The Citizen, 2018-02-15, Page 18PAGE 18. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 15, 2018. Neighbours want Wingham Police says Vincent By Denny Scott The Citizen Policing in North Huron as a whole, as well as in its neighbouring municipalities, may be the next protection issue facing North Huron Council. Currently, council is in the midst of trying to determine whether the Wingham Police Service should continue to have its own police service or whether it should be handled by the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) like the rest of North Huron. A special council meeting has been set for Feb. 26 at 7 p.m. at the Town Hall Theatre in Wingham to allow council to receive more feedback. The decision to hold the meeting was made after the Wingham Police Association, not to be confused with the Wingham Police Service, sent a letter to council in support of disbanding the Wingham Police Service. The letter was one of dozens presented at council's Feb. 5 meeting, most of which spoke to a desire to keep Wingham Police Service in the town. Reeve Neil Vincent said the message he was getting from ratepayers is that Wingham ward ratepayers want to continue with the current service level. He said if North Huron switched to an OPP service and wanted to maintain the same level of service, it would require enhanced policing options from the OPP which would mean less or no savings over the Wingham Police Service. Councillor Bill Knott said he would prefer this issue be answered directly by Wingham ratepayers instead of being voted on by council, unfortunately, as Councillor Brock Vodden pointed out, that wasn't an option. "We have to vote," Vodden said. "The decision has to be made by council and, if we abstain, we're voting in the negative. We are obliged to make a decision on which way we're voting." Council members said they were under the impression that Wingham wanted to maintain its existing policing service, indicating that, when they do vote, they would follow that desire. Another issue that was brought up was whether the Wingham Police Service could be expanded to cover other parts of North Huron. Vodden said the issue had received very little attention thus far, but is something council should be aware of. After the meeting, Vodden said he didn't think expanding the service was worthwhile. However if there was a desire to investigate it from ratepayers, council needed to consider it. Vincent also said that, while expanding the Wingham Police Service in North Huron wasn't something he had heard much support for, he had discussions with neighbouring municipalities' council members who had expressed interest in purchasing police service. "I don't think I'm at liberty to mention which municipalities," he said, "but I know there [are] possibly four municipalities that would like to look at something other than the OPP. The Wingham ward has to be decided first, but there may be something in the future worth discussing later on." Vincent said that, with the OPP building a new station in Clinton, some municipal representatives have voiced concern about future police services. While Vincent and Vodden said expanding the service should be investigated, East Wawanosh representative Ray Hallahan said he didn't get the impression that was Business Directory PHARMASAVE„ COME IN AND VISIT YOUR NEIGHBOURHOOD PHARMASAVE BROWN'S PHARMASAVE 198 Josephine St., Wingham, Ont. 519-357-1629 Hours: Mon. - Fri. 9 - 6 Sat. 9 - 4 Rear Parking Available LIVE WELL WITH ►'t\'A 1 Easy Prescription • Transfer /PAUL COOK ELECTRIC Home, Farm & Commercial Wiring BELGRAVE • 519-357-1537 Bernard Enterprises Authorized dealer for Central Boiler Classic Outdoor Wood Furnaces, Edge Outdoor Wood Furnaces And Maxim Wood Pellet and Corn Burners Gasification units available Inquire about our new edges Carman Bernard 519-887-6405 RR #4 Brussels • centralboiler.com Free delivery in Wingham & surrounding area SHELVING &C RACKING Large instock selection of pallet r.1 ng, store shelving, display cases and n$ooe for Industrial, Residential, Farm & Ri&il www.lakesideshelving. lakesidemarket@gmail. m 33842 Market Rd., North of Goderich, off Hw Affordable CAR AND TRUCK RENTALS Large & Small Trucks fridge carts - piano dollys- moving blankets Complete Selection of Cars Our rates qualify for insurance replacement Passenger Vans full size or mini GODERICH TOYOTA 344 Huron Rd. 519-524-9381 \GODERICH 1-800-338-1134/ r I e &MACHINE SHOP LTD.
