Irish practices more prevalent
A NOTE FROM BETTY

Abby Strome performed a solo ice dance at the Brussels
Skating Club's annual performance event held last
Thursday. The event was Olympic -themed and included
performances that took inspiration from speed skating,
skiing, luge and bobsleigh and curling. (Shawn Loughlin photo)

Lent and March are slipping away
quickly. The days speed along, life is
good and suddenly it's St. Patrick's
time and the green is everywhere. I
have a pin for the 17th that says,
"Today everyone is Irish" and it
seems to me that gets more obvious
every year.
Irish music has been on several
television specials lately. Paddyfest
and the North Perth Arts Council
hosted a lively Kitchen Ceilidh in
Listowel last week. Fiddle champion
Shane Cook, along with Brian
Pickell with mandolin, guitar and a
great voice, along with Kyle
Waymouth who can make several
stringed instruments shimmer,
combined to make terrific music.
When Kyle's feet tapped and flew to
some familiar and some original
tunes they offered a pretty fine
evening. Yes, a lot of toes were
tapping and many were not Irish
toes.
Sales of the green things are going
well at the Bulk and Bargain, with
only children's green braces left, just
in case green braces were on your
shopping list. There are still lots of
hats, bangles, bows and other green
decorations just waiting for your
Irish side to pop up.
Local darters back in action
By Jo -Ann McDonald
Last weekend, the Brussels
Legion Branch was quiet, but we
hope this weekend will have a great
turnout for the Irish beer bugs trivia
pub night on Saturday, March 17.
Comrade Sandra and Catrina have
been working hard at researching
interesting questions and preparing
the presentation for the event. Come
out and see how "wise" you are and
hopefully win some cash. Just $5 a
person to play and you can be a
single, pairs or team players. Come
out for some fun!
The Thursday night darts had 16
darters taking aim at the boards.
Finally the flu has passed and
holidays are over so everyone is
back to playing. There was a three-
way tie for first place and after
playoffs the winners were Gord
Jacklin, and Sandra Josling Brown.
Second place was Sheron
Stadelmann and Jim Brown and
third place went to Sharon Robbins
and Kirk Smith. The high shots of
the night went to Krysta Bujold
hitting 122, Gord hitting 152 and
Wayne Smith scoring 105.
Sunday was Zone Convention for
our Branch to attend. It was held in
Blyth and representing our Branch
was Comrade Jo -Ann McDonald, in
place of President Comrade Jamie
Mitchell. Comrade Jo -Ann accepted
the early bird award of 73.5 per cent
paid membership on behalf of the
Branch. We strive every year to get
closer to 100 per cent of our
membership to be paid by Nov. 30,
so we still have a way to go!
The Branch is always striving to
recruit new members to join our
Branch. You no longer need to have
an affiliation to a Veteran to join the
Legion.
You only need to be a Canadian
citizen, and value and respect those
who served, those who died and
those who are serving our country in
the Armed Forces. Drop into the
Branch and pick up an application
and join now.

Big donations
The Brussels Livestock Auction Challenge IPM committee donated $1,000 to the Brussels
Optimist Club and $1,000 to the Tanner Steffler Foundation. Both cheques were presented at
the 19th annual Brussels Optimist spring dinner and auction. From left: Optimist Kevin Deitner,

Once again the good work and
good intentions of the Optimist Club
surfaced on Saturday night. Another
evening of success. Supporters came
for the good food, good company
and a good cause. Known for the
generous spirit in our community,
folks came ready to support the
cause. This year the Optimist Club
chose to financially support the
Tanner Steffler Foundation and the
people present did their part. There
were great donated items to bid on
for a needed service in community,
showed once again, working
together, good things happen.
I hope you have the joy this week
of entertaining grandchildren so that
everyone can have a memorable
March Break in whatever form you
choose.
Easter is fast approaching, time to
check schedules. Besides the usual
bake sale at the United Church on
Easter Sunday morning, Intern
Hillary MacDonald is organizing a
children's time with crafts and an
Easter egg hunt in the afternoon.
Mark that date.
My people came from Sligo,
Ireland many moons ago, so the 17th
is a good time to celebrate history.
Bye now, Betty G.W.
