Morris-Turnberry Council
received some bad news in response
to an application made by Union
Gas to provide funding to extend
service to Walton last year.
The municipality had partnered
with the utility provider to try and
have natural gas lines extended to
Walton, servicing the village as well
as farmers along the line which
County immigration group continues work
By Shawn Loughlin
The Citizen
Work is continuing with the Local
Immigration Partnership (LIP) at the
Huron County level, but funded by
Citizenship and Immigration
Canada.
Kristin Crane, the county's
immigration liaison, presented an
update to Huron County Council on
the program at its final committee of
the whole meeting of 2017.
After years of having funding
approved on a year -by -year basis, in
2017, the contract was approved for
2017-2020. The budget covers a
number of aspects of the
partnership.
Wages are covered by the funding
for a project manager (28 hours per
week) and senior management (six
hours per month).
The funding also covers travel for
one or two conferences per year and
any other travel costs related to the
partnership. Partnership Council
meetings and costs associated with
focus groups are all also covered by
the funding, as are training
opportunities, community
awareness and employer meetings,
publicity and any translation needs
which provide vital services to new
immigrants that will help facilitate
the settlement process.
In addition, consultants will be
engaged to provide both digital and
print media, researching housing
gaps in the county, developing a
survey tool for communities to
determine how welcoming they are
to newcomers, the creation of
website resources and a public
awareness campaign directed at
community members on the value
and contribution of newcomers.
The Huron County Immigration
Action Plan for 2017-2020 has been
organized into seven action -focused
objectives: Quantifying the demand
for workers, targeting the sources of
new immigrants, building up the
immigration support ecosystem,
strengthening the role of the Huron
County Local Immigration
Partnership, being engaging to the
public, providing regional
leadership and clarifying the role of
the county government.
The county and its representatives
are working to support program
delivery through: Collecting and
reporting on newcomer service
delivery, monitoring service delivery
to newcomers in the community,
recommending improvements to
program and service delivery,
conducting research and program
assessments, planning and
conducting needs assessments,
working with other service
providers and funders, building or
enhancing the capacity of service
providers to deliver services to
newcomers and asking that the

and solution, increasing
understanding of different cultures
and promoting tolerant attitudes and
preparing for an influx of new
residents.
• Attract newcomers by increasing
their exposure to Huron County,
including awareness about what we
have to offer and making personal
connections with them.
• Support employers in their hiring
process through collaboration and
dialogue, as well as offering tool kits
and knowledge to help them become
human resource leaders in their
industries.
• Develop measures to ensure the
settlement process is as easy as
possible, particularly for recent
immigrants and refugees.
• Retain or repatriate as many
residents as possible by making
newcomers feel welcome,
integrating them into the social
fabric of the community and
understand where we can improve
as a community to retain
those with different cultural
backgrounds."

In a letter from Union Gas that
Morris-Turnberry Council discussed
at during its Dec. 19 meeting, it was
revealed the project did not receive
funding through the Ministry of
Infrastructure.
After some debate around design
and colour at a previous meeting,
Morris-Turnberry approved placing
burgundy signs at cemeteries in the
municipality.
Each sign will identify the
cemetery and have a "storybook" on
the back providing information on
the site and the date of the first
