Locals celebrate 50th anniversary in Hawaii PEOPLE AROUND WALTON By Jo -Ann McDonald Call 887-6570 Again our community has been hit with sadness with the news of the passing of Dave Marks. Our sympathies are extended to his wife Alice and children Rose, Susan and Sandra and their families. "Davey" was quite a guy and I always enjoyed my conversations with him every couple of months. He loved to tell me about his latest project, helping out the family, whether it be out on the farm or driving the grandchildren somewhere, or about his tractors and what he was doing in the shop. He had been a farmer, a worker at Champion in Goderich and was involved with the Blyth Threshers and enjoyed his retirement. Our condolences to all his family. Our congratulations to Laurie Grobbink and Ryan Trachsel, who were married on the very stormy first weekend in February. They were married at St. James Catholic Church in Seaforth and held a lovely reception at the Brodhagen Community Centre. Laurie is the daughter of MaryAnn and the late Henry Grobbink. Laurie was attended by her sister, Jennifer, in a lovely black gown and her brothers, Mike and Dave, were groomsman. Sisters Rosie and Kristen were the emcees for the evening. The couple is living in Stratford. Congratulations to Marion Smith who celebrated her 90th birthday last weekend. A lovely afternoon was held in Listowel and many members of the family, friends and neighbours attended the celebration. Congratulations Marion. It is official, the Dauphin's store is now closed. They are busy tidying up and organizing what could possible move into the space from the feed division of Dauphin Feeds, which is not closing. It was not that she wanted to retire or celebrate her special birthday, but Val Pethick is now 65 and unemployed! Val hit the milestone on Valentine's Day, Wednesday and retired from Dauphin's on Friday! Happy retirement Val! The Cranbrook Dart Club had 20 A WI Day act of kindness The Majestic Women's Institute (WI) in Brussels marked the recent passing of WI Day on Feb. 19 by donating to the Books, Blankets and Bears project and handing over a large number of mostly handmade stuffed animals, blankets and other toys to the Fire Department of North Huron. These items are used by emergency services personnel in the event of a traumatic incident involving a child where a blanket or stuffed animal may be of use. Deputy -Chief Matt Townsend was on hand to accept the donation from the group. From left: Kathy Bridge, Bonnie Lindsay, Elfreda Klaassan, Bev Craddock, Townsend, Yvonne Knight, Lucy Hesse, Janet Haertel, Doreen Marks, Leona Armstrong and Marie McCutcheon. (shaven Loughlin photo) darters out on a foggy night. The winning teams were Team 5, Rob VanderVeen and Murray Houston winning five games, and Team 7 of Steve Bowers and Maria Boettcher also winning five. The high lady score was by Rita Bowers, 117, and the high man was Murray, hitting 121. Our sympathies are extended to Carol and Francis Hunt, Marion Hunt and Sandra Hunt and Jerry Zwep on the passing of father and grandfather, Gordon Hill. He will be missed by his wife Ruby and son Bev and family. He was a well respected man and the longest - serving president of the Ontario Federation of Agriculture. Our condolences to all. Our sympathies are extended to the Bishop family on the passing of Clarence Bishop. He will be missed by wife Rose Marie and children Kevin, Darlene and Mike and their families. Clarence was a farmer through and through and spent all his life on the farm. They raised cattle for many years and Clarence always had time for a chat. Our condolences to all. Returning from a family trip of a lifetime is the Glanville family. Lorne and Bonnie, Robert and Jackie from Walton and Paul and Teresa from High River, Alberta spent two weeks in Hawaii. The trip was a celebration of Lorne and Bonnie's 50th wedding anniversary. The first week was spent on a cruise ship going from island to island. The weather was hot and sunny and they did lots of sightseeing. They had lunch one day with Wayne and Linda Hopper, of Belgrave. Lorne and Bonnie had the unfortunate experience of being stuck in a tender boat, when a freak rain and wind storm blew up. They were not allowed to go back to the shore or to the ship, so they were stuck in the water being thrown around in the wind for an hour. They did not get sick, but some of their fellow boaters did. They were glad FROM WALTON to get back to the ship. The family was back on shore feeling sorry for the folks in the small boat, not knowing Lorne and Bonnie were on it! They rented a car in Maui and toured the island themselves. They watched hot lava running down the hill to the sea. They were told the lava had been running for a week. The second part of the vacation was spent in Honolulu. They spent time at Pearl Harbour. They met a veteran that was at Pearl Harbour at the time of the attack and helped pull men from the sunken ships. He is 97 years old now. Robert, Jackie and Teresa walked to the top of Diamond Head while Lorne, Bonnie and Paul spent the time relaxing on the beach. Lorne reports he couldn't have celebrated their anniversary any other way! Welcome back folks! Celebrating birthdays this past week were Keith Clark, Connor Driscoll, Jack Knight, Hayden Lee, Murray Houston, Monica McNichol, Shawna Terpstra, Helen Brenie, Kathy Clark, Tyler Williamson, Steve Knight and Kevin McNaughton.
