Lions and tigers and bears, oh my!
The Wingham Skating Club held its annual performance evening on March 7 at the North
Huron Wescast Community Complex. The event was called Under the Big Top and had a
carnival theme featuring wild animals, magicians, clowns and acrobats. Above, some of the
wilder animals took to the ice, along with their handlers, to put on the greatest show on earth.

Curling Club hosts awards night
Brussels Curling Club finished the
year with good curling, new
experiences for some, good food and
its annual meeting. The third draw of
the year for February/March had 10
full teams and four spares on the
sheets. The skips for the draw were
all new to the experience and some
found it a challenge but all were
eager learners.
It is not easy remembering which
turn to call, which ice is correct,
what the ice is doing. Yes, a lot to
teach and remember for new skips.
Each new skip had an experienced
skip, who played lead, to help advise
and help them. A great learning
experience for all!
The winner of the third draw was
team Cody Sanders, Katherine
Thomet, Sandra Cable and George
Zwep with 41.5 points; second,
Murray Hoover, Doug Bremner,
Nicole Alexander and Matthew
Cardiff, 39; third, Don Chesher,
Mary Bernard, Steve Bowers and
Gary Pipe, 37; fourth, Martin
Thomet, Halee McCann, Jane Rock
and Mike Alexander, 36.5; fifth,
Diana Dolmage, Karen Uhler and
Steve Knight, 36; sixth, Jeff Cardiff,
Norm Dobson, Dona Knight and Jo-
Ann McDonald, 30; seventh, tied,
Jennie Schimanski, Janelle
Caldwell, Larry Rock and Douwa
Top and Mike Bernard, Danica
Janmaat, Sarah Alexander and Steve
Steiss, 28 points.
Team MaryAnn Thompson,
Mervyn Bauer, Perry Pearce and
Carman Bernard finished ninth with
20 points and tenth, Tyler Jutzi,
Brian Warwick, Debbie Coultes and
Jack Pipe, 19. Awards will be given
out at the banquet on March 16 in
the upper room at the Brussels,
Morris and Grey Community
Centre.
The annual meeting was held as
the curlers enjoyed the delicious fare
of finger foods on the final night.
Susan Alexander presented the
financial report for all to see.
We are happy to have Halee
McCann as the new first vice-
president and Doug Bremner as the
new second vice-president. Moving
into the president's role for the
2018/2019 season is Carman
Bernard.
Discussion was held on how folks
liked the theme evenings, dress -up
evenings and the mixing of players'
roles during the game.
Most were in favour with a
couple of suggestions to try for next
year.
The entertainment committee had
two members resign and Danica
Janmaat became part of the
committee.
The draw committee will have
Mike Alexander, Steve Steiss and
George Zwep join them. The
bonspiel committee has Steve
Knight, MaryAnn Thompson,
Carman and Mary Bernard, Jeff
Cardiff, Dona Knight, Mery and
Donna Bauer and Jo -Ann McDonald
on it.
The evening concluded with
words from Don Chesher, thanking
all for a good year and hoping all
will be back next year, as well as
attending the banquet on Friday,
March 16. It begins with social time
at 6 p.m. and a potluck meal at 6:30
p.m. Come and see who the winner
is of the D.A. Rann Memorial
Trophy for the highest points in a
draw.
Pipe tops mixed
curling bonspiel
The Brussels Curling Club hosted
the mixed curling bonspiel on
Saturday at the Brussels, Morris and
Grey Community Centre. The
excellent work of the bonspiel
committee has teams coming back
year after year to enjoy the
competition, good food and
hospitality of the Brussels Curling
Club. There were 20 teams with 10
on each draw from Mitchell,
Palmerston, Listowel, Seaforth,
Stratford, Goderich, Mildmay and
even players from Sarnia.
The first draw had a team with
three players from Mildmay and saw
local Jack Pipe take first place with
three wins and 48.25 points; second,
Dan Ward's team, 38.5; third,
Mark Bancroft, 36; fourth, Jo -Arm
McDonald, 35.75; fifth, Jack
McLachlan, 33.25; sixth, Debbie
Coultes, 23; seventh, Betty Visser,
21.5; eighth, Halle McCann, 20.5;
ninth, George Zwep, 18.5 and
tenth, Kriss Snell, 10.5. The scores
are from playing three six -end
games added together. How are
scores calculated you ask?
The winning team receives five
points for the win, plus one point
for each end they score points
plus one-quarter point for each
rock they score. The losing team
scores just the point for each end
they win and the quarter point for
each rock scored. Add the scores
together and you get your total for
the day.
The second draw had the team of
Ron Brown scoring 48.75 points for
the top prize; second, Steve Steiss,
36.75; third, Karen Uhler, 34.75;
fourth, Jeff Cardiff , 34; fifth, Cody
Sanders, 32.75; sixth, Stacey
Culbert, 31.5; seventh, Brad
Knight, 23; eighth, Don Osborn,
18.75; ninth, Matthew
Cardiff, 10.5 and tenth, Tom
Sutherland, 10.
It was a great day with the curling
starting at 9 a.m. and the games
ending at 7 p.m. The club
appreciates all the members who
gave their time to help out including
morning crew of Dona Knight, Steve
Knight, Steve Steiss, Steve Bowers,

Bauer and lunch bunch Jane Zwep,
