Dauphin's General Store in Walton slated for closure

WALTON

It was quite a shock for the village
of Walton on Friday morning, when
the news hit the billboard at
Dauphin's General Store about its
upcoming closure. The store was an
asset for the village, a handy store to
slip to for that missing item when
cooking. It had great meats, good
coffee and always a friendly face to
chat with. Of course, the new
minimum wage increase and soaring
hydro prices haven't helped, but a
tough decision to close was
made. The store will close in
February.
Another business in Walton is not
closing. The rumour mill had
McGavin's closing but Brian and
Jeff have put that rumour to rest with
advertisements on CKNX and the
sign outside of McGavin's says it is
a family-owned business and still is!
Great to hear!
Returning from a week-long
holiday to the west are Ken and
Meaghan McCallum. They went to
Calgary and to Banff and Lake
Louise to enjoy some snowboarding
and a holiday. Enjoying a great visit
with grandma Nancy and grandpa
Greg O'Reilly for the week were
Linkin, Corbin and Sloane.
Welcome back!
A family vacation to Florida was
what Geoff and Michelle Dalton
family enjoyed for the past two
weeks. The family drove there and
had a house to live in for the two
weeks and they had a great two
weeks. When Brady was asked what
was the best part, he said Disney
World. They went to three sections
and he thought Magic Kingdom was
best, but enjoyed the others as well.
Emma thought the pool and hot tub
were great. Brandon thought going
to a Tampa Bay Lightning game was
awesome and Hannah enjoyed the
Animal Kingdom the best. They also
went to the Epcot Centre. A long
drive, they report, but it's good to be
home. They now have homework to
catch up on, but it's great to see their
friends again!
The Craig family has returned
from a vacation to Vancouver for a
week. Graeme, Helen and Shannon
went out to enjoy the Canadian
Figure Skating Championships.
They had a great time with Helen's
sister Mary and they saw some
fantastic skating performances. They
returned home to Toronto to catch a
flight to London. Problems arose
and they made it to London, but
wait, where's the luggage? It did not
make the trip from Toronto, but
arrived a couple of days later at their
home.
Our sympathies are extended to
the Thomas and van Vliet families
on the passing of Joan van Vliet.
Joan will be missed by her children
Shelley, Duane, John, Debbie, Janis
and Joyann and their families Joan
was born and raised in the Brussels
area and after working and living in
Listowel, and then the Walton area,
she spent her later years again in
Listowel. She was a lovely lady, who
loved to smile and enjoyed her many
trips back to the Brussels area to
attend special events. Our
condolences to all.
Our sympathies are extended to
the Steffler family on the passing of
Jim Steffler. He will be missed by
his wife Verna and children Verne,
Brian and Jason and their families.
He will also be missed by his
siblings Anne, Clem and Joe. Jim
was raised on Cranbrook Road and
had many friends in the Cranbrook
and Brussels areas. A good man and
a well respected teacher for many
years, he will be missed by many.
Our condolences to all.
A beautiful new plowing match
sign is now up at the intersection of
Country Roads 12 and 25 in Walton.
"Thanks for the Memories" is now
greeting all at the stop to remind us
all of how the small little centre of
Walton was host to over 76,000
people and showcased how amazing
Huron County is.
Recovering from cataract surgery
is Neil McGavin. He will be out and
about as good as new soon.
Our sympathies are extended to
Glenn Bridge and family on the
passing of his brother Ben. They
held a memorial service in
Petrolia on Saturday which many
family members from the area
attended.
The Cranbrook Dart league met on
Jan. 17 and had 20 players out to
play. Team 2 swept the competition
winning all six games. Team
members were Evelyn Blake,
Murray Keffer and Fred Smith. The
high shots of the night were by Teuni
Smith hitting 114 for the ladies and
Murray Keffer hitting 137 for the
men. Honourable mention goes to
Rob VanVeen for hitting 133.

Addiction group briefs county on activities
With mental health and addiction
being at the forefront of many minds
in Huron County in recent months,
last week representatives of the

with opiates, 108 family members

housing support, community
withdrawal management,
transitional case management and
peer support throughout Huron and
Perth Counties through a number of
