(Shawn Loughlin photo) Walton's Matt Shortreed ended his three years as president of the Huron County Beef Producers last week, making way for Elliott Miller of the Lucknow area. Shortreed served for three years at the helm of the organization, one more than the traditional two-year term. He stayed on for an extra year to help guide the Beef Producers through one of their busiest years, when they'd be taking part in the Huron County Federation of Agriculture (HCFA) food booth at the International Plowing Match (IPM) in his hometown of Walton. "We finally made it through the At the Branch year we thought would never end," Shortreed told his fellow producers at the organization's annual meeting on Jan. 10 at the Brussels Legion. In addition to the all of the organization's events, like the spring barbecue and dance, the summer barbecue, serving food at the annual Hullett Central Public School get- together and the Elementary School Fair in Belgrave and then all of the work at the IPM, the industry also had its own challenges due to the elements thrown at them by Mother Nature. A wet spring and a cool summer challenged beef producers 'Kick up your plaid' set By Jo -Ann McDonald It was a quiet week around the Brussels Legion Branch. The Cadets held their meeting on Tuesday evening, as usual, and set the room up for the banquet the next day. The Huron County Beef Producers held their annual meeting on Wednesday evening. The night began with a meal prepared by the Legion. They fed 65 people a roast beef dinner and the meeting followed. Comrades working for the Branch included Sandra Josling Brown, Barrie Currie, Deb Ross, Mabel Glanville, John Lowe, Judy Lee, Jo- Ann McDonald and two students earning volunteer hours, Amanda and Justin Morrison. The Thursday night darts had 13 darters taking aim at the boards. Winners were: first, Sharon Robbins and Sandra Josling Brown; second, John Stadelmann, Marlene Rutledge and Catrina Josling; high, Wayne Smith, 119 and Betty Ann, 113. Prizes for the best plaid look! Food will be available from 6-9 p.m. and the music runs 8-10 p.m. with karaoke. throughout the province, he said, but the unseasonably warm fall helped to level things out at the 1 lth hour. The group got through the tough year, Shortreed said, and it really showed all they can accomplish when they pull their efforts together. Shortreed said that while he's stepping away from the president's role, he will remain an active member of the organization as a director and serving in any capacity that's needed of him. *** Elliott Miller is the new president of the Huron County Beef Producers. That's our reality and how we deal with it says a lot. January is one of those times that is not flexible. Another year has begun, the Christmas things have been tucked away, the new pictures reviewed and the leftovers are history. So, on we go with life, no matter the weather. Plans, written or thought are part of the last few days of a year and the first bit of the new one. What will we do? What needs to be done? What can I do better What can we edit? Oh yes, the thoughts are whirling. So here we go with a brand new year in all its reality ready to shape our world with all the enthusiasm that we can muster. It was Citizen of the Year presentation time for Elaine Armstrong last week as she received her plaque from The Citizen folk. This honour comes from our community paper as a way for the community to say thanks This year Elaine Armstrong was so named for the many nice things that one does. Soup & More 2 comes to mind first, where many of our people have enjoyed a free meal on Friday for several years thanks to her nutritional background. Kid's Corner is another spot where Elaine gives time and energy. The Presbyterian folk are ever grateful for the many things that Elaine does so very well for their congregation. So well done and congratulations Elaine, we appreciate your gifts and thank you for sharing them with us. For many, the job for this month is getting annual reports in order. Time to think about the year past and smile or grimace when notes, reports or thoughts surface. This is the time to think of all the possibilities for the organization and make plans for the future. Let the dreamers dream and if all is well, reality will catch up, then the details will be embraced. There are lots of "bugs" about, so feel free to stay at home and keep yours to yourself. Indoor crowds are a great way to share all the nasties as we breath the same air, touch the same surfaces and mingle with many. So keep well, get well and you know the rest: get your sleep, eat your vegetables and wash your hands well and often. Put on your happy face and enjoy the winter wonderland. You might as well, it's here for a bit. Bye now, Betty G.W.
