County to support
M -T tenanted fight
The Huron County Museum and
Historic Gaol, in compliance with
the county's deaccession policy,
deaccessioned five items from its
inventory and arranged for their
distribution.
In a report prepared by Senior
Curator Elizabeth French -Gibson,
she said that the museum didn't need
the items any longer.
The first two items were an
iron axe head and lid/pot donated
by Bruce Fleming. The axe head
had been used in trade with
Indigenous peoples by French fur
traders in the early 18th century
and was dug up on Little Squaw
Island in Bruce County. The
Fleming family had purchased the
island in 1909.
The item was transferred to the
Bruce County Museum.
The second item was a photograph
of men in the workplace wearing
hats and aprons.
The photograph was originally
identified as a picture of the Huron
Pottery factory in Egmondville and
it was transferred to Huron from the
Bruce County Museum. In fact,
however, research indicates that the
photograph is of the moulding room
of the Brantford Stoneware
Manufacturing Company in 1905.
The item was transferred to the
Brant County Museum.
There were then several labels
used on the end of salt barrels and
assorted envelopes, which will be
offered to other public museums or
sold at public sale with proceeds
going to a Collections Acquisitions
Fund.
Huron County has thrown its
support behind Morris-Turnberry in
its quest to learn more about changes
being made to assessment
classifications on tenanted farm
class properties. The support will
be used for consulting and
professional fees up to a maximum
of $5,000.
"In consultation with Morris-
Turnberry staff, the Municipal
Property Assessment Corporation
(MPAC) has been recently changing
the assessment classifications on
tenanted farm class properties.
Non -tillable acreage that is being
rented out to tenants is now being
classified as residential and thus not
benefitting from the 25 per cent farm
tax ratio. It is believed that this
approach by MPAC is not consistent
with legislative authority," reads the
county's report. "As this issue will
impact the county as a whole and
impacts overall county taxation, it is
important that the county supports
the Municipality of Morris-
Turnberry in its delegation request at
[the Rural Ontario Municipal
Association's annual meeting] in
January, 2018. As such, the county
has general consultancy dollars
available to support Morris-
Turnberry's work with its tax
consultant, MTE."
Morris-Turnberry Mayor Paul
Gowing said the issue is a major one
within Huron County. Within
Morris-Turnberry alone, he said, it
affects 185 properties, meaning it is
likely a county -wide issue with
farmland.
