Cowbell team event raises ,8,250 for MS Society Eight long hours The MS Ride team sponsored by Blyth Cowbell Brewing Company occupied the local building's Threshers Hall for eight hours on Saturday, with 16 cyclists riding stationary bicycles from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. in an effort to raise money to put towards the team's ride this July, which raises money for the MS Society of Canada. Last year the team became the first in Ontario history to raise over $100,000. This year, the team's goal is to be the first MS Ride team in Canadian history to surpass the $150,000 mark. Saturday's event raised $8,250 for the cause after all expenses had been paid. From left: David Palmer, Scott Lumley, Steve Thompson and Ryan Trusler. (Hannah Dickie photo) XPLORNET Connect to what matters i xplornet.com By Shawn Loughlin The Citizen The Blyth Cowbell Brewing Company -sponsored cycling team raised $8,250 for the Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society of Canada on Saturday thanks to 16 members cycling in place on their trainers for eight hours in the brewery's Threshers Hall on Saturday. Team members Steve Thompson and Bryan Dunn conceived the idea for the event and it was then pulled together by team captain Anita Trusler, among others. Locals participating in the event were Blyth's Shawn Loughlin and Jeff Peters, as well as Jessica Lundshof of Seaforth's JL Retirement Living project. The stationary cycling ran from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. with hundreds of Cowbell customers stopping by the event to cheer on cyclists over the course of the day. A local ringette team, featuring Blyth's Sarah Sparling, was celebrating a championship at the restaurant that afternoon and took the time to help cheer on the cyclists and even took a short turn on the bikes, if they could reach the pedals. At the end of the night, a number of prizes were raffled off based on tickets that had been sold in the weeks leading up to the event, as well as the day of the spin. Items given away included a cruiser bike, a $400 Cowbell prize pack, a cycling kit from a Sarnia -based cycling store and several health and wellness gift baskets. Trusler said it was a great event and that it has been encouraging for the team's cyclists, many of whom hail from the Sarnia area, to connect with Blyth and their new Cowbell sponsors after years of being sponsored by Sparling's Propane. At last year's MS Ride from Grand Bend to London and back, the team was honoured in several categories, including being the first- ever MS Ride team in Ontario to raise over $100,000. The team surpassed the mark by over $20,000. In the seven years that the team has been sponsored by Sparling family -run businesses (first by Sparling's Propane and now by Cowbell), the team has raised nearly half a million dollars for the MS Society of Canada This year, the team has stated that its goal is to raise $150,000. If achieved, it will be the first time in Canadian MS Ride history that a team has surpassed the $150,000 mark. This year's ride will take place on July 28-29. Prior to that, a number of the team's cyclists will visit Blyth in June for a Huron County ride and lunch at Cowbell. This Blyth -based event began last year with a ride from Blyth to Seaforth and back, followed by a reception hosted by Blyth -based members of the team.
