Merner prepares for Kenya Me to We Mission trip
A big trip
Londesborough native Lexi Merner is heading to Kenya in
May on a mission trip focusing on empowering women in
the country. The trip is through the Me to We organization
and she is fundraising to cover the costs of the event
through local Lions Clubs and a fundraising website. (Photo

The Citizen
Londesborough native Lexi
Merner will be tackling a completely
new adventure later this year when
she heads on a mission trip to Kenya.
Merner, who is studying law at the
University of Guelph, will be
travelling to rural Kenya May 4-24.
The trip is organized through the Me
to We charity organization, and
while there she will doubtlessly have
all-new experiences, the trip itself
will be completely unique as she
tackles it alone.
"I have never gone on a trip by
myself," she said. "Usually my
whole family comes so this will be
definitely different"
Merner said she is an independent
person and wanted to tackle
something like this and, after
hearing from a friend about her trip,
she decided to go to Kenya.
"A friend of mine, Crystal Ratelle
from Grand Bend, has gone on a few
mission trips with Me to We so I
thought I would check it out and I
found one I like," she said. "Crystal
had originally gone on a mission trip
to India and said she loved working
with the people in the community.
She spoke highly of it and had
beautiful pictures."
Inspired to make her own mark on
the world, Lerner chose Kenya as a
location, explaining that the trip is
about empowering women.
"There are different missions for
each of the trips," she said. "Some
focus on building, like creating
schools or digging wells, but this is
focused on empowering the women
there by spending time with them
and helping them with their day-to-
day work.
"I think, as a girl, it's pretty
important that other women around
the world are encouraged like we are
here," she said. "They don't have the
same opportunities, but it is nice to
help them with what they do have."
Merner truly will be facing this
experience alone, saying she doesn't
know anyone else who's taking the
trip. Between 25 and 35 others, will
be working together once they arrive
in Kenya.
Currently, Merner is fundraising
for the trip right now and, locally,

PEOPLE AROUND
LONDESBORO

Any time someone takes a chance
on having a new procedure to
improve their health and well being,
there is a certain amount of
trepidation regarding the outcome.
Certainly it is ever more unsettling
in older persons. I have been asked
just how things have worked out for
Milt Dale and his cochlear implant.
Mind you, Milt was eager to have
the implant and has been studious
about dealing with it. To say how it
has worked out is obvious in his
comment to me the other day. He
remarked that when he walks the
dog he can hear birds all over the
village. What a treat that must be for
him.
A success story of another sort is
the Hullett Central Public School's
recent ticket sales for meat draws.
The tickets were sold out very
quickly perhaps because of the
uniqueness of the raffle. All the
prizes were donated and every day
during January a draw has been
made. Organizers were hoping to
realize between $3,000 and $5,000.
In reality, according to Sarah
Bolinger, who delivered my winning
bag of chicken, they made well in
excess of $10,000.
Thanks to all who showed their
support of our school by purchasing
a ticket. Our students will benefit
from your generosity.
Members of the community are
invited to a lasagna supper and
movie this Saturday evening. The
Londesborough United Church is
showing the movie "All Saints" on
Jan. 27. Supper will be served at
6 p.m. followed by John Corbett's
inspiring story of Michael Spurlock.
Pastor Michael was ordered to
shut down a tiny church. Working
with a group of refugees, a
promising future has been the result.

UCW discusses new challenges
To begin the time of
devotion/program at the Jan. 15
gathering of the Londesborough
UCW, Harriett Shillinglaw lit the
Christ candle to remind the ladies
that God was with them that
evening. Then she lit a second
candle from the Christ candle to
remind everyone that they are called
to carry God's light into the world.
Brenda Radford read the scripture
passage, Matt 2: 1-12, the story of
the visit by the Wise Men to the
Holy family. Laura Scott offered a
reflection on these verses noting that
the Wise Men were probably
anxious to get back to their homes
by the way they had come. But,
without questioning God's
command, they found another way.
Harriett noted that we are not nearly
as compliant, most often resisting
any change in favour of the
comfortable ways, never considering
a new path. But a new year is the
prime time for making changes,
often called resolutions.
There followed an open discussion
about resolutions, their importance,
who they might affect, how our own
lives would be changed, etc. Laura
encouraged everyone to find God's
message to us. Harriett suggested
each of the ladies try to make at least
one small change in our lives as we
enter a new year, even something as
simple as a small act of kindness
every day. Brenda reminded
everyone that God has blessed us
with abundance and we should
resolve to try new paths in caring
for others in His world.
New president, Bev Riley,
conducted the business portion of
the meeting. Lena Nesbitt presented
her comprehensive treasurer's report
for 2017. The next meeting will be
Feb. 19.

RETAIL BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY
For an agency store in BLYTH
LCBO RFP #2018-205 BLYTH
An excellent business opportunity is now available to established retailers in Blyth.
The Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO) is seeking a responsible,
customer -focused retailer to operate an LCBO Agency Store in Blyth.
To qualify, the applicant must have an existing, currently operating retail
business in the community and commit to operating the Agency store within
established LCBO guidelines. To facilitate the sale of beverage alcohol
products, the operator may be required to enter into separate commercial
arrangements with the LCBO and domestic beer suppliers. The successful
applicant will also be required to participate in a special LCBO server -training
program to ensure the responsible sale of beverage alcohol products.
Since 1962, the LCBO has authorized more than 200 Agency stores to serve
communities that have requested service but where the local population is
too small to support a regular LCBO or beer store. These Agency stores are
operated by local retailers within their existing retail business. Agency store
contracts are normally awarded for a five-year term. In communities where
there is currently an Agency store, as the contract nears expiry, the LCBO will
take into consideration the fact that new businesses in the community may
have been established and will allow an opportunity for all businesses in the
community to compete for the next five-year term.
Operating an LCBO Agency Store provides a retailer with an excellent
opportunity to increase revenue and attract customers while providing local
residents with beverage alcohol services. Agency stores also deliver economic
benefits to the community in many cases through job creation and increased
customer traffic for local merchants.
For this competition, the LCBO must receive requests for the application
package from interested businesses by mail before end of business day
Friday, February 2, 2018. The application requests must quote the
following information:
