WALTON

The time is flying by and now it is
only five weeks until spring! You
know spring is around the corner
because hockey teams are in
playoffs, some are even done. Many
ice -related sports will come to a
close at the Brussels, Morris and
Grey Community Centre shortly
after March 10, just four weeks
away, when the ice comes out.
Spring sports meetings are already
being organized. Time will fly, so
those with snowmobiles better get
out and enjoy the snow we have.
There were a lot of machines out on
Sunday on the trail, and on many
fields around houses, on the
weekend, even though there was
some rain, freezing rain and then
some mild temperatures. Many have
headed north to have a few good
days of sledding and report good
trail conditions.
The Cranbrook Dart Club had 19
players out to play on Wednesday
evening. A pair of ladies, Karen
Bowles and Annette Lewington, had
the lucky throws and captured five
games for the night. A couple of men
had the same luck with Murray
Houston and Rob Vanderveen also
winning five games. The high shots
of the night were by Rita Bowers
hitting 114 and Murray hitting 121.
Returning from a wonderful week
with her sister is Fannie Somers. She
went to Salmon Arm, British
Columbia to visit her sister Doris.
She was accompanied by her
grandson Zachary, who went skiing
for a few days with friends out there.
They spent time touring the area and
just having a good visit. Welcome
back to Fannie.
Heading west to Cochrane,
Alberta was Edith Pipe and
granddaughter Marissa Pipe. The
pair went out to visit with Justin Pipe
and wife Kaitlin and new baby Lily.
Edith reports it was wonderful to see
them, but it was cold. They were
glad to come back to Brussels.
The days are winding down for the
Dauphin's Country Store. The store
will be closing for good at the end of
the week. There are a couple of days
yet, so if you haven't been in to pick
up some bargains, head in before
closing on Friday. It is sad to see the
store close, but tough decisions have
to be made. The store opened in
August, 2007 and was a great
addition to the village of Walton.
Dauphin's Feed and Supply business
will remain active in the village, so
don't worry about having to go
elsewhere for your feed needs. They
will also still carry dog, cat, chicken
feed and other agriculture -related
products.
Returning from a four-day winter
camping trip is Neil McGavin and
brother in law, Terry Johnson, and
seven other friends from the London
and Guelph areas. The group of nine
went to Algonquin Park and had a
ball. They stayed in cabins, but spent
much of the day in the great
outdoors. They went ice fishing and
cross-country skiing. They went
snow -shoeing and travelled between
three and nine kilometres each day.
They enjoyed all their own meals
and had a wonderful time together.
Welcome back Neil and Terry.
We offer our condolences to the
family of Bill Eckmier on his
passing. Bill spent most of his life in
Ethel and was generous of his time
and talent for gardening. He worked
at many things during his life
including with hydro, carpentry,
working in a gravel pit and as a
handy man for many in the area. He
didn't drive until into his 50s, but
always managed to get where he
needed to be on time.
He loved his garden and provided
his family and friends with fresh
produce, especially potatoes, during
the year. The community dinners
often received donations as well.
Bill had spent the last few months
at Huronlea Home for the Aged in
Brussels and will be missed by his
family, neighbours and friends. Our
sympathies to all.
How time flies. It is hard to
believe that Jeff John Gordon
McGavin is 50 years old. A belated
(his birthday is Jan. 14) surprise
party was arranged for him at Blyth
Cowbell Brewing Company on
Saturday evening with about 100 in
attendance. Friends from his
childhood, high school, the
University of Guelph and family
celebrated the milestone with Jeff.
He was really surprised when his
children Jacob, who is in Toronto,
and MacKenzie, who is in FX
University in Nova Scotia, both
arrived for the party! The group

enjoyed a night of fun, dancing and
socializing! Happy 50th Jeff!
Our home was full on Sunday
following the baptism of our
granddaughter Elaina. Elaina is the
daughter of Kelly and Adam Jarosz
and was baptized at Brussels United
Church. Following the service,
members of both the McDonald and
Jarosz families gathered at our home
for dinner. There were 20 gathered
around the tables for lunch.
Our sympathies are extended to
Gayle and Brad Speiran on the
passing of her brother Lee Rintoul.
He will be missed by his wife Lila
and children Carol, Kim and Deb
and their families. I only met Lee a
few times over the course of getting
the RV welcome bags ready for the
IPM. Lee and his wife Lila were a
great help and he was always soft
spoken and pleasant in all our
meetings. Our condolences to all.
Neil and Marie McGavin were
hosts for a small intimate dinner for
the groom and bride. It was a
grandma and grandpa's night to visit
with the engaged couple, Brent
Melady and Shauna Regier. They
also had grandmother Catharine
Melady and Pat and Cathy Melady
attend. It was a lovely evening for
the couple to just catch everyone up
on their wedding plans!
Time really flies and a couple of
weeks can pass in a hurry. John and
Karen Braecker had a good two
weeks in Florida at Cape Coral. It
wasn't too hot but there was no snow
and the sun shone everyday. They
had each of their daughters, Holly
and Allison, join them for a different
week, so a chance to hang alone with
each of the girls was nice. They just
spent the time lazing around with no
special places to go. Welcome back!
Celebrating birthdays this past
week included Annette Lewington,
Mathew Coleman, Ken Shortreed,
Sydney Warwick, Mike Alexander,
