Marks to take over Brussels Bulk and Bargain
New owner
The Brussels Bulk and Bargains shop will be under the new ownership of employee Wendy
Marks. The current owners are selling to Marks. Marks said the store will be closed for one
day early next month to finalize the sale, and then open April 3. (Brenda Nyveld photo)
Brussels Bulk and Bargains will
be changing hands next month when
long-time employee Wendy Marks
takes over the business.
Marks says the store, which is
located on the west side of Brussels'
main street, will be closed on April 2
as she and co-owners Mike and
Michelle Dauphin finalize the
paperwork and, on April 3, the store
will be open under her new
management.
"I've worked there for the last two
years," she said. "When Mike and
Michelle decided they didn't want to
keep the business to focus on
[Dauphin's Feed Mill in Walton] I
decided I would rather take over
than let someone else buy it."
Marks said the store has become
an important part of Brussels
downtown since it transitioned from
a hardware store to the Bulk and
Bargains several years ago.
"Brussels definitely needs to keep
this store," she said. "I was afraid it
would close and Brussels does very
well supporting it. So many people
in town use it, so I wanted to see it
stay open."
Marks said the support the
business experiences is driven by the
fact that shoppers don't need to leave
town for many things the store offers
including gifts, bulk food and "a
little bit of everything else."
For the immediate future, the store
will stay the same under Marks,
however she does plan to make some
changes as to what the store offers
by bringing in new items and new
lines. She also plans to have a new

section added to the store called
Granny's Corner, which will feature
knit and crocheted items crafted
primarily by Marks' sister Janet
Mitchell with Marks helping out as
she can.
"We'll be offering things of every
size from blankets down to
dishcloths," she said.

There is certainly something to be
said for sunshine on a March day.
The past few days gave us nice cold
sunny days, making life just so fine.
Clear days, nice to get around,
elevated mood for many and a lovely
way for the snow to slip away. So
hurray for March and the sunshine.
March Break is history.
Spontaneous was the word of the
At the Branch
week for this palace. Grandchildren
and sons, friends and family, all
most welcome, brought their slant to
life to our world. Ages and
experiences from life make for some
really neat conversations. Casual
chats in private or in the group subtly
let the others know what life is like
in their world — very entertaining
and enlightening.
It is always good to see the world
from another angle. People coming
and going, games to play, menus to
discuss, food to eat, cookies to make
(and eat of course) and another day
is done. It is good to eat people out
of their comfort zone and watch
what happens. Thanks for making
my week.

The Brussels Legion Branch had
Comrades attending the provincial
darts competition in the Newbury
Branch, near Thamesville, on
Saturday. Comrade Ron Schmidt
competed in the singles competition
and finished third in the province.
Congratulations to Ron on his
bronze medal finish! The team of
Tyler Verbeek, Daisy Wong
Schmidt, Ryan Shaw and Ron
played in the team competition and
they had a great day. They won four
out of their eight games, but needed
five wins to advance to the playoffs.
Great job against some very good
competition. Congrats to all our
Branch Comrades!
The Thursday night dart league
had a dozen darters taking aim at the
boards. Winners were: first Krysta
Bujold and Sandra Josling Brown;
second, Roger McHardy and Betty
Ann Smith; high shots, Deb Birch,
119 and Penny Reynolds, 101.
A great crowd was on hand for the
Irish Beer Bugs Trivia Night at the
Branch. A lot of work goes into the
prep work for the trivia questions
and Comrades Sandra and Catrina
Josling get all the credit. They had
eight teams with over 30 players
taking part. The winning team was
the Irish Shenanigans, Patty
Vandermeer, Nancy Bridge, Jayne
Ross, Jenn Smith and Nicole Noble.
There were lots of laughs, good
food with nachos, fries and pickle
spears. Great job by Sandra,
Catrina, B.J., Jamie, Linda Bird and
Nanci Ducharme.
The Saturday afternoon euchre
had 11 -and -a -half tables of players
organized by Comrades Glenn
Bridge and Deb Cann. Winners
were: first, Bruce and Joan
Hoelsher, 77; second, Sam and
Nigel, 71 and Louise and Mary, 70;
lone hands, Edna and Judy, six and
low Jean McGlynn and Alice
Horsburgh, 49. There will be euchre
on Saturday, March 31, so put it on
your schedule.
The Sunday night dance finally
had perfect weather and many
familiar faces returned due to the
good weather. There were 80 people
enjoying the evening of good music
provided by the Tri -Country Band.
It was great to have a crowd again.
Comrades Jo -Ann, Judy, Linda,
Mabel and Deb worked a little
harder than normal, but it was no
problem! It was great to see the
floor full of eager dancers.
up time with old friends was
enjoyed.
Of course it was Irish day in that
timeframe so a little cabbage and
potatoes hit the dining table and
green clothes were a requirement.
Images of two men who looked
like leprechauns at the table will be
hard to erase but otherwise good
friends dressed accordingly and
good food and lots of laughs made
the week.
The weeks of Lent are slipping
away with Holy Week coming next.
This time to prepare and remember
is celebrated in Brussels at the
United Church with the Ministerial
folk in charge. This time together as
Christians for quiet thought and
contemplation begins at 12:05 p.m.
with lunch right after. The ad in The
Citizen will give you details you
need to know.
A new Canada Food Guide is in
the making and it's interesting to see
how our idea of food has change
since the guide was produced many
years ago. Portion sizes, processed
food, imported food, plate sizes and
ethnic foods are all part of the way
we now eat. Check your next meal,
think about how your menu has
changed and ask yourself, "is it for
the better?"
Education and getting this guide to
the public are needed as many foods
now contain sugar in many, many
forms and our blood levels and pant
sizes are showing our intake. A show
on TVO lately stated there are 47,
yes 47, different words for sugar on
labels. So, like life, labels are
complicated, but it's your health, so
watch the labels and be aware of the
coming new food guide.
Enjoy the sunshine.
Bye now, Betty G.W.
