Londesborough UC Board to meet Jan. 23 PEOPLE AROUND LONDESBORO By BRENDA RADFORD Call 523-4296 The order of service at Londesborough United Church on Sunday, Jan. 14 included "A Minute for Mission" about "Displaced People". The item noted that the Mission and Service Fund of the United Church of Canada is addressing the needs of displaced people around the world and here in Canada in many ways by providing resources for housing, shelter, medical assistance and education as well as emotional support. In 2014, there were 19.5 million refugees worldwide and 38.2 million displaced people throughout the year. Natural disasters in 2015 increased these numbers. Rev. Terry Fletcher's message that morning was titled "A Displaced Family". He remarked that by the current meaning of refugees today, the Holy Family were refugees as they left their homeland and sought refuge in Egypt. "Fuge" of the word refugee is Latin for "one who flees". The sweetness of the Christmas story became a tale of danger and intrigue. Warned by the Wise Men of the intentions of Herod, the family made the long and arduous trek to Egypt for their own safety. When looked at closely, it becomes apparent that their story rivals a modern day thriller. The family was fleeing a terrible adversary in Herod who had spies and was known to murder members of his own family and any who opposed his rule. The small family would have experienced the same emotions and circumstances as today's refugees, fearing for their safety and relying on the generosity of others along their journey. It is estimated that in their month long journey they would have trekked 600 kilometres. They must have felt concern about how they would be received by their family and friends in Nazareth when they were told it was safe to return to their own country to resume their lives. Rev. Fletcher also noted that during the three years of His ministry, Jesus could also be considered a refugee for He had no possessions, no home of His own and relied on His believers as He wandered the area preaching. He must have had moments of concern and turmoil as He headed to His final destination. During His lifetime, Jesus experienced all the same things as we do; therefore through His divinity He can help us. Terry gave congregants a new way of looking at Christ's life. His supporting scripture was Matt. 2: 13 - 23. In his writings, Matthew was wanting to build the early Christian church and three times in these verses he noted that the Lord's promises from the Old Testament had come true. The responsive psalm was Psalm 27. The official board will meet on Jan. 23 and a number of important items are on the agenda for that meeting. Members, please plan to attend. All Canadians are eligible to receive a $25 gift card from Loblaws following the bread price-fixing issue. The Outreach Committee would like to encourage all members to apply for that gift card and donate it to the local food bank. The committee will help with your application for the card.
