby
landowners, were also concerned
about what the expansion of the farm
would mean for their property.
Leeming said that due to the
location of their farm, further
construction wouldn't impact the
Bishops' ability to build a new
facility any further than it already is.
With the Armstrongs, however,
their construction potential may be
limited, Leeming said, but she would
have to look into the specifics

Councillor David Blaney was
concerned about the location of the
new facility, saying that the other
side of the property, as had been
stated earlier in the discussion,
seemed perfect for the barn, except
for the fact of the drop-off on the
property. He was concerned that
council was being asked to make a
concession on the MDS not because
it was the "only" way the barn could
be built, but rather that it was the
cheapest way.
Neighbouring residents then asked
if the operation planned to expand
any further and the answer was that
while nothing was up for discussion
beyond what was on the table, there
was no telling what the future would
hold.
Leeming recommended deferring
the application for a chance for
further meetings and to investigate
the potential for an alternate location
for the barn and council agreed,
deferring the motion to a future
meeting.
