BIAs aim for
'Win This Space'
By Denny Scott
The Citizen
North Huron Council and the
Blyth Business Improvement Area
(BIA) are joining forces to recreate
the Win This Space program that has
shown so much promise in Huron
East.
The program, which was rolled
out locally by Huron East Economic
Development Officer Jan Hawley
and has since become an annual
project for her municipality, allows
local entrepreneurs to be trained in
various aspects of running
businesses. At the end of the
program, one entrepreneur wins a
prize package which includes a year
of rent for a business space in the
community.
During North Huron Township's
March 5 meeting, council approved
a motion to apply for funding from
Libro Credit Union to try and make
the program happen both in
Wingham and in Blyth. The
Wingham application was made to
the Wingham branch of the credit
union while the Blyth application
was made to the Clinton branch.
If the applications are successful,
each winner will receive up to
$12,500 in prizes and rent. The
funds will be acquired through
Libro, the township and the
respective community's BIAs.
Councillor Bill Knott said the
program seems to be beneficial for
the communities that host it.
"It's a really good opportunity to
have young people involved," he
said. "It teaches a large group of
people, who have the opportunity to
get training they wouldn't get
anywhere else, at no cost to them."
Two days after North Huron
approved the applications to Libro,
the issue was brought before the
Blyth BIA at its March 7 meeting.
The organization committed to
support the Win This Space
program, earmarking $2,500 of its
accumulated surplus for the project.
Waste contractor retirement forces interim measures
By Shawn Loughlin
The Citizen
Huron East has found itself
looking for a waste management
solution for several of its wards
with an earlier deadline than
anticipated.
Council knew a problem was
looming with the pending closure of
the Mid -Huron Landfill at the end of

Brown, council was forced to find a
drastic solution last week.
While council's Administration
Committee had been busy working
on a solution, Brown informed
council that he would be shuttering
his operation immediately. Chief
Administrative Officer Brad Knight
told council at its March 6 meeting
that council was caught offguard by
the decision and, with waste due to
be on curbs the following day, had to
send public works staff around to
collect waste in the interim for
Seaforth and its surrounding
communities, Vanastra and
Tuckersmith.
At its Feb. 28 meeting, the
committee recommended that the
municipality employ the services of
Waste Management for collection in
the aforementioned wards effective
July 1. However, after that meeting
and the news from Brown, council
was left to come up with its own
short-term solution.
In the meantime, staff is hoping to
move up the Waste Management
takeover date in hopes of bridging
the gap.
At the March 6 meeting, council
accepted the first two
recommendations of the committee
to employ Waste Management.
However, Councillor Ray Chartrand
spoke against the third
recommendation, which would
make waste management part of a
ratepayer's annual taxes.
Chartrand said that all of the
residents he spoke to said they
