Grey 4-11 K -OS in the Kitchen Club wraps things up K OS in the Kitchen The Grey 4-H Club's K -OS in the Kitchen project wrapped sessions that taught members the ins and outs of cooking. By Emma Baan The fourth and fifth meetings of the Grey Township 4-H K -OS In The Kitchen project were held in Walton, Feb. 16 and 23. The meetings started with the 4-H pledge and all the members took turns answering the roll calls. On Feb. 16, members had the Huron County Community Food Advisors as their guests. Donna Bauer and Pat Dalton are volunteers with this group and talked about safe food handling and a good discussion was had with the members. Donna and Pat then did an experiment to demonstrate how easily germs are spread. Two members rubbed some vegetable oil on their hands and then rubbed in some cinnamon. All members (starting with the two members covered in `cinnamon germs') then shook hands with the Community Food Advisors and introduced themselves. After all the introductions were made, everyone was covered with `cinnamon germs'. Everyone then went to wash their hands with soap, proper washing takes as long as it does to sing "Happy Birthday" twice. With guidance from Donna and Pat, members made hummus and cut up late last month after several (Photo submitted) up vegetables and then everyone was able to assemble their own vegetable wraps for a healthy evening snack. President Grace Hallahan thanked Donna and Pat for coming to our meeting and presented them with 4- H bags to thank them. The topic of the second meeting was microwave cooking and members made "mug recipes". The members were split into two groups, each group made four different mug recipes, these included pancakes, apple pie oatmeal, meatloaf and strawberry rice pudding. All the recipes were quick, healthy and simple to make. - AD OENTIUL DRIVERS WANTED ELGIN Reaional Carrier Searchina For: FAST APPROVED AZ DRIVERS • Steady Employment • Benefits • Paid Border Crossing/Waiting Time • 500-600 Mile Radius Per Trip within London, ON Terminal • Home time Throughout the Week • New Drivers Welcome • Training Provided CALL TODAY TOLL-FREE: 1- 800-567-2609 Ext. 230 ADVERTISING ocna Ontario Community Newspapers Association REACH MILLIONS OF CUSTOMERS IN ONTARIO WITH ONE EASY CALL! The first activity was a trivia game about kitchen measurements and some questions were, how many teaspoons in a tablespoon? "how many cups in a litre?" and "what is the difference between a `t' and a "T" in a recipe?" Then members learned about how microwaves work, as well as some safety tips regarding which items are microwave -safe and which items to avoid using in the microwave. Then members practised their judging skills as they had to judge a class of scooping utensils so they could get comfortable with public speaking. The next meeting will be the last regular meeting. All members were asked to finish up their 4-H record books as much as possible and to make a healthy microwave recipe at home and record their families' comments about the recipe. The meetings were closed with the 4-H motto "Learn to do by doing". Winthrop ladies meet PEOPLE AROUND WALTON By Jo -Ann McDonald Call 887-6570 The Winthrop ladies bunch gathered at the Walton Inn last week to celebrate the March birthday of Jeannette Robinson. The group was a little smaller than usual because of other commitments for the ladies but Karen Braecker, Jennifer Vellinga and Yolanda Gubelmann were able to join Jeannette's party. The group enjoyed breakfast and had a few laughs at some of the comical cards she received. Happy birthday Jeannette. We are pleased to report that Ernst Gubelmann is out of hospital and is slowly recovering from a very serious fall on the ice. We hope he continues to improve in the coming weeks and months.
