Leos an asset for Brussels
A NOTE FROM BETTY
Who has the best breakfast?
There were three Family Day breakfasts on Sunday
throughout northern Huron County, including one hosted
by the Brussels Lions. Lions Jim Prior and Cora Alcock
were on delivery duty for the fundraiser. (Dennyscottphoto)

Haylee McNeil of Teeswater was one half of the musical
activities at the Brussels Legion Branch on Saturday night.

The week started with the new
entertainment committee meeting to
discuss more ideas to implement for
the Brussels Legion Branch. They
have a trivia night March 17, spring
"lympx" on April 14, silent auction,
April 21 and a pub night, on May 12
planned at this time.
The Thursday night blind mixed
darts had a good bunch on hand to
play. Winners were:first, Sheron
Stadelmann and Sharon Robbins;
second, John Stadelmann and
Sandra Josling Brown; high, Catrina
Josling, 134 and Roger McHardy,
103; the honour of the third skunk of
the year went to Wayne Smith and
Penny Reynolds.
The Saturday afternoon euchre
had 11 tables of players hoping to
take home top prize. Winners were:
first, May and Florence, 74; second,
Joann MacDonald and Dorothy
Carter, 71; third, Marion and Olave

The "Get Sweet" wing night at the
Branch was well attended. The

McNeil and the karaoke by Dan
McNeil. The crowd enjoyed the
expanded food selection of dill
pickles and nachos as well as the
wings. The prize for the most -
dressed -alike couple went to Jeff
Heibein and Dawn Currie, while

Another year of Valentines is over.
I hope you had contact with the
loves in your life and know you are
loved. Having a birthday on
Valentine's Day makes it pretty safe
it is not forgotten.
I share the day with brother Clif,
who was born five years after me.
Over the years, that meant some
good parties. When we were young,
mom would check to see who wanted
a round cake and who was for a
square one. I can't imagine it caused
much arguing, but it was one of our
first lessons in compromise. At meal
time, a Valentine cake appeared,
ready to eat when the round one was
halved and placed on two sides of the
square and well -iced, two Valentine's
babes were happy.
The celebration for the Leo Club's
fifth anniversary will be past, being
held on Monday. For young people
entertain
included Sandra Josling Brown,
Judy Lee, Jo -Ann McDonald and
Nanci Ducharme.
It was nice to see Comrade Deb
Ross out and about after her knee
surgery. Comrade Dianne Huether
had her knee surgery in London last
week and we hope she is coming
along well. Comrade Mark
Campbell is in a Guelph hospital
and we hope they are having success
in conquering his health issues. Get
better all!
Congratulations to Comrades Ron
and Daisy Schimdt, Tyler Verbeek,
Ryan Shaw and Jason Colgate on
their success at district singles,
doubles and team darts in Lucknow
on Saturday. Comrade Ron captures
the singles title and Comrades
Daisy, Tyler, Jason and Ryan
captured second in team
competition. The Comrades will
advance to provincial competition in
Thamesville in the spring. Great job
all!
The Sunday night dance had 60
people attending and enjoying the
music of the Tri -Country Band. We
welcomed Linda Bird to work the
door, Deb Cann the bar, and Jo -Ann,
Judy and Mabel Glanville in the
kitchen.
The Legion is going to benefit
from a venture by one of its
Comrades. Comrade Sandra Josling
Brown is going to be making
homemade soups for a cause. The 13
varieties of frozen soups will be
available through the Legion and
can be ordered at the Legion or by
calling Comrade Sandra. The
Legion will receive part of each sale
to go towards veteran's programs,
youth programs and the building
fund. There are broth soups, cream
soups and seasonal soups, gluten-
free and spicy varieties in 16- and
32 -ounce in x -free vacuum -sealed
bags. Call today if interested in
discussing options.
Comrade President Jamie
Mitchell attended the full spring
council meeting on Sunday
afternoon at Branch 109 in
Goderich. Comrade Jamie reports he
is learning new things every meeting
about the Legion.
working alongside adults, then
leading the way to change is a
valuable lesson. Already the Leos
have improved our community in
many ways. Any organization that
sees community above personal
interest is good learning ground in
seeing the diversity of an area more
clearly. It did my heart good to see
the Leo Club come to life again;
both Chris and Curt have good
memories of work accomplished as
Leos, relationships made with Lions
members and events remembered.
So keep up the good work; it's very
worthwhile learning through
experience.
We have arrived at the season of
Lent — beginning on Ash Wednesday,
which happened to be Valentine's
Day and over the days set out for
Lent, we will arrive at Easter Sunday
on April Fool's Day. Now think
about that with a smile for a bit.
Spring might be coming, when
you're peering out the back door to a
field full of fog, but then a snow
machine is part of the picture. Who
knows? We celebrated 50 years of
our beautiful red and white flag this
past week.
I hope you enjoyed Family
Day/Heritage Day with the long
weekend.
Bye now, Betty G.W.
