Huron County looking ahead to 2018 tourism strategy
By Shawn Loughlin
The Citizen
Huron County is planning on
putting its best foot forward in 201 8
in terms of revitalizing its tourism
strategy.
Scott Currie, the county's
communications and marketing co-
ordinator, presented the county's
tourism strategy for the next two
years to council at its March 14
committee of the whole meeting in
Goderich.
The tourism strategy is part of the
county's economic development
plan, which spans 2016 to 2020.
"The [Huron County Economic
Development Board] believes that
Huron County's tourism, arts and
culture sector is a vital part of our
local economy and, with the correct
supports in place, has the potential
for further growth and prosperity,"
Currie said in his report to council.
He also told council that the
strategy received unanimous support
from members of the Huron County
Tourism, Arts and Culture Enabling
Task Force (TAC) at their Jan. 30,
2018 meeting.
"Recognizing that the knowledge
and experience of entrepreneurs and
volunteers working in this sector are
critical to designing supports, a task
force was created in early 2017 to
advise the [Huron County Economic
Development Board]. The Huron
County Tourism, Arts and Culture
Enabling Task Force (TAC) is
comprised of local tourism
operators, industry experts and
county staff," Currie said. "TAC met
several times during 2017 to develop
a strategy that charts a new course to
enhance the sector over the next two
years"
Currie said that the county's role
in tourism over the next two years
should be to build capacity and
destination development leadership
as well as provide sector supports
and curate story -based destination
marketing of Ontario's West Coast.
The strategy lists eight specific
priorities that Huron County staff
and tourism partners will be working
towards achieving in the next two
years. They are: track performance
of the local tourism economy; renew
Ontario's West Coast web presence
and improve online marketing
performance; develop a terms of
reference for a regional funding
program to catalyze growth of the
arts and culture sector; support
tourism operators in managing their
own online presence effectively;
reflecting our best, curate and
publish compelling story -based
content supported by world-class
marketing collateral; engage in
strategic partnerships that build
capacity and support destination
development in Huron County;
improve wayfinding signage so
visitors find their destinations easily
and ensure public assets are market -
ready and responsibly promoted.
"TAC believes that achieving each
of these outcomes is necessary to
cultivate outstanding destination
marketing and management for
Huron County — the strategic vision.
However, it is also recognized that
long-term success requires
supportive partnerships between the
county and organizations operating
within our tourism community,"
Currie said in his report. "This
strategy outlines the county's
commitment to building these
partnerships to realize the economic
potential of our region's tourism,
arts and culture sector."
Currie said that in order to reach
the county's goals, staff members
have prepared a "detailed tactical
work plan" to ensure they reach the
finish line.
The report claims that total
expenditures for the strategy will be
$185,000 for 2018, but $90,000 of
that money is coming from a
commitment from Regional Tourism
Organization 4 (RTO4) and a further
$90,000 will be coming from the
Economic Development Board's
reserves.
Council approved Currie's report
and paved the way for the strategy to
be rolled out over the course of the
next two years.
