On the third Sunday of Epiphany
Gord and Nancy Folkard greeted
worshippers and handed out the
bulletins at Knox United Church,
Belgrave.
Brian Hymers welcomed the
congregation and lit the Christ
candle. The welcoming hymn was,
"This Day God Gives Me." The call
to worship was read responsively
and then each shared in the Peace of
Christ.
After the choir sang, the
congregation sang "Jesus Christ Is
Waiting". The scripture lessons were
taken from Jonah 1: 1-3, 3: 1-5 and
3: 10 and Mark 1: 14-21. After the
hymn of response, "Breathe on Me,
Breath of God" was sung, Nancy
Jardin reported on the Minute for
Missions. The offering was taken up
and dedicated.
The closing hymn, "This is God's
Wondrous World" was sung and the

Currie thinks wage increase a tax grab
THE EDITOR,
"Minimum wage increase affects
approximately 30 per cent of
workers." These are the
government's words.
Question: Did the government
raise minimum wage at this time to:
• Help lower -paid people?
• Get elected in upcoming
election?
• Or is it a plain tax grab?
Facts: The additional costs will be
more than the minimum wage
increase. There will be costs and
compensation which are a
percentage of wages. These costs
will be passed on to the general
population through increases in all
retail and service costs affected by
minimum wage increase.
Additional income tax paid per
person receiving wage increase
based on 40 hours per week will be
over $300 per year to the provincial
government and over $700 per year
to the federal government, plus any
costs which have HST added to
them.
This looks like a tax grab to me.

Writer urges NIl to review costs
THE EDITOR,
After reading Denny Scott's
coverage of the North Huron budget
proceedings in The Citizen, Jan. 11,
I have to ask two questions: who is
in charge of spending the tax dollars
of the Municipality of North Huron
and who decides what expenditures
are necessary?
It has always been my belief that
we elect a reeve and council to act
on behalf of the electorate to manage
the day-to-day business of the
municipality; to ensure that tax
dollars are spent wisely and to direct
and supervise municipal employees
to carry out the decisions of the
council.
After reading the summary of
events at the budget meeting, at
which a draft budget was presented
with a whopping 14.7 per cent
increase to taxation, it appears to me
that the direction of authority (or
chain of command) has reversed and
that the department heads, who are
well-paid with our tax dollars, are
now giving council direction as to
how tax dollars need to be spent and
where to spend them.
With increased downloading of
programs by the provincial
government and more of our local
tax dollars directed to support local
programs, it is essential that rural
councils take a good look at what is
necessary and what isn't.
It's a sad state of affairs when
being a property owner in the
Municipality of North Huron or
anywhere in the Province of Ontario
becomes more of a financial liability
than an asset because of the taxation
burden we must carry.
In conclusion, I respectfully ask
the members of North Huron
Council to remember who elected
them and to review their obligations
to the electorate. Do not be
intimidated by the wish lists of
municipal employees; instead keep a
keen eye focused on the
expenditures that are necessary to
run the municipality like any other
financially -efficient business. Stand
up at meetings and vocalize your
common-sense opinions and ideas to
ensure a fair and financially
responsible management of our tax
dollars.
Vaughn Toll,
East Wawanosh Ward.

amount.
Both these basic personal amounts
are not enough to survive on. Both
should be increased by $1,500 for
the next four years so you get to a
more realistic living amount for the
individual person.
The government of the day would
have to raise the income tax rate to
make up the lost revenue. This
would be more realistic than a tax
grab and election ploy.
Thank you,
Barry Currie.
